Native Forest and Climate Change — The Role of the Subtropical Forest, Potentials, and Threats

    Get PDF
The subtropical rainforest of Argentina, called Yungas, has been subjected to rapid deforestation and degradation processes in recent years, especially in the lower district: "Pedemontana Jungle" (PJ; ≤900 m.a.s.l.). In Salta, in the north of the country, the rate of deforestation is around three times higher than the world average. The disappearance of PJ significantly limits the area of contact between Yungas and Chaco forest, which could have important consequences for natural and cultural biodiversity in the region (the largest number of aboriginal ethnic groups live here, most of which depend on native forest for their existence and identity). In addition, the loss and degradation of forests is the second largest sector of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to the atmosphere (about 18%), affecting the world climate. We present a synthesis of different studies developed in PJ forests, observing its role as reservoirs of carbon and discussing issues that could influence the total capacity of carbon sequestration of the same. This will contribute to build the reliable database on the sequestration potential, which will facilitate standardization of units, reduction of uncertainties, and contribution to a more efficient strategy to limit the GHG emission to the environment, providing some learning and useful recommendations

This study analyzes the energy potential of a linear Fresnel solar (LFS) system based on a case study of the equipment mounted in the city of San Carlos, Salta province, Argentina. The average thermal power and thermal losses from the absorber and field pipes to the environment were calculated by hour, taking into account the hourly direct normal irradiance (DNI) obtained by Liu-Jordan method, based on global horizontal irradiation (GHI) measurements. This paper shows the amount of thermal energy that the LFS under study is able to generate for processes such as hard water desalination, electric power generation, and drying of vegetables. The results of the calculations show that the linear Fresnel system is capable of producing steam with thermal energy in the range of 460–1200 MJth, which means an annual production of 243 GJth. As for the power block, it is possible to obtain an annual generation of 1.5 GWhe, depending on operating conditions of the steam engine (288 rpm regime at 6 bar). The production of desalinated water reaches the range of 98–112 m3, depending on whether the steam is previously used for power electric generation or not.Fil: Dellicompagni, Pablo Roberto. Renewable energy assessment arises in the context of Territorial Planning of Lerma Valley in Salta as a strategy for regional development and improved quality of life and environment. The methodology applied is based on Multi- Criteria Evaluation tools, Geographic Information Systems application and participatory consultation techniques. The results were oriented to territorial diagnosis, energy resources assessment and alternative technologies as well as planning and management proposals. At diagnosis, renewable energies were identified as viable options in production and access to basic services. The potential offer of renewable resources was high as to solar radiation and hydraulic resources but moderate as to wind potential. It was varied in the case of organic energy and biomass due to multiple sources. Technological alternatives and actions to improve the energy scenario in Lerma Valley were assessed and the following priorities were established: environmental education, strategic energy planning and varied applications of solar energy (dryers, greenhouses, bioclimatic architecture, water collectors and cookers). Energy policies that are ?more? sustainable were suggested, such as: coordinating the energy sector with both other sectors and action levels within the framework of an integrated land use planning, strengthening local institutions for energy management, and overcoming limitations on local transfer of renewable energy. Renewable energies should be considered as an opportunity and challenge to promote processes of ?change? in the region through a reaffirmed commitment to environment and society.Fil: Belmonte, Silvina. The management of forests as carbon (C) reservoirs could be a valid strategy for mitigating global climate change. In Salta, Argentina, there is an urgent need for updated information on biomass stocks in order to assess the C sequestering and release made by native forests. We studied three ecosystems (Chaco, Yungas and shrubland) by combining different data: a) field-estimated above-ground biomass (AGB); b) field-spectral data, and c) spectral data from remote sensing. AGB was estimated through allometric equations. Radiometric measurements were synthesized into a set of spectral vegetation indices (VI). The satellite data was calibrated with those obtained through field radiometry, allowing us to find a predictive AGB model which indicates an AGB average of 85 ± 250 t.ha-1 for the center of the province of Salta. The model which was finally selected increases the level of estimate detail made at the national level and will allow the monitoring of such data. The municipal solid waste (MSW), traditionally they have been deposited to opened sky in Lerma's Valley (Salta). Because a current provincial proyect, the MSW might begin to deposite in a sanitary regional landfill. The mentioned project does not include the MSW energy utilization. In this work they were considered to be energetic potential resources. Two classes of estimations were realized from different methodologies: a) heating power of the RSU and potential production of electricity and b) potential biogas to be obtaining and electrical generation. The utilization of the energetic potential of these residues, added to the benefits for gas mitigation greenhouse effect, and other environmental aspects, undoubtedly they will contribute to a better quality of life to the population of the Valley.Fil: Manrique, Silvina Magdalena.
