Analysis of casino table game tipping by Comdex conventioneers

This study analyzed the mean tips earned per table game dealer of a mega-resort casino located on the Las Vegas strip during Comdex, a large annual computer convention located in Las Vegas. Members of the media and gaming authorities have claimed that Comdex conventioneers do not gamble or tip as much as most convention attendees, yet no substantiated and documented explanation has been offered to explain why. This study hypothesized that Comdex conventioneers have the programmer personality, which is low in the personality dimensions of neuroticism and extraversion. Since the amount tipped has been shown to positively correlate with high levels of neuroticism and extraversion, lower levels of tip revenue should be observed if the programmer personality prevails among Comdex conventioneers. However, the results of the investigation failed to find lower mean tips earned per dealer during Comdex over a three year period

Geochemistry, Geothermobarometry and Geochronology of High-Pressure Granulites and Implications for the Exhumation History of Ultrahigh-Pressure Terranes: Dulan, Western China

    Get PDF
The Dulan ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) rocks of the North Qaidam terrane, Western China, represent continental crust that has been subducted ~100 km during continental collision. Adjacent granulites representing burial to ~50 km could either be overprinted eclogites or a separate high-pressure-high-temperature (HP-HT) granulite unit. Overprinted eclogites and HP-HT granulites imply different P-T-t paths for UHP rocks. Metamorphic conditions for the granulites are 750–880 °C and 14–17 kbar. Zircon U-Pb geochronology, REE patterns and Ti-in-zircon thermometry indicate an increase in temperature from ~800 °C (449 Ma) to ~900 °C (418 Ma). This temperature increase could explain the presence of granulite leucosomes and tonalites (419 Ma) interpreted to represent partial melts. The temperature increase coincides with the end of UHP metamorphism and may be related to exhumation of UHP rocks. These granulites represent a separate HP-HT unit from the thickened overriding crust in a continental collision zone, above subducting UHP rocks

Lattice HQET Calculation of the Isgur-Wise Function

We calculate the Isgur-Wise function on the lattice, simulating the light quark with the Wilson action and the heavy quark with a direct lattice implementation of the heavy-quark effective theory. Improved smearing functions produced by a variational technique, MOST, are used to reduce the statistical errors and to minimize excited-state contamination of the ground-state signal. Calculating the required matching factors, we obtain ξ′(1)=−0.64(13)\xi'(1)=-0.64(13) for the slope of the Isgur-Wise function in continuum-HQET in the \barMS scheme at a scale of 4.04.0 GeV.Comment: 3 Pages, LaTeX, Poster at Lattice '9

    Computer-aided design of two-dimensional electric-type hyperthermia applicators using the finite-difference time-domain method

    Get PDF
Journal ArticleA hyperthermia applicator design tool consisting of a finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) technique in combination with a graphical display of electric fields and normalized linear temperature rise is described. This technique calculates, rather than assumes, antenna current distributions; it includes mutual interactions between the body and the applicator, and it calculates driving-point impedance and power delivered to the applicator. Results show that the fundamental limitation of 2-D electric-type applicators is overheating of the fat by normal components of the electric field, which exist because of near fields and capacitive coupling with the muscle. Two factors which contribute to the capacitance are the muscle conductivity and the small antenna size in air. Two examples of applicators designed to avoid fat overheating are described: a 27-MHz segmented dipole for heating large tumors to 7 cm depth, and a 100-MHz dipole for small tumors to 5 cm depth. The first uses a water bolus, and the second uses a water bolus with low-permittivity strips to reduce normal fields at the antenna ends. The results of this study describe fundamental limitations of electric field applicators, and illustrate the use of a powerful applicator design tool that allows rapid evaluation of a wide range of ideas for applicators which would require months and years to test experimentally

    A Study of the Static-Light BBB_B Parameter

    Get PDF
We calculate the BBB_B parameter, relevant for B‾0\overline{B}^0--B0B^0 mixing, from a lattice gauge theory simulation using the static approximation for the heavy quark and the Wilson action for the light quark and gauge fields. Improved sources, produced by an optimized variational technique, {\sc most}, reduce statistical errors and minimize excited-state contamination of the ground-state signal. Renormalization of four-fermion operator coefficients, using the Lepage-Mackenzie procedure for estimating typical momentum scales, is linearized to reduce order αs2\alpha_s^2 uncertainties.Comment: 4 pages (LaTeX), Talk presented at LATTICE96(heavy quarks), Minor numerically-insignificant changes made and reference adde

A Mock Data and Science Challenge for Detecting an Astrophysical Stochastic Gravitational-Wave Background with Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo

The purpose of this mock data and science challenge is to prepare the data analysis and science interpretation for the second generation of gravitational-wave experiments Advanced LIGO-Virgo in the search for a stochastic gravitational-wave background signal of astrophysical origin. Here we present a series of signal and data challenges, with increasing complexity, whose aim is to test the ability of current data analysis pipelines at detecting an astrophysically produced gravitational-wave background, test parameter estimation methods and interpret the results. We introduce the production of these mock data sets that includes a realistic observing scenario data set where we account for different sensitivities of the advanced detectors as they are continuously upgraded toward their design sensitivity. After analysing these with the standard isotropic cross-correlation pipeline we find that we are able to recover the injected gravitational-wave background energy density to within 2σ2\sigma for all of the data sets and present the results from the parameter estimation. The results from this mock data and science challenge show that advanced LIGO and Virgo will be ready and able to make a detection of an astrophysical gravitational-wave background within a few years of operations of the advanced detectors, given a high enough rate of compact binary coalescing events

General Public Awareness of Sources of Radiation in Their Environment

Author Institution: Departments of Agricultural Engineering, School of Natural Resources, Engineering Graphics, and Mechanical Engineering, The Ohio State UniversityA telephone survey (poll) of randomly selected Ohio citizens was conducted to determine their awareness and knowledge of sources of radiation in their environment. During October 1992, 1,450 households were contacted resulting in 879 complete interviews. Nearly half of those Ohio citizens surveyed have heard something about disposal of low-level radioactive waste. Knowledge about radiation exposure and sources was found to be related to general education level. College graduates tend to be slightly more aware of sources and exposure than adults with less than a high school education. Radiation exposure from bricks used in buildings, flying in an airplane, and smoke detectors was identified by fewer than 20% of respondents overall

HUMERAL RETROVERSION, CORRECTED RANGE-OF-MOTION, AND FAST SCORES IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL PITCHERS

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between shoulder rotational range of motion, accounting for humeral retroversion (HR) and the Functional Arm Scale for Throwers (FAST). Nineteen male NCAA Division I collegiate baseball pitchers participated in the study and completed a modified FAST form. Humeral retroversion was measured and total rotational range of motion, corrected internal rotational range of motion, and corrected external rotational range of motion were calculated. No relationships were found between rotational ROM and the FAST score. The findings suggest further research needs to be performed on patient reported outcomes specific to changes in rotational ROM

    Endomorphisms of quantized Weyl algebras

Belov-Kanel and Kontsevich conjectured that the group of automorphisms of the n'th Weyl algebra and the group of polynomial symplectomorphisms of C^2 are canonically isomorphic. We discuss how this conjecture can be approached by means of (second) quantized Weyl algebras at roots of unity
