An Economic Analysis of Fully Funded Pension Program
This paper uses an overlapping generation model to examine how individual choices and welfare are affected with the implementation of a fully funded pension plan. First, I consider the case when the pension is not available and sets this result as a benchmark. I then examine how a uniform pension benefit financed with a flat income tax affects individual behaviour across households that differ in their skill and their preference for leisure. The computational results show that the pension program leads to a distortion in labour supply and generally reduces the level of welfare for all types of individuals
Coalitions and Cliques in the School Choice Problem
The school choice mechanism design problem focuses on assignment mechanisms
matching students to public schools in a given school district. The well-known
Gale Shapley Student Optimal Stable Matching Mechanism (SOSM) is the most
efficient stable mechanism proposed so far as a solution to this problem.
However its inefficiency is well-documented, and recently the Efficiency
Adjusted Deferred Acceptance Mechanism (EADAM) was proposed as a remedy for
this weakness. In this note we describe two related adjustments to SOSM with
the intention to address the same inefficiency issue. In one we create possibly
artificial coalitions among students where some students modify their
preference profiles in order to improve the outcome for some other students.
Our second approach involves trading cliques among students where those
involved improve their assignments by waiving some of their priorities. The
coalition method yields the EADAM outcome among other Pareto dominations of the
SOSM outcome, while the clique method yields all possible Pareto optimal Pareto
dominations of SOSM. The clique method furthermore incorporates a natural
solution to the problem of breaking possible ties within preference and
priority profiles. We discuss the practical implications and limitations of our
approach in the final section of the article
Hierarchical Kohonenen Net for Anomaly Detection in Network Security
A novel multilevel hierarchicalKohonen Net (K-Map) for an intrusion detection system is presented. Each level of the hierarchical map is modeled as a simple winner-take-all K-Map. One significant advantage of this multilevel hierarchical K-Map is its computational efficiency. Unlike other statistical anomaly detection methods such as nearest neighbor approach, K-means clustering or probabilistic analysis that employ distance computation in the feature space to identify the outliers, our approach does not involve costly point-to-point computation in organizing the data into clusters. Another advantage is the reduced network size. We use the classification capability of the K-Map on selected dimensions of data set in detecting anomalies. Randomly selected subsets that contain both attacks and normal records from the KDD Cup 1999 benchmark data are used to train the hierarchical net. We use a confidence measure to label the clusters. Then we use the test set from the same KDD Cup 1999 benchmark to test the hierarchical net. We show that a hierarchical K-Map in which each layer operates on a small subset of the feature space is superior to a single-layer K-Map operating on the whole feature space in detecting a variety of attacks in terms of detection rate as well as false positive rate
Music from the Harpsichord House
Music from the Harpsichord House is an installation and series of concerts that exists in the binary of in and out of performance. During a concert, the harpsichordist is hidden inside the house and his face is live-projected outside. Fifteen new musical compositions were commissioned for the harpsichord house
Analysis of Gal4-directed transcription activation using Tra1 mutants selectively defective for interaction with Gal4
Promoter-specific transcriptional activators (activators) stimulate transcription through direct interactions with one or more components of the transcription machinery, termed the target. The identification of direct in vivo targets of activators has been a major challenge. Previous studies have provided evidence that the Tra1 subunit of the yeast SAGA (Spt-Ada-Gcn5-acetyltransferase) complex is the target of the yeast activator Gal4. However, several other general transcription factors, in particular the mediator complex, have also been implicated as Gal4 targets. Here we perform a large-scale genetic screen to derive and characterize tra1 alleles that are selectively defective for interaction with Gal4 in vivo [Gal4 interaction defective (GID) mutants]. In contrast to WT Tra1, Tra1 GID mutants are not recruited by Gal4 to the promoter and cannot support Gal4-directed transcription, demonstrating the essentiality of the Gal4-Tra1 interaction. In yeast strains expressing a Tra1 GID mutant, binding of Gal4 to the promoter is unexpectedly also diminished, indicating that Gal4 and Tra1 bind cooperatively. Consistent with cooperative binding, we demonstrate that the Gal4-Tra1 interaction occurs predominantly on the promoter and not off DNA. Finally, we show that although Tra1 is targeted by other activators, these interactions are unaffected by GID mutations, revealing an unanticipated specificity of the Gal4-Tra1 interaction
Continuous measurement of apparent Poisson's ratio for yarn based on omni-directional diameters
We proposed a new method for measuring apparent Poisson's ratio for yarn and developed a new tensile tester equipped with a digital micrometer that can measure the omni-directional diameter of the yarn annularly while the yarn is elongated. Values of apparent Poisson's ratio were obtained from the longitudinal and transverse strains continuously. The mean diameter measured omni-directionally was used to calculate the transverse strain for each longitudinal strain. We tested five spun yarns, one monofilament yarn and two filament yarns and obtained values of apparent Poisson's ratio against longitudinal strain for all samples. Apparent Poisson's ratio was not constant for spun and filament yarns, while it was constant for monofilament yarn. When the longitudinal strain was low, apparent Poisson's ratios of ring spun yarns and filament yarns were large, owing to the fiber packing density. As the longitudinal strain increased, apparent Poisson's ratio gradually decreased. Furthermore, we approximated the relationship between apparent Poisson's ratio and the longitudinal strain using a power function. The apparent Poisson values can be used in the simulation of fabrics.ArticleTEXTILE RESEARCH JOURNAL. 87(6):739-746 (2017)journal articl
Uncoupling lifespan and healthspan in Caenorhabditis elegans longevity mutants
Aging research has been very successful at identifying signaling pathways and evolutionarily conserved genes that extend lifespan with the assumption that an increase in lifespan will also increase healthspan. However, it is largely unknown whether we are extending the healthy time of life or simply prolonging a period of frailty with increased incidence of age-associated diseases. Here we use Caenorhabditis elegans, one of the premiere systems for lifespan studies, to determine whether lifespan and healthspan are intrinsically correlated. We conducted multiple cellular and organismal assays on wild type as well as four long-lived mutants (insulin/insulin-like growth factor-1, dietary restriction, protein translation, mitochondrial signaling) in a longitudinal manner to determine the health of the animals as they age. We find that some long-lived mutants performed better than wild type when measured chronologically (number of days). However, all long-lived mutants increased the proportion of time spent in a frail state. Together, these data suggest that lifespan can no longer be the sole parameter of interest and reveal the importance of evaluating multiple healthspan parameters for future studies on antiaging interventions
Distinct features of nucleolus-associated domains in mouse embryonic stem cells [preprint]
Background Heterochromatin in eukaryotic interphase cells frequently localizes to the nucleolar periphery (nucleolus-associated domains, NADs) and the nuclear lamina (lamina-associated domains, LADs). Gene expression in somatic cell NADs is generally low, but NADs have not been characterized in mammalian stem cells. Results Here, we generated the first genome-wide map of NADs in mouse embryonic stem cells (mESCs) via deep sequencing of chromatin associated with biochemically-purified nucleoli. As we had observed in mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs), the large Type I subset of NADs overlaps with constitutive LADs and is enriched for features of constitutive heterochromatin, including late replication timing and low gene density and expression levels. Conversely, the Type II NAD subset overlaps with loci that are not lamina-associated, but in mESCs, Type II NADs are much less abundant than in MEFs. mESC NADs are also much less enriched in H3K27me3 modified regions than are NADs in MEFs. Additionally, comparision of MEF and mESC NADs revealed enrichment of developmentally regulated genes in cell type-specific NADs. Together, these data indicate that NADs are a developmentally dynamic component of heterochromatin. Conclusions These studies implicate association with the nucleolar periphery as a mechanism for developmentally-regulated gene silencing, and will facilitate future studies of NADs during mESC differentiation
