Kindergarten teachers\u27 recommendations and individual children\u27s test scores will be collected and analyzed.     The oldest known spatially-explicit archaeological excavation, conducted in Brixham cave, Devon, in 1858, is reconstructed using geographic information systems technology. Two dimensional plots of individual fossil taxa and flint artefacts demonstrate the utility of the technique for elucidating taphonomy and palaeobiology. The cave served as a den for hibernating brown bears, as a den for hyena and cave lion, and as a reliquary for their prey

    Migration Pathways, Behavioural Thermoregulation and Overwintering Grounds of Blue Sharks in the Northwest Atlantic

    The blue shark Prionace glauca is the most abundant large pelagic shark in the Atlantic Ocean. Although recaptures of tagged sharks have shown that the species is highly migratory, migration pathways towards the overwintering grounds remain poorly understood. We used archival satellite pop-up tags to track 23 blue sharks over a mean period of 88 days as they departed the coastal waters of North America in the autumn. Within 1–2 days of entering the Gulf Stream (median date of 21 Oct), all sharks initiated a striking diel vertical migration, taking them from a mean nighttime depth of 74 m to a mean depth of 412 m during the day as they appeared to pursue vertically migrating squid and fish prey. Although functionally blind at depth, calculations suggest that there would be a ∼2.5-fold thermoregulatory advantage to swimming and feeding in the markedly cooler deep waters, even if there was any reduced foraging success associated with the extreme depth. Noting that the Gulf Stream current speeds are reduced at depth, we used a detailed circulation model of the North Atlantic to examine the influence of the diving behaviour on the advection experienced by the sharks. However, there was no indication that the shark diving resulted in a significant modification of their net migratory pathway. The relative abundance of deep-diving sharks, swordfish, and sperm whales in the Gulf Stream and adjacent waters suggests that it may serve as a key winter feeding ground for large pelagic predators in the North Atlantic

    Updated reproductive parameters for the shortfin mako (Isurus oxyrinchus) in the North Atlantic Ocean with inferences of distribution by sex and reproductive stage

    Prompted by recent concern about the stock status of the shortfin mako (Isurus oxyrinchus) in the North Atlantic Ocean, we examined reproductive data from 731 individuals (351 females and 380 males) collected by 3 scientific organizations to improve estimates of size and age at maturity. Males ranged in size from 70 to 283 cm fork length (FL) and females from 71 to 338 cm FL. Females matured between 263 and 291 cm FL, with an estimated median length at maturity (L50) of 280 cm FL and a median weight at maturity (WT50) of 275 kg. Males matured between 173 and 187 cm FL, with an L50 of 182 cm FL and WT50 of 64 kg. Catch records from 4 international programs were also examined to investigate spatiotemporal variation in the distribution of life history stages based on updated size-at-maturity estimates and to identify potential parturition and nursery grounds. These records identified the Gulf of Mexico and the eastern North Atlantic Ocean off Portugal as birthing and nursery areas, with the most important nursery area occurring in the western North Atlantic Ocean.FCT MAKO-WIDE (Ref.     Sequential SNARE disassembly and GATE-16–GOS-28 complex assembly mediated by distinct NSF activities drives Golgi membrane fusion

    Characterization of mammalian NSF (G274E) and Drosophila NSF (comatose) mutants revealed an evolutionarily conserved NSF activity distinct from ATPase-dependent SNARE disassembly that was essential for Golgi membrane fusion. Analysis of mammalian NSF function during cell-free assembly of Golgi cisternae from mitotic Golgi fragments revealed that NSF disassembles Golgi SNAREs during mitotic Golgi fragmentation. A subsequent ATPase-independent NSF activity restricted to the reassembly phase is essential for membrane fusion. NSF/Ξ±-SNAP catalyze the binding of GATE-16 to GOS-28, a Golgi v-SNARE, in a manner that requires ATP but not ATP hydrolysis. GATE-16 is essential for NSF-driven Golgi reassembly and precludes GOS-28 from binding to its cognate t-SNARE, syntaxin-5. We suggest that this occurs at the inception of Golgi reassembly to protect the v-SNARE and regulate SNARE function

    Prevention and Screening for Cardiometabolic Disease Following Hypertensive Disorders in Pregnancy in Low-Resource Settings:A Systematic Review and Delphi Study

    Hypertensive disorders in pregnancy (HDP) and cardiometabolic and kidney diseases are rising in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). While HDP are risk factors for cardiometabolic and kidney diseases, cost-effective, scalable strategies for screening and prevention in women with a history of HDP are lacking. Existing guidelines and recommendations require adaptation to LMIC settings. This article aims to generate consensus-based recommendations for the prevention and screening of cardiometabolic and kidney diseases tailored for implementation in LMICs. We conducted a systematic review of guidelines and recommendations for prevention and screening strategies for cardiometabolic and chronic kidney diseases following HDP. We searched PubMed/Medline, Embase and Cochrane Library for relevant articles and guidelines published from 2010 to 2021 from both high-income countries (HICs) and LMICs. No other filters were applied. References of included articles were also assessed for eligibility. Findings were synthesized narratively. The summary of guiding recommendations was subjected to two rounds of Delphi consensus surveys with experts experienced in LMIC settings. Fifty-four articles and 9 guidelines were identified, of which 25 were included. Thirty-five clinical recommendations were synthesized from these and classified into six domains: identification of women with HDP (4 recommendations), timing of first counseling and provision of health education (2 recommendations), structure and care setting (12 recommendations), information and communication needs (5 recommendations), cardiometabolic biomarkers (8 recommendations) and biomarkers thresholds (4 recommendations). The Delphi panel reached consensus on 33 final recommendations. These recommendations for health workers in LMICs provide practical and scalable approaches for effective screening and prevention of cardiometabolic disease following HDP. Monitoring and evaluation of implementation of these recommendations provide opportunities for reducing the escalating burden of noncommunicable diseases in LMICs
