Initial experimental evidence that the ability to choose between items alters attraction to familiar versus novel persons in different ways for men and women
Nonhuman species may respond to novel mates with increased sexual motivation (‘The Coolidge Effect1). In humans, novel technological advances, such as online dating platforms, are thought to result in ‘Choice Overload’2. This may undermine the goal of finding a meaningful relationship3, orienting the user toward novel possible partners versus committing to a partner. Here, we used a paradigm measuring change in attraction to familiar faces (i.e. rated on second viewing4) to investigate Coolidge-like phenomena in humans primed with choice of potential online dating partners. We examined two pre-registered hypotheses (https://osf.io/xs74r/files/). First, whether experimentally priming choice (viewing a slideshow of online dating images) directly reduces the attractiveness of familiar preferred sex faces compared to our control condition. Second, whether the predicted effect is stronger for men than women given the role of the Coolidge effect in male sexual motivation5.<br/

Mass of highly magnetized white dwarfs exceeding the Chandrasekhar limit: An analytical view
In recent years a number of white dwarfs has been observed with very high
surface magnetic fields. We can expect that the magnetic field in the core of
these stars would be much higher (~ 10^{14} G). In this paper, we analytically
study the effect of high magnetic field on relativistic cold electron, and
hence its effect on the stability and the mass-radius relation of a magnetic
white dwarf. In strong magnetic fields, the equation of state of the Fermi gas
is modified and Landau quantization comes into play. For relatively very high
magnetic fields (with respect to the energy density of matter) the number of
Landau levels is restricted to one or two. We analyse the equation of states
for magnetized electron degenerate gas analytically and attempt to understand
the conditions in which transitions from the zero-th Landau level to first
Landau level occur. We also find the effect of the strong magnetic field on the
star collapsing to a white dwarf, and the mass-radius relation of the resulting
star. We obtain an interesting theoretical result that it is possible to have
white dwarfs with mass more than the mass set by Chandrasekhar limit.Comment: 18 pages including 3 figures; to appear in Modern Physics Letters

QUASAT: An orbiting very long baseline interferometer program using large space antenna systems
QUASAT, which stands for QUASAR SATELLITE, is the name given to a new mission being studied by NASA. The QUASAT mission concept involves a free flying Earth orbiting large radio telescope, which will observe astronomical radio sources simultaneously with ground radio telescopes. The primary goal of QUASAT is to provide a system capable of collecting radio frequency data which will lead to a better understanding of extremely high energy events taking place in a variety of celestial objects including quasars, galactic nuclei, interstellar masers, radio stars and pulsars. QUASAT's unique scientific contribution will be the increased resolution in the emission brightness profile maps of the celestial objects
Localized gap soliton trains of Bose-Einstein condensates in an optical lattice
We develop a systematic analytical approach to study the linear and nonlinear
solitary excitations of quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates trapped
in an optical lattice. For the linear case, the Bloch wave in the energy
band is a linear superposition of Mathieu's functions and ;
and the Bloch wave in the band gap is a linear superposition of
and . For the nonlinear case, only solitons inside the band gaps are
likely to be generated and there are two types of solitons -- fundamental
solitons (which is a localized and stable state) and sub-fundamental solitons
(which is a lacalized but unstable state). In addition, we find that the
pinning position and the amplitude of the fundamental soliton in the lattice
can be controlled by adjusting both the lattice depth and spacing. Our
numerical results on fundamental solitons are in quantitative agreement with
those of the experimental observation [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf92}, 230401
(2004)]. Furthermore, we predict that a localized gap soliton train consisting
of several fundamental solitons can be realized by increasing the length of the

Discrimination, Coping, and Depression among Black Men Who Have Sex with Men
Black men who have sex with men (BMSM) have elevated risk for depression compared to the general population. BMSM’s capacity to cope with these experiences is not well understood. Increased understanding of how multiple forms of discrimination contribute to depression and how BMSM cope with discrimination can better inform interventions. Data come from 3,510 BMSM who attended Black Pride events in six U.S. cities from 2015-2017. Participants completed a health survey that ascertained their psychosocial health and resiliency profiles. Using multivariable logistic regression models, we tested the associations between type-specific discrimination (race, sexuality, HIV status) and depression. We then conducted sub-analyses to determine if coping attenuated the association between type-specific discrimination and depression. Our findings indicated that increased odds of depression among BMSM were associated with discrimination based on race (aOR=1.38, 95% CI = 1.08-1.76), sexual orientation (aOR=1.32, 95% CI = 1.01-1.72), and HIV status (aOR=1.53, 95% CI = 1.08-2.17). Sub-analyses indicated coping had inconsistent moderation effects between type-specific discrimination and depression. Our findings demonstrate that impact of various forms of discrimination on BMSM’s mental health and the mitigating role of coping. Interventions should seek to address depression by reducing experiences of discrimination and building coping resiliency
Quantum logic as superbraids of entangled qubit world lines
Presented is a topological representation of quantum logic that views
entangled qubit spacetime histories (or qubit world lines) as a generalized
braid, referred to as a superbraid. The crossing of world lines is purely
quantum in nature, most conveniently expressed analytically with
ladder-operator-based quantum gates. At a crossing, independent world lines can
become entangled. Complicated superbraids are systematically reduced by
recursively applying novel quantum skein relations. If the superbraid is closed
(e.g. representing quantum circuits with closed-loop feedback, quantum lattice
gas algorithms, loop or vacuum diagrams in quantum field theory), then one can
decompose the resulting superlink into an entangled superposition of classical
links. In turn, for each member link, one can compute a link invariant, e.g.
the Jones polynomial. Thus, a superlink possesses a unique link invariant
expressed as an entangled superposition of classical link invariants.Comment: 4 page

The need to assess the prototype itself arises from the use of prototyping to demonstrate the feasibility of a design or development stategy. The assessment procedure can also be of use in deciding whether to evolve a prototype into a complete system.
