Male teachers’ representations about male teachers

As representações sociais predominantes na sociedade são de que as mulheres têm maiores condições para atuar profissionalmente na área da educação por se associar a imagem feminina com o papel de mãe educadora. Mas o que pensam os homens professores a este respeito? Para melhor entender essa realidade é que se justifica a realização do presente estudo que tem por objetivo investigar as representações sociais de homens professores sobre relações de gênero e presença masculina no magistério. A pesquisa de natureza qualitativa foi realizada, mediante a realização de entrevistas semiestruturadas, com cinco homens que tiveram experiência de atuar como docentes na educação básica e ensino superior. Os resultados indicam que normalmente os homens encontram dificuldade para trabalhar com crianças, especialmente porque as representações predominantes na sociedade, e incorporadas pela maioria dos docentes entrevistados, são de que as mulheres possuem habilidades específicas, relacionadas à maternidade, que favorecem o trabalho no magistério.The social representations prevalent in society are that women have better conditions to work professionally in the field of education by joining the female image with the role of educator mother. However, what do the teachers think men in this regard? To better understand this reality is that justified the present study aims to investigate the social representations of teachers men about gender relations and male presence in teaching. The qualitative research was carried out by conducting semi-structured interviews with five men who had experience of working as teachers from basic education to higher education. The results show up that normally men find difficulty at working with children, especially because the predominant representations in the society and incorporated by the majority of teachers, are that women have specific skills, related to the maternity which favor the work with in teaching
