Persistent currents in normal metal rings
The authors have measured the magnetic response of 33 individual cold
mesoscopic gold rings, one ring at a time. The response of some sufficiently
small rings has a component that is periodic in the flux through the ring and
is attributed to a persistent current. Its period is close to h/e, and its sign
and amplitude vary between rings. The amplitude distribution agrees well with
predictions for the typical h/e current in diffusive rings. The temperature
dependence of the amplitude, measured for four rings, is also consistent with
theory. These results disagree with previous measurements of three individual
metal rings that showed a much larger periodic response than expected. The use
of a scanning SQUID microscope enabled in situ measurements of the sensor
background. A paramagnetic linear susceptibility and a poorly understood

Torque magnetometry study of the spin reorientation transition and temperature-dependent magnetocrystalline anisotropy in NdCo5
We present the results of torque magnetometry and magnetic susceptibility measurements to study in detail the spin reorientation transition (SRT) and magnetic anisotropy in the permanent magnet NdCo5. We further show simulations of the measurements using first-principles calculations based on density-functional theory and the disordered local moment picture of magnetism at finite temperatures. The good agreement between theory and experimental data leads to a detailed description of the physics underpinning the SRT. In particular we are able to resolve the magnetization of, and to reveal a canting between, the Nd and Co sublattices. The torque measurements carried out in the ac and ab planes near the easy direction allow us to estimate the anisotropy constants, K 1, K 2 and K 4 and their temperature dependences. Torque curves, τ(γ) recorded by varying the direction of a constant magnetic field in the crystallographic ac plane show a reversal in the polarity as the temperature is changed across the SRT (240 < T < 285 K). Within this domain, τ(γ) exhibits unusual features different to those observed above and below the transition. The single crystals of NdCo5 were grown using the optical floating zone technique
Tunability of the spin reorientation transitions with pressure in NdCo5
We present pressure-dependent magnetization measurements carried out in the domain of the spin reorientation transitions (SRTs) of a NdCo5 single crystal. The application of a hydrostatic pressure leads to a shift in the SRTs to higher temperatures. This shift is found to be very sensitive to pressure, with the SRT temperatures increasing at a rate of ≈17 K/GPa. To explain the experimental results, we have also performed first-principles calculations of the SRT temperatures for different applied strains, which corroborate the experimental findings. The calculations attribute the pressure dependence of the SRTs to a faster weakening of the Co contribution to the magnetocrystalline anisotropy with pressure compared to the Nd contribution
A Terraced Scanning Superconducting Quantum Interference Device Susceptometer with Sub-Micron Pickup Loops
Superconducting Quantum Interference Devices (SQUIDs) can have excellent spin
sensitivity depending on their magnetic flux noise, pick-up loop diameter, and
distance from the sample. We report a family of scanning SQUID susceptometers
with terraced tips that position the pick-up loops 300 nm from the sample. The
600 nm - 2 um pickup loops, defined by focused ion beam, are integrated into a
12-layer optical lithography process allowing flux-locked feedback, in situ
background subtraction and optimized flux noise. These features enable a

UVA irradiation of human skin vasodilates arterial vasculature and lowers blood pressure independently of nitric oxide synthase
The incidence of hypertension and cardiovascular disease correlates with latitude and rises in winter. The molecular basis for this remains obscure. As nitric oxide (NO) metabolites are abundant in human skin we hypothesised that exposure to UVA may mobilise NO bioactivity into the circulation to exert beneficial cardiovascular effects independently of vitamin D. In 24 healthy volunteers irradiation of the skin with 2 Standard Erythemal Doses of UVA lowered BP, with concomitant decreases in circulating nitrate and rises in nitrite concentrations. Unexpectedly, acute dietary intervention aimed at modulating systemic nitrate availability had no effect on UV-induced hemodynamic changes, indicating that cardiovascular effects were not mediated via direct utilization of circulating nitrate. UVA irradiation of the forearm caused increased blood flow independently of NO-synthase activity, suggesting involvement of pre-formed cutaneous NO stores. Confocal fluorescence microscopy studies of human skin pre-labelled with the NO-imaging probe DAF2-DA revealed that UVA-induced NO release occurs in a NOS-independent, dose-dependent fashion, with the majority of the light-sensitive NO pool in the upper epidermis. Collectively, our data provide mechanistic insights into an important function of the skin in modulating systemic NO bioavailability which may account for the latitudinal and seasonal variations of BP and cardiovascular disease.Journal of Investigative Dermatology accepted article preview online, 20 January 2014
