Measurements of scattering observables for the break-up reaction
High-precision measurements of the scattering observables such as cross
sections and analyzing powers for the proton-deuteron elastic and break-up
reactions have been performed at KVI in the last two decades and elsewhere to
investigate various aspects of the three-nucleon force (3NF) effects
simultaneously. In 2006 an experiment was performed to study these effects in
break-up reaction at 135 MeV with the detection system, Big
Instrument for Nuclear polarization Analysis, BINA. BINA covers almost the
entire kinematical phase space of the break-up reaction. The results are
interpreted with the help of state-of-the-art Faddeev calculations and are

Elastic proton-deuteron scattering at intermediate energies
Observables in elastic proton-deuteron scattering are sensitive probes of the
nucleon-nucleon interaction and three-nucleon force effects. The present
experimental data base for this reaction is large, but contains a large
discrepancy between data sets for the differential cross section taken at 135
MeV/nucleon by two experimental research groups. This paper reviews the
background of this problem and presents new data taken at KVI. Differential
cross sections and analyzing powers for the and
reactions at 135 MeV/nucleon and 65 MeV/nucleon,
respectively, have been measured. The data differ significantly from previous
measurements and consistently follow the energy dependence as expected from an
interpolation of published data taken over a large range at intermediate

Pionic fusion in light-ion systems
The role of pions in the nuclear interaction has been studied in pionic fusion experiments using the AGOR accelerator facility at KVI. Pionic fusion is a highly coherent process in which two nuclei fuse to a united nucleus and the available centre-of-mass (C.M.) energy is emitted through the pion channel. The examined reactions were He-4(He-3,pi(0))Be-7 and Li-6(He-4,pi(0))B-10* and both reactions were performed at C.M. energies about 10 MeV above the coherent pion production threshold. Here, the experimental results for the Li-6(He-4,pi(0))B-10* reaction will be presented and discussed. In order to provide sensitivity to the full dynamics and relevant processes involved in the pionic fusion reaction, almost the full angular distribution of neutral pions has been determined. In a phenomenological analysis, the contributions of Legendre polynomials to reproduce the behaviour of the angular distribution have been studied. The results of this analysis confirm the importance of the clustering correlations for the Li-6(He-4,pi(0))B-10* reaction. The mass dependence of the pionic fusion reaction is in agreement with the results of the existing models extrapolated to this reaction. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved
Spin-isospin selectivity in three-nucleon forces
Precision data are presented for the break-up reaction, (2)H((p) over right arrow, pp)n, within the framework of nuclear-force studies. The experiment was carried out at KVI using a polarized-proton beam of 190 MeV impinging on a liquid-deuterium target and by exploiting the detector, BINA. Some of the vector-analyzing powers are presented and compared with state-of-the-art Faddeev calculations including three-nucleon forces effect. Significant discrepancies between the data and theoretical predictions were observed for kinematical configurations which correspond to the (2)H((p) over right arrow,(2)He)n channel. These results are compared to the (2)H((p) over right arrow, d)p reaction to test the isospin sensitivity of the present three-nucleon force models. The current modeling of two and three-nucleon forces is not sufficient to describe consistently polarization data for both isospin states. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved
Design, instrumentation and response characteristics of a 2 pi multi-detector of CsI(Tl) scintillators mounted inside the Plastic Ball spectrometer
A 2 pi hemispherical detector consisting of 64 CsI(Tl) scintillator modules covering the angular range of 80 degrees -160 degrees has been constructed. This detector is employed as the Inner Shell of the Plastic Ball detector and was used in two experimental programs concerning the study of pionic fusion in light-ion systems. The geometry and construction are presented. The improved response of the combined detectors for photons are discussed. An energy calibration method using high energy cosmic muons for the Inner Shell and the Plastic Ball has been developed and the calibration results are compared to the results of the same method in the Monte-Carlo simulation. The improved acceptance of the combined detectors for the pi(0) detection in the (6)Li((4)He, pi(0))(10)B* experiment are presented and discussed. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved
Pionic fusion Experiments at subthreshold energies
In order to study the role of pions and clustering phenomena in nuclei, two experiments have been performed using the AGOR accelerator facility. In collisions of two nuclei a pion and a fused nucleus were produced. The examined reactions were He-4(He-3, pi(0))Be-7 and Li-6(He-4, pi(0)) B-10 at beam energies about 10 MeV above the coherent pion production threshold (256 MeV and 236.4 MeV, respectively). Since the available energy is well below the pion production threshold in an elementary nucleon-nucleon process, a highly coherent mechanism is needed. We identified the reaction by measuring the fused system in the magnetic spectrometer and the produced neutral pions in the Plastic Ball detection system with large acceptance. Our experimental setup provided the exclusive cross sections by identifying all products in overdetermined kinematics. Here we present the preliminary results of die ongoing analysis for the second reaction. About 700 events fulfilling the kinematical conditions for an outgoing B-10 and a pi(0) decaying with large opening angle have been selected. Angular distribution of neutral pions will be discussed
