Background: The identification of new prognostic markers for prostate cancer is highly warranted, since it is difficult to identify patients requiring curative treatment. Data from both experimental models and clinical samples have identified important functions of PDGFRb on pericytes and fibroblasts in the tumor stroma. Methodology/Principal Findings: In this study the prognostic significance of PDGFRb in prostate cancer stroma, and in matched non-malignant tissue, was evaluated with immunohistochemistry. PDGFRb expression was analyzed in normal and tumor stroma from more than 300 prostate cancer patients. High PDGFRb expression in tumor stroma was associated with large tumor size, advanced stage, high Gleason score and high vessel density. Perivascular PDGFRb staining in tumors was also correlated with high Gleason score. Correlations were also observed between PDGFRb status in tumor stroma and nonmalignant stroma. Similarly, high PDGFRb expression in adjacent non-malignant tissue stroma correlated with large tumor size, advanced stage, high Gleason score and proliferation in non-malignant epithelium. Interestingly, high levels of PDGFRb in the stroma of tumor and non-malignant tissue were associated with shorter cancer specific survival in prostate cancer patients. Conclusions/Significance: The study revealed a number of novel associations between stromal PDGFRb expression i

AIM OF DATABASE: The Danish National Lymphoma Registry (LYFO) was established in order to monitor and improve the diagnostic evaluation and the quality of treatment of all lymphoma patients in Denmark. STUDY POPULATION: The LYFO database was established in 1982 as a seminational database including all lymphoma patients referred to the departments of hematology. The database became nationwide on January 1, 2000. MAIN VARIABLES: The main variables include both clinical and paraclinical variables as well as details of treatment and treatment evaluation. Up to four forms are completed for each patient: a primary registration form, a treatment form, a relapse form, and a follow-up form. Variables are used to calculate six result quality indicators (mortality 30 and 180 days after diagnosis, response to first-line treatment, and survival estimates 1, 3, and 5 years after the time of diagnosis), and three process quality indicators (time from diagnosis until the start of treatment, the presence of relevant diagnostic markers, and inclusion rate in clinical protocols). DESCRIPTIVE DATA: Approximately 23,000 patients were registered in the period 1982–2014 with a median age of 65 years (range: 16–100 years) and a male/female ratio of 1.23:1. Patients can be registered with any of 42 different subtypes according to the World Health Organization classifications. CONCLUSION: LYFO is a nationwide database for all lymphoma patients in Denmark and includes detailed information. This information is used for both epidemiological research and clinical follow-up as well as for administrative purposes

Mental Health Among Patients with non-Hodgkin Lymphoma:a Danish Nationwide Study of Psychotropic Drug Use in 8,750Patients and 43,750 Matched Comparators

Psychological distress following cancer diagnosis may lead to mental health complications including depression and anxiety. Non‐Hodgkin lymphomas (NHLs) include indolent and aggressive subtypes for which treatment and prognosis differ widely. Incident use of psychotropic drugs (PDs—antidepressants, antipsychotics, and anxiolytics) and its correlation to lymphoma types can give insights into the psychological distress these patients endure. In this prospective matched cohort study, we used nationwide population‐based registries to investigate the cumulative risk of PD use in NHL patients compared to a sex‐ and age‐matched cohort from the Danish background population. In addition, contact patterns to psychiatric departments and incident intentional self‐harm or completed suicide were explored. In total, 8750 NHL patients and 43 750 matched comparators were included (median age 68; male:female ratio 1.6). Median follow‐up was 7.1 years. Two‐year cumulative risk of PD use was higher in NHL patients (16.4%) as compared to the matched comparators (5.1%, p < .01); patients with aggressive NHL subtypes had the highest incidence. Prescription rates were higher in the first years after diagnosis but approached the rate of the matched population 5 years into survivorship in aggressive NHLs, whereas patients with indolent subtypes continued to be at higher risk. NHL patients had a slightly higher two‐year risk of suicide/intentional self‐harm (0.3%) as compared to the matched comparators (0.2%, p = .01). These results demonstrate that mental health complications among NHL patients are frequent. Routine assessment for symptoms of depression and anxiety should be consider as part of standard follow‐up of NHL patients

Automation of Lacquerline 1 at Totebo AB

The nature and impact of teacher enthusiasm in second language acquisition

    No full text
'Enthusiasm' is claimed to be one of the most important ingredients of effective teaching. It is assumed in the studies that enthusiasm is a well-defined behavioural state which can be recognized and reproduced. However, at closer inspection the term becomes elusive and several ions arise: Is enthusiasm a universally valid category or does it bear cultural and individual differentiation? And does it always lead to good teaching? If not, which aspects are central? This study was designed using a hybrid qualitative method which consisted of a mixture of three different methods: multiple-case studies, in-depth interviews and classroom observations.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceGBUnited Kingdo

Displaced Mason type I fractures of the radial head and neck in adults: A fifteen- to thirty-three-year follow-up study

Undisplaced radial head and neck fractures are consistently described with no long-term deficits. The aim of this study was to evaluate specifically the long-term outcome of displaced Mason type I fractures, which have not previously described. Twenty women and twelve men, with a mean age of 46 years (range, 22-69 years) when they sustained a displaced Mason type I fracture, were reexamined at a mean of 21 years (range, 15-33 years) after injury. All were treated nonoperatively. Twenty-nine individuals had no subjective complaints, whereas three had occasional elbow pain. There was no objective impairment, and none had elbow osteoarthritis, defined as reduced joint space, whereas there was more radiographic degeneration in the formerly fractured elbow than in the uninjured elbow (85% vs 4%, P < .001). We conclude that the long-term results of nonoperatively treated displaced Mason type I fractures of the radial head and neck are predominantly favorable

Fracture of the radial head and neck of Mason types II and III during growth: a 14-25 year follow-up

Twenty-four individuals, who were 16 years of age or younger when they sustained a fracture of the radial head or neck, were examined at a mean of 19 years (range 14-25 years) after injury. The 12 girls and 12 boys were a mean age of 11 years (range 5-16 years) when the fracture was sustained. Two were excluded due to late resection of the radial head following persisting pain. The fractures, which were of Mason type II in 19 and type III in three cases, were treated by mobilization in eight cases, plaster in eight, open reduction and internal fixation in three and closed reduction and plaster in three. At the follow-up examination, 19 (86%) had no complaints, while three (14%) had occasional pain. Flexion was decreased in the formerly injured compared with the uninjured elbow (139 + 8degrees versus 142+/-5degrees; P<0.05). None had developed elbow osteoarthritis. Isolated, closed fracture of the radial head and neck during growth has a favourable, long-term outcome

Displaced fractures of the neck of the radius in adults - An excellent long-term outcome

    No full text
We have reviewed 20 women and three men aged 22 to 73 years, who had sustained a Mason type-lib fracture of the neck of the radius 14 to 25 years earlier. There were 19 patients with displacement of the fractures of 2 mm to 4 mm, of whom 13 had been subjected to early mobilisation and six had been treated in plaster for one to four weeks. Of four patients with displacement of 4 mm to 8 mm, three had undergone excision and one an open reduction of the head of radius. A total of 21 patients had no subjective complaints at follow-up, but two had slight impairment and occasional elbow pain. The mean range of movement and strength of the elbow were not impaired. The elbows had a higher prevalence of degenerative changes than the opposite side, but no greater reduction of joint space. Mason type-lib fractures have an excellent long-term outcome if operation is undertaken when the displacement of the fracture exceeds 4 mm
