The Sloan Digital Sky Survey Quasar Lens Search. I. Candidate Selection Algorithm
We present an algorithm for selecting an uniform sample of gravitationally
lensed quasar candidates from low-redshift (0.6<z<2.2) quasars brighter than
i=19.1 that have been spectroscopically identified in the SDSS. Our algorithm
uses morphological and color selections that are intended to identify small-
and large-separation lenses, respectively. Our selection algorithm only relies
on parameters that the SDSS standard image processing pipeline generates,
allowing easy and fast selection of lens candidates. The algorithm has been
tested against simulated SDSS images, which adopt distributions of field and
quasar parameters taken from the real SDSS data as input. Furthermore, we take
differential reddening into account. We find that our selection algorithm is
almost complete down to separations of 1'' and flux ratios of 10^-0.5. The
algorithm selects both double and quadruple lenses. At a separation of 2'',
doubles and quads are selected with similar completeness, and above (below) 2''
the selection of quads is better (worse) than for doubles. Our morphological
selection identifies a non-negligible fraction of single quasars: To remove
these we fit images of candidates with a model of two point sources and reject
those with unusually small image separations and/or large magnitude differences
between the two point sources. We estimate the efficiency of our selection
algorithm to be at least 8% at image separations smaller than 2'', comparable
to that of radio surveys. The efficiency declines as the image separation
increases, because of larger contamination from stars. We also present the
magnification factor of lensed images as a function of the image separation,

Discovery of Four Gravitationally Lensed Quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
We present the discovery of four gravitationally lensed quasars selected from
the spectroscopic quasar catalog of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We describe
imaging and spectroscopic follow-up observations that support the lensing
interpretation of the following four quasars: SDSS J0832+0404 (image separation
\theta=1.98", source redshift z_s=1.115, lens redshift z_l=0.659); SDSS
J1216+3529 (\theta=1.49", z_s=2.012); SDSS J1322+1052 (\theta=2.00",
z_s=1.716); and SDSS J1524+4409 (\theta=1.67", z_s=1.210, z_l=0.320). Each
system has two lensed images. We find that the fainter image component of SDSS
J0832+0404 is significantly redder than the brighter component, perhaps because
of differential reddening by the lensing galaxy. The lens potential of SDSS
J1216+3529 might be complicated by the presence of a secondary galaxy near the

A Simple Likelihood Method for Quasar Target Selection
We present a new method for quasar target selection using photometric fluxes
and a Bayesian probabilistic approach. For our purposes we target quasars using
Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) photometry to a magnitude limit of g=22. The
efficiency and completeness of this technique is measured using the Baryon
Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) data, taken in 2010. This technique was
used for the uniformly selected (CORE) sample of targets in BOSS year one
spectroscopy to be realized in the 9th SDSS data release. When targeting at a
density of 40 objects per sq-deg (the BOSS quasar targeting density) the
efficiency of this technique in recovering z>2.2 quasars is 40%. The
completeness compared to all quasars identified in BOSS data is 65%. This paper

Exploring the benefits and challenges of establishing a DRI-like process for bioactives
Bioactives can be defined as: "Constituents in foods or dietary supplements, other than those needed to meet basic human nutritional needs, which are responsible for changes in health status" (Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, Office of Public Health and Science, Department of Health and Human Services in Fed Reg 69:55821-55822, 2004). Although traditional nutrients, such as vitamins, minerals, protein, essential fatty acids and essential amino acids, have dietary reference intake (DRI) values, there is no such evaluative process for bioactives. For certain classes of bioactives, substantial scientific evidence exists to validate a relationship between their intake and enhanced health conditions or reduced risk of disease. In addition, the study of bioactives and their relationship to disease risk is a growing area of research supported by government, academic institutions, and food and supplement manufacturers. Importantly, consumers are purchasing foods containing bioactives, yet there is no evaluative process in place to let the public know how strong the science is behind the benefits or the quantitative amounts needed to achieve these beneficial health effects. A New Survey for Giant Arcs
We report on the first results of an imaging survey to detect strong
gravitational lensing targeting the richest clusters selected from the
photometric data of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) with follow-up deep
imaging observations from the Wisconsin Indiana Yale NOAO (WIYN) 3.5m telescope
and the University of Hawaii 88-inch telescope (UH88). The clusters are
selected from an area of 8000 deg^2 using the Red Cluster Sequence technique
and span the redshift range 0.1 < z < 0.6, corresponding to a comoving
cosmological volume of ~ 2 Gpc^3. Our imaging survey thus targets a volume more
than an order of magnitude larger than any previous search. A total of 240
clusters were imaged of which 141 had sub-arcsecond image quality. Our survey
has uncovered16 new lensing clusters with definite giant arcs, an additional 12
systems for which the lensing interpretation is very likely, and 9 possible
lenses which contain shorter arclets or candidate arcs which are less certain
and will require further observations to confirm their lensing origin. The
number of new cluster lenses detected in this survey is likely > 30. Among
these new systems are several of the most dramatic examples of strong
gravitational lensing ever discovered with multiple bright arcs at large
angular separation. These will likely become 'poster-child' gravitational
lenses similar to Abell 1689 and CL0024+1654. The new lenses discovered in this
survey will enable future sysetmatic studies of the statistics of strong
lensing and its implications for cosmology and our structure formation

Methane, Manganese, and Helium in Hydrothermal Plumes following Volcanic Eruptions on the East Pacific Rise near 9°500N
As part of a rapid response cruise in May 2006, we surveyed water column hydrothermal plumes and bottom conditions on the East Pacific Rise between 9°46.0\u27N and 9°57.6\u27N, where recent seafloor volcanic activity was suspected. Real-time measurements included temperature, light transmission, and salinity. Samples of the plume waters were analyzed for methane, manganese, helium concentrations, and the δ13C of methane. These data allow us to examine the effects of the 2005–2006 volcanic eruption(s) on plume chemistry. Methane and manganese are sensitive tracers of hydrothermal plumes, and both were present in high concentrations. Methane reached 347 nM in upper plume samples (250 m above seafloor) and exceeded 1085 nM in a near-bottom sample. Mn reached 54 nM in the upper plume and 98 nM in near-bottom samples. The concentrations of methane and Mn were higher than measurements made after a volcanic eruption in the same area in 1991, but the ratio of CH4/Mn, at 6.7, is slightly lower, though still well above the ratios measured in chronic plumes. High concentrations of methane in near-bottom samples were associated with areas of microbial mats and diffuse venting documented in seafloor imagery. The isotopic composition of the methane carbon shows evidence of active microbial oxidation; however, neither the fractionation factor nor the source of the eruption-associated methane can be determined with any certainty. Considerable scatter in the isotopic data is due to diverse sources for the methane as well as fractionation as methane is consumed. One sample at +21% versus Peedee belemnite standard is among the most enriched methane carbon values reported in a hydrothermal plume to date
The Sloan Digital Sky Survey Quasar Lens Search. III. Constraints on Dark Energy from the Third Data Release Quasar Lens Catalog
We present cosmological results from the statistics of lensed quasars in the
Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Quasar Lens Search. By taking proper account of
the selection function, we compute the expected number of quasars lensed by
early-type galaxies and their image separation distribution assuming a flat
universe, which is then compared with 7 lenses found in the SDSS Data Release 3
to derive constraints on dark energy under strictly controlled criteria. For a
cosmological constant model (w=-1) we obtain
\Omega_\Lambda=0.74^{+0.11}_{-0.15}(stat.)^{+0.13}_{-0.06}(syst.). Allowing w
to be a free parameter we find
\Omega_M=0.26^{+0.07}_{-0.06}(stat.)^{+0.03}_{-0.05}(syst.) and
w=-1.1\pm0.6(stat.)^{+0.3}_{-0.5}(syst.) when combined with the constraint from
the measurement of baryon acoustic oscillations in the SDSS luminous red galaxy
sample. Our results are in good agreement with earlier lensing constraints
obtained using radio lenses, and provide additional confirmation of the
presence of dark energy consistent with a cosmological constant, derived

Enhancing the Quality of Data on the Measurement of Income and Wealth
Over the last decade or so, a substantial effort has gone into the design of a series of
methodological investigations aimed at enhancing the quality of survey data on income and
wealth. These investigations have largely been conducted at the Survey Research Center at
the University of Michigan, and have mainly involved two longitudinal surveys: the Health
and Retirement Study (HRS), with a first wave beginning in 1992 and continued thereafter
every other year through 2004; and the Assets and Health Dynamics Among the Oldest Old
(AHEAD) Study, begun in 1993 and continued in 1995 and 1998, then in every other year
through 2006
This paper provides an overview of the main studies and summarizes what has been learned
