An approach to permutation symmetry for the electroweak theory
The form of the leptonic mixing matrix emerging from experiment has, in the
last few years, generated a lot of interest in the so-called tribimaximal type.
This form may be naturally associated with the possibility of a discrete
permutation symmetry () among the three generations. However, trying to
implement this attractive symmetry has resulted in some problems and it seems
to have fallen out of favor. We suggest an approach in which the holds to
first approximation, somewhat in the manner of the old SU(3) flavor symmetry of
the three flavor quark model. It is shown that in the case of the neutrino
sector, a presently large experimentally allowed region can be fairly well
described in this first approximation.
We briefly discuss the nature of the perturbations which are the analogs of
the Gell-Mann Okubo perturbations but confine our attention for the most part
to the invariant model. We postulate that the invariant mass
spectrum consists of non zero masses for the and zero masses for
the other charged fermions but approximately degenerate masses for the three
neutrinos. The mixing matrices are assumed to be trivial for the charged
fermions but of tribimaximal type for the neutrinos in the first approximation.
It is shown that this can be implemented by allowing complex entries for the
mass matrix and spontaneous breakdown of the invariance of the

Confronting the opioid crisis: Practical pain management and strategies: AOA 2018 critical issues symposium
The United States is in the midst of an opioid crisis. Clinicians have been part of the problem because of overprescribing of narcotics for perioperative pain management. Clinicians need to understand the pathophysiology and science of addiction to improve perioperative management of pain for their patients. Multiple modalities for pain management exist that decrease the use of narcotics. Physical strategies, cognitive strategies, and multimodal medication can all provide improved pain relief and decrease the use of narcotics. National medical societies are developing clinical practice guidelines for pain management that incorporate multimodal strategies and multimodal medication. Changes to policy that improve provider education, access to naloxone, and treatment for addiction can decrease narcotic misuse and the risk of addiction
Long term Ultra-Violet Variability of Seyfert galaxies
Flux variability is one of the defining characteristics of Seyfert galaxies,
a class of active galactic nuclei (AGN). Though these variations are observed
over a wide range of wavelengths, results on their flux variability
characteristics in the ultra-violet (UV) band are very limited. We present here
the long term UV flux variability characteristics of a sample of fourteen
Seyfert galaxies using data from the International Ultraviolet Explorer
acquired between 1978 and 1995. We found that all the sources showed flux
variations with no statistically significant difference in the amplitude of UV
flux variation between shorter and longer wavelengths. Also, the flux
variations between different near-UV (NUV, 1850 - 3300 A) and far-UV (FUV, 1150
- 2000 A) passbands in the rest frames of the objects are correlated with no
time lag. The data show indications of (i) a mild negative correlation of UV
variability with bolometric luminosity and (ii) weak positive correlation
between UV variability and black hole mass. At FUV, about 50% of the sources
show a strong correlation between spectral indices and flux variations with a
hardening when brightening behaviour, while for the remaining sources the
correlation is moderate. In NUV, the sources do show a harder when brighter
trend, however, the correlation is either weak or moderate.Comment: Accepted by Journal of Astrophysics and Astronom
Doubly perturbed neutrinos and the mixing parameter
We further study a predictive model for the masses and mixing matrix of three
Majorana neutrinos. At zeroth order the model yielded degenerate neutrinos and
a generalized ``tribimaximal" mixing matrix. At first order the mass
splitting was incorporated and the tribimaximal mixing matrix emerged with
very small corrections but with a zero value for the parameter . In the
present paper a different, assumed weaker, perturbation is included which gives
a non zero value for and further corrections to other quantities.
These corrections are worked out and their consequences discussed under the
simplifying assumption that the conventional CP violation phase vanishes. It is
shown that the existing measurements of the parameter provide strong
bounds on in this model.Comment: 8 page
Single photon production by rephased amplified spontaneous emission
The production of single photons using rephased amplified spontaneous
emission is examined. This process produces single photons on demand with high
efficiency by detecting the spontaneous emission from an atomic ensemble, then
applying a population-inverting pulse to rephase the ensemble and produce a
photon echo of the spontaneous emission events. The theoretical limits on the
efficiency of the production are determined for several variants of the scheme.
For an ensemble of uniform optical density, generating the initial spontaneous
emission and its echo using transitions of different strengths is shown to
produce single photons at 70% efficiency, limited by reabsorption. Tailoring
the spatial and spectral density of the atomic ensemble is then shown to
prevent reabsorption of the rephased photon, resulting in emission efficiency
near unity
Effects of Violent Video Game Exposure on Aggressive Behavior, Aggressive thought Accessibility, and Aggressive Affect among Adults with and without Autism Spectrum Disorder
Recent mass shootings have prompted the idea among some members of the public that exposure to violent video games can have a pronounced effect on individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Empirical evidence for or against this claim currently is absent. To address this issue, adults with and without ASD were assigned to play a violent or nonviolent version of a customized first-person shooter video game, after which responses on three aggression-related outcome variables (aggressive behavior, aggressive thought accessibility, and aggressive affect) were assessed. Results showed strong evidence that adults with ASD are not differentially affected by acute exposure to violent video games compared to typically developing adults. Moreover, model comparisons showed modest evidence against any effect of violent game content whatsoever. Findings from the current experiment suggest that societal concerns over whether violent game exposure has a unique effect on adults with autism are not supported by evidence
Evidence for extended IR emission in NGC2798 and NGC6240
Extended emission at 10 and 20 microns can be used to distinguish starbursts from monsters as the underlying energy source driving the luminous infrared emission in the central regions of galaxies. The spatial extent of the mid infrared emission in the interacting galaxy NCG 2798 and the merger NGC 6240 were investigated. The 10 and 20 micron profiles of the IR source in NGC 2798 are significantly wider than beam profiles measured on a standard star, supporting a starburst interpretation of its IR luminosity. For NGC 6240 there is marginal evidence for an extended 10 micron source, suggesting that a significant fraction of its IR luminosity could be produced by a burst of star formation
Anderson transition of the plasma oscillations of 1D disordered Wigner lattices
We report the existence of a localization-delocalization transition in the
classical plasma modes of a one dimensional Wigner Crystal with a white noise
potential environment at T=0. Finite size scaling analysis reveals a divergence
of the localization length at a critical eigenfrequency. Further scaling
analysis indicates power law behavior of the critical frequency in terms of the
relative interaction strength of the charges. A heuristic argument for this
scaling behavior is consistent with the numerical results. Additionally, we
explore a particular realization of random-bond disorder in a one dimensional
Wigner lattice in which all of the collective modes are observed to be

Rapidly quantifying the relative distention of a human bladder
A device and method was developed to rapidly quantify the relative distention of the bladder of a human subject. An ultrasonic transducer is positioned on the human subject near the bladder. A microprocessor controlled pulser excites the transducer by sending an acoustic wave into the human subject. This wave interacts with the bladder walls and is reflected back to the ultrasonic transducer where it is received, amplified, and processed by the receiver. The resulting signal is digitized by an analog to digital converter, controlled by the microprocessor again, and is stored in data memory. The software in the microprocessor determines the relative distention of the bladder as a function of the propagated ultrasonic energy. Based on programmed scientific measurements and the human subject's past history as contained in program memory, the microprocessor sends out a signal to turn on any or all of the available alarms.
