When Social Influence Meets Item Inference
Research issues and data mining techniques for product recommendation and
viral marketing have been widely studied. Existing works on seed selection in
social networks do not take into account the effect of product recommendations
in e-commerce stores. In this paper, we investigate the seed selection problem
for viral marketing that considers both effects of social influence and item
inference (for product recommendation). We develop a new model, Social Item
Graph (SIG), that captures both effects in form of hyperedges. Accordingly, we
formulate a seed selection problem, called Social Item Maximization Problem
(SIMP), and prove the hardness of SIMP. We design an efficient algorithm with
performance guarantee, called Hyperedge-Aware Greedy (HAG), for SIMP and
develop a new index structure, called SIG-index, to accelerate the computation
of diffusion process in HAG. Moreover, to construct realistic SIG models for
SIMP, we develop a statistical inference based framework to learn the weights
of hyperedges from data. Finally, we perform a comprehensive evaluation on our
proposals with various baselines. Experimental result validates our ideas and
demonstrates the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed model and
algorithms over baselines.Comment: 12 page
THE CORRELATION OF GOLF PUTTING CLUB HEAD VELOCITY AND GRIP FORCE FOR EACH PHASE
We investigate the correlation of golf putting club head velocity and grip force in different phases during the putting stroke. Five elite college players (handicap: 2~8) executed a putt as accurately as possible to reach a target distance of 12ft. The Novel System and were used to measure the grip force and club head velocity. The lowest club head velocity and grip force both occurred at address up to the top of backswing (phase I). The club head velocity and grip force started increasing during the downswing and reached its peak before impact (phase II), and decreased after impact to finish (phase III). The mean club head velocity and grip force for Phase I, II, III in order are 0.33m/s, 0.92m/s, 0.87m/s; 28.09N, 54.77N, 50.76N. Club head velocity was significantly correlated to grip force in phase II and III (r=0.937; r=0.866). The similar variation pattern of club head speed and grip force may give better control to the putter during the impact and produce more consistent putting stroke
DISTRIBUTION OF GRIP PRESSURE THROUGHOUT THE PHASES OF PUTTING IN ELITE GOLF COLLEGE PLAYERS
The purpose of this study is to investigate the distribution of grip pressure, force and the peak pressure of different phases during the putting stroke. Five elite college players with handicaps of 2-8 participated in the study. The Novel Pliance-x System and 150Hz 8- camera Motion Analysis Corporation System were used to collect grip pressure and identify each phase of the putting stroke. At each phase of the putting stroke, average grip pressure, peak pressure and grip force were investigated. Results indicated that lowest grip pressure occurred at address up to the top of backswing (2.41±1.36 Kpa). Grip pressure started to increase during the downswing and reached its peak, 0.02±0.05s, before impact (4.70±1.97 Kpa). The pressure reduced again after impact (4.36±2.06 Kpa). Results indicate that grip pressure does not remain the same throughout the stroke
Behavioral and Neurobiological Changes in C57BL/6 Mouse Exposed to Cuprizone: Effects of Antipsychotics
Recent human studies suggest a role for altered oligodendrocytes in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. Our recent animal study has reported some schizophrenia-like behaviors in mice exposed to cuprizone (Xu et al., 2009), a copper chelator that has been shown to selectively damage the white matter. This study was to explore mechanisms underlying the behavioral changes in cuprizone-exposed mice and to examine effects of the antipsychotics haloperidol, clozapine and quetiapine on the changes in the mice. Mice given cuprizone for 14 days showed a deficit in the prepulse inhibition of acoustic startle response and higher dopamine in the prefrontal cortex (PFC), which changes were not seen in mice given cuprizone plus antipsychotics. Mice given cuprizone for 21 days showed lower spontaneous alternations in Y-maze, which was not seen in mice treated with cuprizone plus the antipsychotics. Mice given cuprizone for 28 days displayed less social interactions, which was not seen in mice given cuprizone plus clozapine/quetiapine, but was seen in mice given cuprizone plus haloperidol. Mice given cuprizone for 42 days showed myelin sheath loss and lower myelin basic protein in PFC, caudate putamen, and hippocampus. The white matter damage in PFC was attenuated in mice given cuprizone plus clozapine/haloperidol. But the white matter damage in caudate putamen and hippocampus was only attenuated by clozapine and quetiapine, not by haloperidol. These results help us to understand the behavioral changes and provide experimental evidence for the protective effects of antipsychotics on white matter damage in cuprizone-exposed mice
Assessing Computational Amino Acid β-Turn Propensities with a Phage-Displayed Combinatorial Library and Directed Evolution
SummaryStructure propensities of amino acids are important determinants in guiding proteins' local and global structure formation. We constructed a phage display library—a hexa-HIS tag upstream of a CXXC (X stands for any of the 20 natural amino acids) motif appending N-terminal to the minor capsid protein pIII of M13KE filamentous phage—and developed a novel directed-evolution procedure to select for amino acid sequences forming increasingly stable β-turns in the disulfide-bridged CXXC motif. The sequences that emerged from the directed-evolution cycles were in good agreement with type II β-turn propensities derived from surveys of known protein structures, in particular, Pro-Gly forming a type II β-turn. The agreement strongly supported the notion that β-turn formation plays an active role in initiating local structure folding in proteins
The variation of relative magnetic helicity around major flares
We have investigated the variation of magnetic helicity over a span of
several days around the times of 11 X-class flares which occurred in seven
active regions (NOAA 9672, 10030, 10314, 10486, 10564, 10696, and 10720) using
the magnetograms taken by the Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI) on board the Solar
and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO). As a major result we found that each of
these major flares was preceded by a significant helicity accumulation over a
long period (0.5 to a few days). Another finding is that the helicity
accumulates at a nearly constant rate and then becomes nearly constant before
the flares. This led us to distinguish the helicity variation into two phases:
a phase of monotonically increasing helicity and the following phase of
relatively constant helicity. As expected, the amount of helicity accumulated
shows a modest correlation with time-integrated soft X-ray flux during flares.
However, the average helicity change rate in the first phase shows even
stronger correlation with the time-integrated soft X-ray flux. We discuss the
physical implications of this result and the possibility that this
characteristic helicity variation pattern can be used as an early warning sign
for solar eruptions
Rapid Remission in Peripheral T-Cell Lymphoma of the Nasal Type by the Bortezomib plus CHOP Therapy
Peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL) is rare and difficult to treat for its high relapse rate. The authors report a case of PTCL of the skin, regarding which clinical and pathological features, treatment, and prognosis were discussed. A 66-year-old woman was admitted with complaints of enlarging erythematous noduloplaques on the right anterior tibial skin for one year and similar lesions on the left for 6 months. Surgical resection of right leg lesion and biopsy of enlarged inguinal lymph nodes histologically indicated a PTCL of the nasal type. The patient was treated by CHOP plus bortezomib, reached complete remission just after two courses of chemotherapy and then received another two as consolidation. The patient remained in remission for 11 months until local relapse. As for cutaneous lesions, detailed lymph node examination and prompt tissue biopsy are judicious choices prior to any medical management. The chemotherapy consisting of bortezomib and CHOP is safe and efficient in PTCL of the skin
YAO is a nucleolar WD40-repeat protein critical for embryogenesis and gametogenesis in Arabidopsis
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>In flowering plants, gametogenesis generates multicellular male and female gametophytes. In the model system Arabidopsis, the male gametophyte or pollen grain contains two sperm cells and a vegetative cell. The female gametophyte or embryo sac contains seven cells, namely one egg, two synergids, one central cell and three antipodal cells. Double fertilization of the central cell and egg produces respectively a triploid endosperm and a diploid zygote that develops further into an embryo. The genetic control of the early embryo patterning, especially the initiation of the first zygotic division and the positioning of the cell plate, is largely unknown.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Here we report the characterization of a mutation, <it>yaozhe (yao)</it>, that causes zygote arrest and misplacement of cell plate of the zygote, leading to early embryo lethality. In addition, gametophyte development is partially impaired. A small portion of the mutant embryo sacs are arrested at four-nucleate stage with aberrant nuclear positioning. Furthermore, the competence of male gametophytes is also compromised. <it>YAO </it>encodes a nucleolar protein with seven WD-repeats. Its homologues in human and yeast have been shown to be components of the U3 snoRNP complex and function in 18S rRNA processing. <it>YAO </it>is expressed ubiquitously, with high level of expression in tissues under active cell divisions, including embryo sacs, pollen, embryos, endosperms and root tips.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Phenotypic analysis indicated that <it>YAO </it>is required for the correct positioning of the first zygotic division plane and plays a critical role in gametogenesis in Arabidopsis. Since YAO is a nucleolar protein and its counterparts in yeast and human are components of the U3 snoRNP complex, we therefore postulate that YAO is most likely involved in rRNA processing in plants as well.</p
Hematopoietic and lymphatic cancers in patients with periodontitis : a systematic review and meta-analysis
Numerous studies have explored the correlation of periodontal disease (PD) with risk of hematopoietic and lymphatic cancers, but the findings were inconsistent. Therefore, we did a meta-analysis to ascertain the correlation of PD with risk of incident hematopoietic and lymphatic cancers. The authors searched relevant studies in databases (PubMed, Web of Science, and MEDLINE). The summary relative risk (RR) along with 95% confidence interval (CI) was calculated by use of random or fixed effects models. Six studies were included in qualitative synthesis. The pooled analysis revealed that PD was significantly associated with an increased risk of hematopoietic and lymphatic cancers (RR = 1.17; 95% CI = 1.07?1.27; P = 0). Stratified analysis showed the association of PD with hematopoietic and lymphatic cancers remained significant in the never smokers (RR = 1.28; 95% CI = 1.07?1.54; P = 0.007), and in the American population (RR = 1.17; 95% CI = 1.05?1.30; P = 0.003), respectively. Never smokers population and the American population with PD have a higher risk of developing hematopoietic and lymphatic cancers. PD might be considered as a risk factor for hematopoietic and lymphatic cancers
