    Kernel dimension reduction in regression

    We present a new methodology for sufficient dimension reduction (SDR). Our methodology derives directly from the formulation of SDR in terms of the conditional independence of the covariate XX from the response YY, given the projection of XX on the central subspace [cf. J. Amer. Statist. Assoc. 86 (1991) 316--342 and Regression Graphics (1998) Wiley]. We show that this conditional independence assertion can be characterized in terms of conditional covariance operators on reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces and we show how this characterization leads to an MM-estimator for the central subspace. The resulting estimator is shown to be consistent under weak conditions; in particular, we do not have to impose linearity or ellipticity conditions of the kinds that are generally invoked for SDR methods.     MLI: An API for Distributed Machine Learning

    MLI is an Application Programming Interface designed to address the challenges of building Machine Learn- ing algorithms in a distributed setting based on data-centric computing. Its primary goal is to simplify the development of high-performance, scalable, distributed algorithms. Our initial results show that, relative to existing systems, this interface can be used to build distributed implementations of a wide variety of common Machine Learning algorithms with minimal complexity and highly competitive performance and scalability

    Scalable Syriac Paleography using Interactive Visualization

    Syriac (a dialect of Aramaic) was the primary language spoken in the late ancient Middle East between the second and eighth centuries AD, and continues to be a language of Christian scholarship and liturgy up to the present day. There are approximately 20,000 known surviving Syriac manuscripts. Among early manuscripts, only around 10% include a scribal note that provides information regarding when, where, and by whom a given manuscript was written. For the remaining 90%, close examination of subtle differences in the handwritten script remains the primary tool for determining provenance. Prior to this study, scholars classified early Syriac manuscripts into two divergent script styles: Estrangela and Serto. In this paper, we present a case study of historians’ analysis of this collection of manuscripts supported by visual analytic tools. This approach uncovered major inaccuracies in this dichotomous model, resulting in profound disruption to the dominant understanding of the development of these texts

    Design of Reconfigurable Rim Scattering Reflectarrays for Null Steering in Reflector Antennas

    Reflector antennas are susceptible to interference arriving through its sidelobes. The design of a reconfigurable rim scattering reflectarray which can be retrofitted to existing high gain reflector antennas giving the reflector adaptive null steering capabilities is presented thereby giving the reflector interference mitigation capabilities. The conformal reflectarray, placed along the outer rim of the reflector antenna, contains reconfigurable unit cells (RUC). The states of the RUCs allow the reflectarray to place a null in any direction within the first few sidelobes of the reflector pattern. A 1-bit RUC containing two pin diodes with less than 0.44dB loss at the operating frequency is presented. It is found that the dielectric and switch losses do not significantly affect the overall efficiency of the reflector as they are placed only along the outer rim of the reflector which is weakly illuminated. Two reflectarrays are designed. First, a L-band non-reconfigurable reflectarray based on variable patch size for an 18m prime focus fed parabola is presented. A full-wave simulation of this design serves to validate the design approach. Subsequently, a reflectarray design using RUCs is presented. All necessary formulations for complete reproducibility of results are provided in appendices allowing for follow-on work

    Path Clearance for Emergency Vehicles Through the Use of Vehicle-to-Vehicle Communication

    The study described in this paper evaluated and tested a new strategy to enable emergency response vehicles (EVs) to navigate through congestion at signalized intersections more efficiently. The proposed strategy involves the use of vehicle-to-vehicle communication to send messages to alert vehicles to the approach of the EV and to provide specific instructions on maneuvering to allow the EV to proceed through congested signalized intersections as quickly as possible. This movement is achieved by creation of a split in the vehicle queue in one lane at a critical location to allow the EV to proceed at its desired speed but minimize the disruption to the rest of the traffic. The proposed method uses kinematic wave theory (i.e., shock wave theory) to determine the critical point in the vehicle queue. The proposed method is simulated in a microscopic traffic simulator for evaluation. The results show that this strategy can significantly shorten the travel time for EVs through congested signalized intersections

    Economic Assessment of Food Safety Regulations: The New Approach to Meat and Poultry Inspection

    USDA is now requiring all Federally inspected meat and poultry processing and slaughter plants to implement a new system called Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) to reduce potentially harmful microbial pathogens in the food supply. This report finds that the benefits of the new regulations, which are the medical costs and productivity losses that are prevented when foodborne illnesses are averted, will likely exceed the costs, which include spending by firms on sanitation, temperature control, planning and training, and testing.     Intergalactic Globular Clusters

    We confirm and extend our previous detection of a population of intergalactic globular clusters in Abell 1185, and report the first discovery of an intergalactic globular cluster in the nearby Virgo cluster of galaxies. The numbers, colors and luminosities of these objects can place constraints on their origin, which in turn may yield new insights to the evolution of galaxies in dense environments.Comment: 2 pages, no figures.
