Intracerebral haemorrhage in a dog with steroid-responsive meningitis arteritis

    Get PDF
A one-year and six-month-old female neutered Boxer dog was presented with a four-day history of pyrexia, lethargy and neck pain. An intracerebral haemorrhage and a mediastinal mass were identified. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis revealed severe neutrophilic pleocytosis, and steroid-responsive meningitis arteritis (SRMA) was suspected. A significant improvement was observed with immunosuppressive steroid therapy and subsequent imaging revealed a reduction in size of the intracerebral haemorrhage and disappearance of the mediastinal mass. SRMA is a systemic disease with potential involvement of multiple organs. Intracerebral haemorrhage can occur secondary to SRMA and can have a successful outcome

Distributed multivariate regression with unknown noise covariance in the presence of outliers: an MDL approach

    Get PDF
We consider the problem of estimating the coefficients in a multivariable linear model by means of a wireless sensor network which may be affected by anomalous measurements. The noise covariance matrices at the different sensors are assumed unknown. Treating outlying samples, and their support, as additional nuisance parameters, the Maximum Likelihood estimate is investigated, with the number of outliers being estimated according to the Minimum Description Length principle. A distributed implementation based on iterative consensus techniques is then proposed, and it is shown effective for managing outliers in the data.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Generic Battery Model based on a Parametric Implementation

Batteries are a common element used in many electronic applications. Therefore, the analysis and simulation of these applications requires a battery model in order to validate the behavior of the whole system. Since batteries are based on different technologies, a modeling approach valid for any technology is a potential good alternative. Since there are similarities among the different technologies, it is possible to address the modeling of batteries as generic energy storage elements with particular differences. This work presents a battery model valid for different technologies based on a parametric implementation

ChatGPT vs State-of-the-Art Models: A Benchmarking Study in Keyphrase Generation Task

Transformer-based language models, including ChatGPT, have demonstrated exceptional performance in various natural language generation tasks. However, there has been limited research evaluating ChatGPT's keyphrase generation ability, which involves identifying informative phrases that accurately reflect a document's content. This study seeks to address this gap by comparing ChatGPT's keyphrase generation performance with state-of-the-art models, while also testing its potential as a solution for two significant challenges in the field: domain adaptation and keyphrase generation from long documents. We conducted experiments on six publicly available datasets from scientific articles and news domains, analyzing performance on both short and long documents. Our results show that ChatGPT outperforms current state-of-the-art models in all tested datasets and environments, generating high-quality keyphrases that adapt well to diverse domains and document lengths

Speaker Diarization Based on Intensity Channel Contribution

    Get PDF
The time delay of arrival (TDOA) between multiple microphones has been used since 2006 as a source of information (localization) to complement the spectral features for speaker diarization. In this paper, we propose a new localization feature, the intensity channel contribution (ICC) based on the relative energy of the signal arriving at each channel compared to the sum of the energy of all the channels. We have demonstrated that by joining the ICC features and the TDOA features, the robustness of the localization features is improved and that the diarization error rate (DER) of the complete system (using localization and spectral features) has been reduced. By using this new localization feature, we have been able to achieve a 5.2% DER relative improvement in our development data, a 3.6% DER relative improvement in the RT07 evaluation data and a 7.9% DER relative improvement in the last year's RT09 evaluation data

Scientific, Educational, and Environmental Considerations Regarding Mine Sites and Geoheritage: A Perspective from SE Spain

    Get PDF
Should abandoned mine sites be eligible for some official protection under the umbrella of geoconservation? Providing they have enough educational and scientific value, the answer is affirmative, and we suggest that they should be granted protection at the level of geoheritage sites. Some may see mining as an environmental disaster, but others, with a more geologically oriented mind, may perceive mining as a blessing. Mining unveils the geology, thus allowing a more comprehensive vision of geological features such as rock units, faults, minerals, etc. We analyze the advantages and disadvantages of abandoned mines and districts as geologic observational sites, through the analysis of two mining districts from SE Spain: Mazarrón and Cartagena–La Unión. We propose that if an abandoned mine site or district has enough geological value, not only the mining site but also the whole geologic block hosting the ore deposits should also be protected. In this respect, the Sierra de Cartagena, hosting the Cartagena– La Unión district, is a valuable geological asset where an important chapter of the Alpine and late Alpine geologic history of SE Spain is written
