Magnetization Process of Single Molecule Magnets at Low Temperatures
We show that correlations established before quenching to very low
temperatures, later drive the magnetization process of systems of single
molecule magnets, after a magnetic field is applied at t=0. We also show that
in SC lattices, m \propto sqrt(t), as observed in Fe_8, but only for
1+2*log_10(h_d/h_w) time decades, where h_d is a nearest neighbor dipolar
magnetic field and a spin reversal can occur only if the field on it is within
(-h_w,h_w). However, the sqrt(t) behavior is not universal. For BCC and FCC
lattices, m \propto t^p, but p \simeq 0.7. The value to which m finally levels
off is also given.Comment: 5 LaTeX pages, 2 figures. Submitted to Phys. Rev. Lett. on 26 January

Time relaxation of interacting single--molecule magnets
We study the relaxation of interacting single--molecule magnets (SMMs) in
both spatially ordered and disordered systems. The tunneling window is assumed
to be, as in Fe8, much narrower than the dipolar field spread. We show that
relaxation in disordered systems differs qualitatively from relaxation in fully
occupied cubic and Fe_8 lattices. We also study how line shapes that develop in
''hole--digging'' experiments evolve with time t in these fully occupied
lattices. We show (1) that the dipolar field h scales as t^p in these hole line
shapes and show (2) how p varies with lattice structure. Line shapes are not,
in general, Lorentzian. More specifically, in the lower portion of the hole,
they behave as (h/t^p)^{(1/p)-1} if h is outside the tunnel window. This is in
agreement with experiment and with our own Monte Carlo results.Comment: 21 LaTeX pages, 6 eps figures. Submitted to PRB on 15 June 2005.

Phases of anisotropic dipolar antiferromagnets
We study systems of classical magnetic dipoles on simple cubic lattices with
dipolar and antiferromagnetic exchange interactions. By analysis and Monte
Carlo (MC) simulations, we find how the antiferromagnetic phases vary with
uniaxial and fourfold anisotropy constants, C and D, as well as with exchange
strength J. We pay special attention to the spin reorientation (SR) phase, and
exhibit in detail the nature of its broken symmetries. By mean field theory and
by MC, we also obtain the ratio of the higher ordering temperature to the SR
transition temperature, and show that it depends mainly on D/C, and rather
weakly on J. We find a reverse SR transition.Comment: 10 LaTeX pages, 14 eps figures. Submitted to PRB on 03 October 2005.

Tension in secretory granule membranes causes extensive membrane transfer through the exocytotic fusion pore
or fusion to occur the repulsive forces between two interacting phospholipid bilayers must be reduced. In model systems, this can be achieved by increasing the surface tension of at least one of the membranes. However, there has so far been no evidence that the secretory granule membrane is under tension. We have been studying exocytosis by using the patch-clamp technique to measure the surface area of the plasma membrane of degranulating mast cells. When a secretory granule fuses with the plasma membrane there is a step increase in the cell surface area. Some fusion events are reversible, in which case we have found that the backstep is larger than the initial step, indicating that there is a net decrease in the area of the plasma membrane. The decrease has the following properties: (i) the magnitude is strongly dependent on the lifetime of the fusion event and can be extensive, representing as much as 40% of the initial granule surface area; (ii) the rate of decrease is independent of granule size; and (iii) the decrease is not dependent on swelling of the secretory granule matrix. We conclude that the granule membrane is under tension and that this tension causes a net transfer of membrane from the plasma membrane to the secretory granule, while they are connected by the fusion pore. The high membrane tension in the secretory granule may be the critical stress necessary for bringing about exocytotic fusion.National Institutes of Health GM-3885
The pine shoot beetle Tomicus piniperda as a plausible vector of Fusarium circinatum in northern Spain
International audienceAbstractKey messageThe pine shoot beetle, Tomicus piniperda, is a potential vector of the pitch canker disease pathogen. The insect could transmit the pathogenic fungus during its maturation or regeneration feeding on the shoots of healthy pine crowns.ContextFusarium circinatum, the causal agent of pitch canker disease, currently affects Pinus radiata in northern Spain, causing pitch-soaked cankers and tree death. Although several species of the family Scolytinae have been reported as vectors of this pathogen, the role of the pine shoot beetle T. piniperda remains unclear.AimsThe general objective of this study was to determine whether T. piniperda is a vector for the pitch canker pathogen F. circinatum. For this purpose, Leach’s postulates (1) an association between T. piniperda and trees affected by pitch canker disease; (2) regular visits by T. piniperda to healthy P. radiata trees; (3) presence of the pathogen on the insect in nature; and (4) transmission of the pathogen to disease-free host material under controlled conditions.MethodsFresh green shoots with feeding galleries were collected from the ground, breeding galleries were collected from diseased trunks and insects were collected during their dispersion flights. A laboratory experiment was conducted in which specimens of T. piniperda were inoculated with the pathogen prior to feeding on shoots.ResultsIn the field, T. piniperda was found to be associated with both diseased and healthy P. radiata trees, and F. circinatum was found to be present, at low rates, on the exoskeleton of T. piniperda. In the laboratory experiment, evidence of the ability of T. piniperda to transfer the pathogen to healthy shoots was found.ConclusionsThe study findings indicate T. piniperda as a plausible vector of this pathogen. We postulate for the first time a potential relationship between the life cycles of T. piniperda and F. circinatum

Ergotropy and entanglement in critical spin chains
A subsystem of an entangled ground state is in a mixed state. Thus, if we
isolate this subsystem from its surroundings we may be able to extract work
applying unitary transformations, up to a maximal amount which is called
ergotropy. Once this work has been extracted, the subsystem will still contain
some bound energy above its local ground state, which can provide valuable
information about the entanglement structure. We show that the bound energy for
half a free fermionic chain decays as the square of the entanglement entropy
divided by the chain length, thus approaching zero for large system sizes, and
we conjecture that this relation holds for all 1D critical states
