    Proximate analysis of Lentinus squarrosulus (Mont.) Singer and Psathyrella atroumbonata Pegler

    Lentinus squarrosulus and Psathyrella atroumbonata, two mushroom species commonly found growing on dead leaves and logs, were collected from the Zaria environ and taken to the laboratory for further studies. Each of the mushroom species was separated into its stipe and pileus and used for proximate analysis. There was a highly significant difference (p<0.01) in the proximate composition of the two species. P. atroumbonata had significantly higher crude protein, crude fibre and moisture content than L. squarrosulus while the reverse was the case for ash, dry matter, crude fat and soluble carbohydrates. In addition, there was a highly significant difference (p<0.01) in the proximate composition of the different mushroom parts. The pilei contained significantly higher amounts of crude protein, crude fibre, ash, and dry matter than the stipes while the converse was the case for moisture, crude fat and soluble carbohydrates.     Cyfluthrin-induced hepatotoxicity in rats

    The hepatotoxic effect of continous administration of cyfluthrin was investigated in rats. Rats (Rattus norvegicus) were grouped into A (0 ppm) control, B (100 ppm) and C (200 ppm) with the indicatedamount of cyfluthrin administered orally for 15 weeks.The hepatotoxicity level was assessed by monitoring the changes in the organ to body; weight ratio, micronutrient level (iron, zinc, copper andselenium), the nutritional status (total carbohydrate, total glucose, total protein, total amino acids, total lipid and total cholesterol), the lipid peroxidation level (reduced glutathione and thiobarbiturate) and theantioxidant enzyme activities (glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, catalase, and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase). A dose-dependent decrease in the organ-to-body ratio was observed. Themicronutrient level in the test groups increase significantly. The total carbohydrate, total glucose, total amino acids and total protein show a significant decrease in the test groups. There is no significantdifference observed in the tissue cholesterol at both dosages under investigation. Lipid peroxidation was increased in the test groups as indicated by a significant increase in the thiobarbiturate level and asignificant decrease in the reduced glutathione level.     15 male rats were grouped and administered crude ethanolic extracts of Garcinia cambogia seeds to test the effects on the histology of the testis and sperm counts. Group A served as the control while Groups B and C received 100 and 200 mg/kg body weight of extracts, respectively. The administration was done orally once a day, six days a week for six weeks. The routine histological preparation at the end of administration revealed increase in the interstitial spaces, degeneration of the Ledgid cells anddistortion in the arrangement of the cells of spermatogenic series.     Protective role of aqueous extract of Hibiscus sabdariffa (calyx) against potassium bromate induced tissue damage in wistar rats

    The protective role of aqueous extract of Hibiscus sabdariffa (calyx) against potassium bromate induced tissue damage was investigated in rat tissues (brain, kidney, stomach, spleen, heart and liver). The rats were divided into four groups. Group A was administered with 0.25 M sucrose only (base line control), Group B with 60 mg/kg body weight of potassium bromate, and Group C with 250 mg/kg body weight of extracts. Group D was administered 500 mg/kg body weight of extract. Group A and B were used as control groups, while Group C and D were the experimentals. The oral administration of potassium bromate to groups B, C and D were done eight hours before sacrifice. Lipid peroxidation was monitored by colorimetric determination of amino acid, protein and malondialdehyde level in the tissues. The organ-to-body weight ratio was taken as indication for inflammation and necrosis of the tissues investigated. The results of the test groups were statistically (p < 0.05) compared with the base linecontrol and the group B. There was no significant difference in the organ-to-body weight ratio in all the tissues investigated at both doses, when compared with base line control, but showed a significant decrease when compared with group B. The protein level of the tissues investigated showed a similar trend but the stomach shows significant increase in the protein level. This may be due to accumulation of the toxicant inducing protein synthesis. Amino acid level decreased significantly when comparedwith the base-line control and group B. This may be due to the extract ability to reduce proteolysis. Malondialdehyde level in the test groups decreased significantly in a dose dependent manner in all tissues investigated

Here we present ProteomeHD, which documents the response of 10,323 human proteins to 294 biological perturbations, measured by isotope-labelling mass spectrometry. We reveal functional associations between human proteins using the treeClust machine learning algorithm, which we show to improve protein co-regulation analysis due to robust selectivity for close linear relationships. Our co-regulation map identifies a functional context for many uncharacterized proteins, including microproteins that are difficult to study with traditional methods. Co-regulation also captures relationships between proteins which do not physically interact or co-localize. For example, co-regulation of the peroxisomal membrane protein PEX11β with mitochondrial respiration factors led us to discover a novel organelle interface between peroxisomes and mitochondria in mammalian cells.     Kinetics of the reaction of compound III of horseradish peroxidase with hydrogen peroxide and NADPH

    The kinetic study of the reaction of Compound III of horseradish peroxidase with reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) was investigated in phosphate buffer as a function of ionic strength at 25 °C. Two successive reactions involving increase and decrease in absorbance with time were observed. Each reaction was first order with respect to the concentration of horseradish peroxidase. The observed rate constants were ionic strength dependent within the range of 0.06 – 0.30 M. The logarithmic values of the rate constants against the square root of the ionic strength showed that both NADPH and Compound III of horseradish peroxidase are of same ionic charges in the first reaction but different ionic charges in the secondreaction.Key words: Ionic strength, rate constant, horseradish peroxidase, NADPH

    Towards the Development of WellFix: A Mobile-based Multi-Job Platform.

    We envision a community of well-maintained houses through the assistance of service providers (i.e., highly skilled individuals). In social entrepreneurship, it is desirable to empower local highly skilled workers within the community, thereby creating jobs not bound by the corporate environments. Toward this goal, this study determined the design considerations of WellFix -- a mobile-based system that allows posting of a wide range of on-demand services by the customers. An online content-validated survey form was distributed to 282 respondents to determine the initial design considerations of the mobile-based system. It was found that the client mostly needed house cleaning (59%), laundry (50%), carpentry (24%), electrical wiring (23%), and plumbing (15%) services. Respondents also reported that their walls (34%), roofs (33%), electrical outlets (30%), sinks (26%), and faucets (22%) need repairs. It is therefore concluded that the system must be able to handle different job requests and have potential contributions to the community. Future works were also discussed
