Comparison of clinical and environmental isolates of Legionella pneumophila obtained in the UK over 19 years
ABSTRACTBetween January 1980 and December 1998, 3458 cases of Legionnaires’ disease were reported to the national surveillance scheme in England and Wales. Of these, 463 (13.4%) were reported as proven by culture and isolation of Legionella spp., with 96.3% being Legionella pneumophila. Serogroup (Sgp), monoclonal antibody (mAb) subgrouping and restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis data were obtained for 321 (69.3%) of these, of which 284 were classified as being unrelated to any other isolate in the study. Typing data were also available for 117 unrelated environmental isolates of L. pneumophila obtained from England and Wales, giving a total of 401 unrelated isolates in the study. Of the clinical isolates, 88.0% were Sgp1, compared with only 42.7% of environmental isolates (p <0.001); 79.6% of clinical isolates were subgrouped as mAb2+, compared with only 12.8% of environmental isolates (p <0.001). RFLP typing identified 67 types among the 401 isolates, with clinical isolates showing significantly less diversity than environmental isolates (index of diversity (IOD) 0.944 vs. 0.958; p <0.05), with three RFLP types (1, 5 and 14) accounting for 40.0% of all clinical isolates. Combining the phenotypic and genotypic data resulted in 173 distinct phenons, with clinical isolates showing significantly less diversity than environmental isolates (IOD 0.964 vs. 0.996; p <0.01). Three phenons accounted for 30% of all clinical isolates. These data strongly suggest that some strains of L. pneumophila are more likely to cause human infection than would be expected from their distribution in the environment

Supercritical biharmonic equations with power-type nonlinearity
The biharmonic supercritical equation , where and
, is studied in the whole space as well as in a
modified form with as right-hand-side with an additional
eigenvalue parameter in the unit ball, in the latter case together
with Dirichlet boundary conditions. As for entire regular radial solutions we
prove oscillatory behaviour around the explicitly known radial {\it singular}
solution, provided , where
is a further critical exponent, which was introduced in a recent work by
Gazzola and the second author. The third author proved already that these
oscillations do not occur in the complementing case, where .
Concerning the Dirichlet problem we prove existence of at least one singular
solution with corresponding eigenvalue parameter. Moreover, for the extremal
solution in the bifurcation diagram for this nonlinear biharmonic eigenvalue

Coulomb correlations effects on localized charge relaxation in the coupled quantum dots
We analyzed localized charge time evolution in the system of two interacting
quantum dots (QD) (artificial molecule) coupled with the continuous spectrum
states. We demonstrated that Coulomb interaction modifies relaxation rates and
is responsible for non-monotonic time evolution of the localized charge. We
suggested new mechanism of this non-monotonic charge time evolution connected
with charge redistribution between different relaxation channels in each QD.Comment: 10 pages, 10 figure
Glueball production in radiative J/psi, Upsilon decays
Using a bound-state model of weakly bound gluons for glueballs made of two
gluons and a natural generalization of the perturbative QCD formalism for
exclusive hadronic processes, we present results for glueball production in
radiative J/psi, Upsilon decays into several possible glueball states,
including L \not= 0 ones. We perform a detailed phenomenological analysis,
presenting results for the more favored experimental candidates and for decay

Scaled limit and rate of convergence for the largest eigenvalue from the generalized Cauchy random matrix ensemble
In this paper, we are interested in the asymptotic properties for the largest
eigenvalue of the Hermitian random matrix ensemble, called the Generalized
Cauchy ensemble , whose eigenvalues PDF is given by

results by Borodin and Olshanski \cite{Borodin-Olshanski}, we first prove that
for this ensemble, the largest eigenvalue divided by converges in law to
some probability distribution for all such that . Using
results by Forrester and Witte \cite{Forrester-Witte2} on the distribution of
the largest eigenvalue for fixed , we also express the limiting probability
distribution in terms of some non-linear second order differential equation.
Eventually, we show that the convergence of the probability distribution
function of the re-scaled largest eigenvalue to the limiting one is at least of

Habitable Zones of Host Stars During the Post-MS Phase
A star will become brighter and brighter with stellar evolution, and the
distance of its habitable zone will become farther and farther. Some planets
outside the habitable zone of a host star during the main sequence phase may
enter the habitable zone of the host star during other evolutionary phases. A
terrestrial planet within the habitable zone of its host star is generally
thought to be suited to life existence. Furthermore, a rocky moon around a
giant planet may be also suited to life survive, provided that the planet-moon
system is within the habitable zone of its host star. Using Eggleton's code and
the boundary flux of habitable zone, we calculate the habitable zone of our
Solar after the main sequence phase. It is found that Mars' orbit and Jupiter's
orbit will enter the habitable zone of Solar during the subgiant branch phase
and the red giant branch phase, respectively. And the orbit of Saturn will
enter the habitable zone of Solar during the He-burning phase for about 137
million years. Life is unlikely at any time on Saturn, as it is a giant gaseous
planet. However, Titan, the rocky moon of Saturn, may be suitable for
biological evolution and become another Earth during that time. For low-mass
stars, there are similar habitable zones during the He-burning phase as our
Solar, because there are similar core masses and luminosities for these stars

Political Radicalization as a Communication Process
Based on data taken from 412 adult education students in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, this research attempts to show that attitudes toward French Canadian Separatism by the sample members can be accounted for by differentiaf communication processes. Results show that attitudes held by sample members are well explained (R2 = .64) by a weighted average of the information they received from interpersonal and media sources.
