    Planet Candidates from K2 Campaigns 5-8 and Follow-Up Optical Spectroscopy

    We present 151 planet candidates orbiting 141 stars from K2 campaigns 5-8 (C5-C8), identified through a systematic search of K2 photometry. In addition, we identify 16 targets as likely eclipsing binaries, based on their light curve morphology. We obtained follow-up optical spectra of 105/141 candidate host stars and 8/16 eclipsing binaries to improve stellar properties and to identify spectroscopic binaries. Importantly, spectroscopy enables measurements of host star radii with ≈\approx10% precision, compared to ≈\approx40% precision when only broadband photometry is available. The improved stellar radii enable improved planet radii. Our curated catalog of planet candidates provides a starting point for future efforts to confirm and characterize K2 discoveries.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal; 17 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables, download source for full table

    Anaplasma phagocytophilum in White-tailed Deer

    We examined the reservoir potential of white-tailed deer for Anaplasma phagocytophilum. Results suggest that white-tailed deer harbor a variant strain not associated with human infection, but contrary to published reports, white-tailed deer are not a reservoir for strains that cause human disease. These results will affect surveillance studies of vector and reservoir populations

    Antibody Therapies for the Treatment of Acute Myeloid Leukemia: Exploring Current and Emerging Therapeutic Targets

    INTRODUCTION: Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is the most common and deadly type of leukemia affecting adults. It is typically managed with rounds of non-targeted chemotherapy followed by hematopoietic stem cell transplants, but this is only possible in patients who can tolerate these harsh treatments and many are elderly and frail. With the identification of novel tumor-specific cell surface receptors, there is great conviction that targeted antibody therapies will soon become available for these patients. AREAS COVERED: In this review, we describe the current landscape of known target receptors for monospecific and bispecific antibody-based therapeutics for AML. Here, we characterize each of the receptors and targeted antibody-based therapeutics in development, illustrating the rational design behind each therapeutic compound. We then discuss the bispecific antibodies in development and how they improve immune surveillance of AML. For each therapeutic, we also summarize the available pre-clinical and clinical data, including data from discontinued trials. EXPERT OPINION: One antibody-based therapeutic has already been approved for AML treatment, the CD33-targeting antibody-drug conjugate, gemtuzumab ozogamicin. Many more are currently in pre-clinical and clinical studies. These antibody-based therapeutics can perform tumor-specific, elaborate cytotoxic functions and there is growing confidence they will soon lead to personalized, safe AML treatment options that induce durable remissions

    60 Validated Planets from K2 Campaigns 5-8

    We present a uniform analysis of 155 candidates from the second year of NASA's K2K2 mission (Campaigns 5-8), yielding 60 statistically validated planets spanning a range of properties, with median values of RpR_p = 2.5 R⊕R_\oplus, PP = 7.1 d, TeqT_\mathrm{eq} = 811 K, and JJ = 11.3 mag. The sample includes 24 planets in 11 multi-planetary systems, as well as 18 false positives, and 77 remaining planet candidates. Of particular interest are 18 planets smaller than 2 R⊕R_\oplus, five orbiting stars brighter than JJ = 10 mag, and a system of four small planets orbiting the solar-type star EPIC 212157262. We compute planetary transit parameters and false positive probabilities using a robust statistical framework and present a complete analysis incorporating the results of an intensive campaign of high resolution imaging and spectroscopic observations. This work brings the K2K2 yield to over 360 planets, and by extrapolation we expect that K2K2 will have discovered ∼\sim600 planets before the expected depletion of its on-board fuel in late 2018.Comment: 33 pages, 13 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in A

    K2-136: A Hyades Binary Star with a Neptune-sized Planet

    We report the discovery of a Neptune-size planet (Rp = 3.0 Re) in the Hyades Cluster. The host star is in a binary system, comprising a K5V star and M7/8V star with a projected separation of 40 AU. The planet orbits the primary star with an orbital period of 17.3 days and a transit duration of 3 hours. The host star is bright (V=11.2, J=9.1) and so may be a good target for precise radial velocity measurements. K2-136A c is the first Neptune-sized planet to be found orbiting in a binary system within an open cluster. The Hyades is the nearest star cluster to the Sun, has an age of 625-750 Myr, and forms one of the fundamental rungs in the distance ladder; understanding the planet population in such a well-studied cluster can help us understand and set constraints on the formation and evolution of planetary systems.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables.
