    New decoding scheme for LDPC codes based on simple product code structure

    In this paper, a new decoding scheme for low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes using the concept of simple product code structure is proposed based on combining two independently received soft-decision data for the same codeword. LDPC codes act as horizontal codes of the product codes and simple algebraic codes are used as vertical codes to help decoding of the LDPC codes. The decoding capability of the proposed decoding scheme is defined and analyzed using the paritycheck matrices of vertical codes and especially the combined-decodability is derived for the case of single parity-check (SPC) and Hamming codes being used as vertical codes. It is also shown that the proposed decoding scheme achieves much better error-correcting capability in high signal to noise ratio (SNR) region with low additional decoding complexity, compared with a conventional decoding scheme.Comment: This work has been submitted to the IEEE for possible publication.     Metastable hard-axis polar state of a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate under a magnetic field gradient

    We investigate the stability of a hard-axis polar state in a spin-1 antiferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensate under a magnetic field gradient, where the easy-plane spin anisotropy is controlled by a negative quadratic Zeeman energy q<0q<0. In a uniform magnetic field, the axial polar state is dynamically unstable and relaxes into the planar polar ground state. However, under a field gradient BB', the excited spin state becomes metastable down to a certain threshold qthq_{th} and as qq decreases below qthq_{th}, its intrinsic dynamical instability is rapidly recalled. The incipient spin excitations in the relaxation dynamics appear with stripe structures, indicating the rotational symmetry breaking by the field gradient. We measure the dependences of qthq_{th} on BB' and the sample size, and we find that qthq_{th} is highly sensitive to the field gradient in the vicinity of B=0B'=0, exhibiting power-law behavior of qthBα|q_{th}|\propto B'^{\alpha} with α0.5\alpha \sim 0.5. Our results demonstrate the significance of the field gradient effect in the quantum critical dynamics of spinor condensates.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figure

    Crossover from weak to strong quench in a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate

    We investigate the early-time dynamics of a quasi-two-dimensional spin-1 antiferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensate after a sudden quench from the easy-plane to the easy-axis polar phase. The postquench dynamics shows a crossover behavior as the quench strength (q) over tilde is increased, where (q) over tilde is defined as the ratio of the initial excitation energy per particle to the characteristic spin interaction energy. For a weak quench of (q) over tilde , the length scale of the initial spin excitations decreases, and we demonstrate that the long-wavelength instability is strongly suppressed for high (q) over tilde > 2. The observed crossover behavior is found to be consistent with the Bogoliubov description of the dynamic instability of the initial spinor condensate. ©2020 American Physical Society11sciescopu

    A Score-Based Evaluation Model for Rehabilitation of Existing Pumped Storage Hydropower Plant Construction

    As the proportion of new and renewable energy increases, power control demands are becoming more frequent due to variability in power generation. As a complementary means against this, the pumped storage hydropower plants (PSHP) are attracting attention as energy storage systems (ESS), but it has high construction costs. Therefore, this study aims to improve the economic feasibility by developing the evaluation model of the existing infrastructure into an upper/lower dam suitable for PSHP. The concept of upper dam capacity is newly defined, and the evaluation index is constructed using normalization. A new evaluation system is presented for five factors: environment, stability, energy, capacity, and economy. Finally, it is tested in the pilot area in Korea. Several candidates, including the PSHP in operation, are found to have been distributed with higher scores. These results will help to satisfy the selection of candidates during the preliminary feasibility study phase, and programming them will enable more accurate and rapid assessment

    Information Assurance in Federated Identity Management: Experimentations and Issues

    Abstract. Identity management has been recently considered to be a viable solution for simplifying user management across enterprise appli-cations. When users interact with services on the Internet, they often tailor the services in some way for their personal use through their per-sonalized accounts and preferences. The network identity of each user is the global set of such attributes constituting the various accounts. In this paper, we investigate two well-known federated identity management (FIM) solutions, Microsoft Passport and Liberty Alliance, attempting to identify information assurance (IA) requirements in FIM. In particular, this paper focuses on principal IA requirements for Web Services that plays an integral role in enriching identity federation and management. We also discuss our experimental analysis of those models.

    Exploring valid reference genes for gene expression studies in Brachypodium distachyon by real-time PCR

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The wild grass species <it>Brachypodium distachyon </it>(Brachypodium hereafter) is emerging as a new model system for grass crop genomics research and biofuel grass biology. A draft nuclear genome sequence is expected to be publicly available in the near future; an explosion of gene expression studies will undoubtedly follow. Therefore, stable reference genes are necessary to normalize the gene expression data.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A systematic exploration of suitable reference genes in Brachypodium is presented here. Nine reference gene candidates were chosen, and their gene sequences were obtained from the Brachypodium expressed sequence tag (EST) databases. Their expression levels were examined by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) using 21 different Brachypodium plant samples, including those from different plant tissues and grown under various growth conditions. Effects of plant growth hormones were also visualized in the assays. The expression stability of the candidate genes was evaluated using two analysis software packages, geNorm and NormFinder. In conclusion, the ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme 18 gene (<it>UBC18</it>) was validated as a suitable reference gene across all the plant samples examined. While the expression of the polyubiquitin genes (<it>Ubi4 </it>and <it>Ubi10</it>) was most stable in different plant tissues and growth hormone-treated plant samples, the expression of the S-adenosylmethionine decarboxylase gene (<it>SamDC</it>) ranked was most stable in plants grown under various environmental stresses.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This study identified the reference genes that are most suitable for normalizing the gene expression data in Brachypodium. These reference genes will be particularly useful when stress-responsive genes are analyzed in order to produce transgenic plants that exhibit enhanced stress resistance.</p
