Laser induced magnetization switching in films with perpendicular anisotropy: a comparison between measurements and a multi-macrospin model
Thermally-assisted ultra-fast magnetization reversal in a DC magnetic field
for magnetic multilayer thin films with perpendicular anisotropy has been
investigated in the time domain using femtosecond laser heating. The experiment
is set-up as an optically pumped stroboscopic Time Resolved Magneto-Optical
Kerr Effect magnetometer. It is observed that a modest laser fluence of about
0.3 mJ/square-cm induces switching of the magnetization in an applied field
much less than the DC coercivity (0.8 T) on the sub-nanosecond time-scale. This
switching was thermally-assisted by the energy from the femtosecond pump-pulse.
The experimental results are compared with a model based on the Landau
Lifschitz Bloch equation. The comparison supports a description of the reversal
process as an ultra-fast demagnetization and partial recovery followed by
slower thermally activated switching due to the spin system remaining at an

Ray and wave chaos in asymmetric resonant optical cavities
Optical resonators are essential components of lasers and other
wavelength-sensitive optical devices. A resonator is characterized by a set of
modes, each with a resonant frequency omega and resonance width Delta
omega=1/tau, where tau is the lifetime of a photon in the mode. In a
cylindrical or spherical dielectric resonator, extremely long-lived resonances
are due to `whispering gallery' modes in which light circulates around the
perimeter trapped by total internal reflection. These resonators emit light
isotropically. Recently, a new category of asymmetric resonant cavities (ARCs)
has been proposed in which substantial shape deformation leads to partially
chaotic ray dynamics. This has been predicted to give rise to a universal,
frequency-independent broadening of the whispering-gallery resonances, and
highly anisotropic emission. Here we present solutions of the wave equation for
ARCs which confirm many aspects of the earlier ray-optics model, but also
reveal interesting frequency-dependent effects characteristic of quantum chaos.
For small deformations the lifetime is controlled by evanescent leakage, the
optical analogue of quantum tunneling. We find that the lifetime is much
shortened by a process known as `chaos-assisted tunneling'. In contrast, for
large deformations (~10%) some resonances are found to have longer lifetimes
than predicted by the ray chaos model due to `dynamical localization'.Comment: 4 pages RevTeX with 7 Postscript figure
The Chemical Abundances Of Stars In The Halo (CASH) Project. II. A Sample Of 14 Extremely Metal-Poor Stars
We present a comprehensive abundance analysis of 20 elements for 16 new low-metallicity stars from the Chemical Abundances of Stars in the Halo (CASH) project. The abundances have been derived from both Hobby-Eberly Telescope High Resolution Spectrograph snapshot spectra (R similar to 15,000) and corresponding high-resolution (R similar to 35,000) Magellan Inamori Kyocera Echelle spectra. The stars span a metallicity range from [Fe/H] from -2.9 to -3.9, including four new stars with [Fe/H] < -3.7. We find four stars to be carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars, confirming the trend of increasing [C/Fe] abundance ratios with decreasing metallicity. Two of these objects can be classified as CEMP-no stars, adding to the growing number of these objects at [Fe/H]< -3. We also find four neutron-capture-enhanced stars in the sample, one of which has [Eu/Fe] of 0.8 with clear r-process signatures. These pilot sample stars are the most metal-poor ([Fe/H] less than or similar to -3.0) of the brightest stars included in CASH and are used to calibrate a newly developed, automated stellar parameter and abundance determination pipeline. This code will be used for the entire similar to 500 star CASH snapshot sample. The repertory of bone marrow progenitor cells associated with lymphogenic metastasis in patients with invasive carcinoma of no special type
The high mortality of patients with breast cancer is determined by metastatic disease. It is thought that the metastatic disease development associated with the repertory of bone marrow progenitor cells in breast cancer patients. In our study the correlation between the bone marrow progenitor cells presences in the tumor and blood of patients and the lymphogenic metastasis development was studied. The main clinical and pathological parameters of 24 patients with invasive breast carcinoma of non-specific type were analyzed. Endothelial progenitor cells, mesenchymal stem cells, macrophage precursors, hematopoietic progenitor cells were detected with specific antibodies against CD34, CD133, CD90, VEGFR1, CD11b, CD45, CD202 in the cell-rich fluid from frozen tumor. The amount of MCP-1 in the patients blood serum was assessed by enzymelinked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), at a wavelength of 450 nm. The cytokines concentration was calculated from the calibration plot. The program package Statistica 10.0. was used for statistical data processing. The high risk of lymphogenic metastasis in patients who didn't complete a neoadjuvant chemotherapy course was associated with the number of HPC, EPC and MSC in tumor and MCP-1 in blood
Novel Diagnostic Model for the Deficient and Excess Pulse Qualities
The deficient and excess pulse qualities (DEPs) are the two representatives of the deficiency and excess syndromes, respectively. Despite its importance in the objectification of pulse diagnosis, a reliable classification model for the DEPs has not been reported to date. In this work, we propose a classification method for the DEPs based on a clinical study. First, through factor analysis and Fisher's discriminant analysis, we show that all the pulse amplitudes obtained at various applied pressures at Chon, Gwan, and Cheok contribute on equal orders of magnitude in the determination of the DEPs. Then, we discuss that the pulse pressure or the average pulse amplitude is appropriate for describing the collective behaviors of the pulse amplitudes and a simple and reliable classification can be constructed from either quantity. Finally, we propose an enhanced classification model that combines the two complementary variables sequentially
Novel Diagnostic Algorithm for the Floating and Sunken Pulse Qualities and Its Clinical Test
We propose a novel classification algorithm for the floating pulse and the sunken pulse using a newly defined coefficient (Cfs). To examine the validity of the proposed algorithm, we carried out a clinical test in which 12 oriental medical doctors made pairwise diagnoses on the pulses of volunteering subjects. 169 subjects were simultaneously diagnosed by paired doctors, and the diagnoses in 121 subjects were concordant, yielding an accuracy of 72% and a Matthews correlation coefficient of 0.42, which indicates reasonable agreement between doctors. Two sample T-tests showed that subjects in the sunken pulse group had significantly higher BMI and Cfs (P < .05) than those in the floating pulse group. The pulse classification by the algorithm converged with the diagnoses of paired doctors with an accuracy up to 69%. With these results, we confirm the validity of the novel classification algorithm for the floating and sunken pulses
DNA bending by M.EcoKI methyltransferase is coupled to nucleotide flipping
The maintenance methyltransferase M.EcoKI recognizes the bipartite DNA sequence 5′-AACNNNNNNGTGC-3′, where N is any nucleotide. M.EcoKI preferentially methylates a sequence already containing a methylated adenine at or complementary to the underlined bases in the sequence. We find that the introduction of a single-stranded gap in the middle of the non-specific spacer, of up to 4 nt in length, does not reduce the binding affinity of M.EcoKI despite the removal of non-sequence-specific contacts between the protein and the DNA phosphate backbone. Surprisingly, binding affinity is enhanced in a manner predicted by simple polymer models of DNA flexibility. However, the activity of the enzyme declines to zero once the single-stranded region reaches 4 nt in length. This indicates that the recognition of methylation of the DNA is communicated between the two methylation targets not only through the protein structure but also through the DNA structure. Furthermore, methylation recognition requires base flipping in which the bases targeted for methylation are swung out of the DNA helix into the enzyme. By using 2-aminopurine fluorescence as the base flipping probe we find that, although flipping occurs for the intact duplex, no flipping is observed upon introduction of a gap. Our data and polymer model indicate that M.EcoKI bends the non-specific spacer and that the energy stored in a double-stranded bend is utilized to force or flip out the bases. This energy is not stored in gapped duplexes. In this way, M.EcoKI can determine the methylation status of two adenine bases separated by a considerable distance in double-stranded DNA and select the required enzymatic response
