Ecological Observations Upon the Fresh-Water Sponges in Dallas County, Texas

    Get PDF
Published distributional and ecological data on the fresh-water sponges of Texas are meager. Besides Marcus Old\u27s (1936) report on sponges collected by us the only other published report for this region is a description of Asteromyenia plumosa by Weltner (1895) from McKinney, Collin County, Texas. Dr. Old reported Spongilla fragilis from a small pond 1½ miles west of Dallas, and from Parson\u27s Slough near Seagoville in Dallas County; Trochospongilla horrida from Elm Fork of the Trinity River, Dallas County; Asteromyenia plumosa from White Rock Lake, Dallas; and Ephydatia crateriformis from the East Fork of the Trinity River in Rockwall County. The Southwest presents an environmental situation quite different from that in the northern and eastern sections of the United States. These sectional differences are shown in the physical appearance, growth and gemmule production of fresh-water sponges. We report here data collected by us from 1932 to 1952. A taxonomic key to the six species found near Dallas is also presented. We are indebted to Professor Marcus Old of Ursinus College for verifying or correcting our identifications

Make It Real - Undergraduate Research Opportunities

    Get PDF
Theme one in the Quest for Distinction is for VCU to become a leader among national research universities in providing all students with high quality learning/living experiences focused on inquiry, discovery, and innovation in a global environment. Quest is grounded in a commitment to providing students with a diversity of experiences which are available at a premiere public research university. The goal of this project is to take advantage of the wealth of research resources at the Medical College of Virginia Campus, coordinate cross campus efforts to facilitate the use of these resources and increase faculty participation in mentoring undergraduate research projects

Method for Direct Preparation for 1,2,4-Triazole from Hydrazine and Formamide

    Get PDF
Process for the preparation of 1,2,4-triazole comprises contacting hydrazine or its aqueous solutions with at least about 2.5 moles of formamide at a temperature of 140° to 210° C. and then recovering the resultant 1,2,4- triazole in yields of 92-98% with 94-98% purity. The formamide is maintained in an excess over about the 2.5 molar amount consumed in the reaction with the hydrazine. Recovery steps for isolating the 1,2,4-triazole are disclosed

Infrared Lightcurves of Near Earth Objects

We present lightcurves and derive periods and amplitudes for a subset of 38 near earth objects (NEOs) observed at 4.5 microns with the IRAC camera on the the Spitzer Space Telescope, many of them having no previously reported rotation periods. This subset was chosen from about 1800 IRAC NEO observations as having obvious periodicity and significant amplitude. For objects where the period observed did not sample the full rotational period, we derived lower limits to these parameters based on sinusoidal fits. Lightcurve durations ranged from 42 to 544 minutes, with derived periods from 16 to 400 minutes. We discuss the effects of lightcurve variations on the thermal modeling used to derive diameters and albedos from Spitzer photometry. We find that both diameters and albedos derived from the lightcurve maxima and minima agree with our previously published results, even for extreme objects, showing the conservative nature of the thermal model uncertainties. We also evaluate the NEO rotation rates, sizes, and their cohesive strengths.Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables, to appear in the Astrophysical Journal Supplement Serie
