Tacoma’s Lincoln District: Assessing and Improving Collaboration between City Government and the Vietnamese Business Community
Known as The City of Destiny , the city of Tacoma and its government continue to build on urban planning projects in hopes of making the town a true destination city. Amongst the district roadway improvements, the extension of the lightrail, and the renovation project passed for the Tacoma Dome, the developers are in full flux. The funding has been passed and the construction in motion -- but what about the communities? This research aims to gauge the tensions that emerge within the relationship of community engagement and urban planning
Preoperative electrophysiological characterization of patients with primary macula-involving rhegmatogenous retinal detachment
Purpose: To determine 1) which components of retinal function are impaired after rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, 2) which outer retinal pathways (rod- or cone-driven) are more severely affected, and 3) whether there is concomitant inner retinal dysfunction.
Methods: We conducted a prospective observational study in a large academic institution. We performed preoperative electroretinography on eight patients to assess outer and inner retinal function. In all cases, a comparison between the eye with the detached retina and the control fellow eye was made.
Results: Eyes with a detached retina had significantly lower a-wave and b-wave amplitudes with respect to both rod- and cone-dominated testing parameters (P < 0.05) and reduced 30 Hz flicker responses compared to fellow eyes (P < 0.05); the effect size was similar for all significantly reduced parameters (r~0.6). There were no significant differences between eyes with detached retinas and control fellow eyes with respect to b/a-wave ratios, a-wave latencies, or b-wave latencies.
Conclusion: Patients with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment have preoperative outer retinal dysfunction equally affecting both rod- and cone-driven pathways, and they have minimal inner retinal dysfunction

Energy use efficiency of organic and agroforestry farming systems
Children’s Literature, Translation and Censorship: The Spanish Translations of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn under Franco’s Dictatorship (1939-1975)
Children’s literature usually consists of texts that are written by adults for a child readership. This situation results in children’s literature operating as an adult-constructed notion, based on assumptions about children and childhood. Due to children’s literature being a constructed notion, a space for adult manipulation of texts for children is thus created. Subsequently, texts written for children are often imbued with adult ideologies. This also occurs in the translation of children’s literature. In order to explore the influences of adult ideological agendas on the translation of children’s literature, this thesis examines the production of texts translated for children under state censorship during Franco’s Spain (1939-1975), with a particular focus on the translations of Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885). Through a comparative study of the distinct versions of the translations of the novel, produced across different stages of Franco’s dictatorship, along with the censorship records, this study will uncover how certain Issues of the novel have induced translation problems, due to the politico-ideological constraints that the receptor system imposed on the production of texts translated for children. At the same time, through a detailed examination of the translators’ solutions to the translation problems present in Huckleberry Finn, this study will also shed light on the dynamics of children’s literary system: despite the constraints imposed by the regime on texts translated for children, methods were designed so as to tackle and even to challenge the censorship constraints. Lastly, this study also highlights the way that theories developed in translation studies can enhance children’s literature studies and vice versa

Choices of financial reporting regimes and techniques and underlying decision-making processes : a case study analysis of a port authority
This paper examines how financial reporting modes are determined within a company, from the perspective of perceived costs and benefits. The modes investigated include financial reporting regimes (e.g. IFRS, UK GAAP) and the financial reporting techniques which support them (e.g. valuing intangibles and investments, treatment of development costs). A stated preference approach is adopted and applied to a fieldwork analysis of the functioning of a large port authority, which was a member of a group and prepared both consolidated and subsidiary accounts. The analysis is largely qualitative, exploring in-depth such matters as key factors in making choices, the decision-making processes behind choices, and the staging of decisions, but underpinned by a quantitative basis, using a metric for determining net benefits of financial reporting regimes and techniques. Our analysis aims to improve our understanding of a company’s choice processes underlying its financial reporting, including its handling of complexity and uncertainty, and its use of innovations in techniques and organisational forms for decision support
NADH oxidation drives respiratory Na+ transport in mitochondria from Yarrowia lipolytica
It is generally assumed that respiratory complexes exclusively use protons to energize the inner mitochondrial membrane. Here we show that oxidation of NADH by submitochondrial particles (SMPs) from the yeast Yarrowia lipolytica is coupled to protonophore-resistant Na+ uptake, indicating that a redox-driven, primary Na+ pump is operative in the inner mitochondrial membrane. By purification and reconstitution into proteoliposomes, a respiratory NADH dehydrogenase was identified which coupled NADH-dependent reduction of ubiquinone (1.4μmolmin−1mg−1) to Na+ translocation (2.0μmolmin−1mg−1). NADH-driven Na+ transport was sensitive towards rotenone, a specific inhibitor of complex I. We conclude that mitochondria from Y. lipolytica contain a NADH-driven Na+ pump and propose that it represents the complex I of the respiratory chain. Our study indicates that energy conversion by mitochondria does not exclusively rely on the proton motive force but may benefit from the electrochemical Na+ gradient established by complex
