Simple scheme for expanding a polarization-entangled W state by adding one photon
We propose a simple scheme for expanding a polarization-entangled W state. By
mixing a single photon and one of the photons in an n-photon W state at a
polarization-dependent beam splitter (PDBS), we can obtain an (n+1)-photon W
state after post-selection. Our scheme also opens the door for generating
n-photon W states using single photons and linear optics.Comment: 3 pages, 2 figure
Photoluminescent characteristics of Ni-catalyzed GaN nanowires
The authors report on time-integrated and time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) of GaN nanowires grown by the Ni-catalyst-assisted vapor-liquid-solid method. From PL spectra of Ni-catalyzed GaN nanowires at 10 K, several PL peaks were observed at 3.472, 3.437, and 3.266 eV, respectively. PL peaks at 3.472 and 3.266 eV are attributed to neutral-donor-bound excitons and donor-acceptor pair, respectively. Furthermore, according to the results from temperature-dependent and time-resolved PL measurements, the origin of the PL peak at 3.437 eV is also discussed. Proteomic analysis of Bifidobacterium longum subsp. infantis reveals the metabolic insight on consumption of prebiotics and host glycans.
Bifidobacterium longum subsp. infantis is a common member of the intestinal microbiota in breast-fed infants and capable of metabolizing human milk oligosaccharides (HMO). To investigate the bacterial response to different prebiotics, we analyzed both cell wall associated and whole cell proteins in B. infantis. Proteins were identified by LC-MS/MS followed by comparative proteomics to deduce the protein localization within the cell. Enzymes involved in the metabolism of lactose, glucose, galactooligosaccharides, fructooligosaccharides and HMO were constitutively expressed exhibiting less than two-fold change regardless of the sugar used. In contrast, enzymes in N-Acetylglucosamine and sucrose catabolism were induced by HMO and fructans, respectively. Galactose-metabolizing enzymes phosphoglucomutase, UDP-glucose 4-epimerase and UTP glucose-1-P uridylytransferase were expressed constitutively, while galactokinase and galactose-1-phosphate uridylyltransferase, increased their expression three fold when HMO and lactose were used as substrates for cell growth. Cell wall-associated proteomics also revealed ATP-dependent sugar transport systems associated with consumption of different prebiotics. In addition, the expression of 16 glycosyl hydrolases revealed the complete metabolic route for each substrate. Mucin, which possesses O-glycans that are structurally similar to HMO did not induced the expression of transport proteins, hydrolysis or sugar metabolic pathway indicating B. infantis do not utilize these glycoconjugates
Tunneling anisotropic magnetoresistance in multilayer-(Co/Pt)/AlOx/Pt structures
We report observations of tunneling anisotropic magnetoresitance (TAMR) in
vertical tunnel devices with a ferromagnetic multilayer-(Co/Pt) electrode and a
non-magnetic Pt counter-electrode separated by an AlOx barrier. In stacks with
the ferromagnetic electrode terminated by a Co film the TAMR magnitude
saturates at 0.15% beyond which it shows only weak dependence on the magnetic
field strength, bias voltage, and temperature. For ferromagnetic electrodes
terminated by two monolayers of Pt we observe order(s) of magnitude enhancement
of the TAMR and a strong dependence on field, temperature and bias. Discussion
of experiments is based on relativistic ab initio calculations of magnetization
orientation dependent densities of states of Co and Co/Pt model systems.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, to be published in Phys. Rev. Let
Generation of two-photon EPR and Wstates
In this paper we present a scheme for generation of two-photon EPR and W
states in the cavity QED context. The scheme requires only one three-level
Rydberg atom and two or three cavities. The atom is sent to interact with
cavities previously prepared in vacuum states, via two-photon process. An
appropriate choice of the interaction times one obtains the mentioned state
with maximized fidelities. These specific times and the values of success
probability and fidelity are discussed.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
A New Era in High-energy Physics
In TeV-scale gravity, scattering of particles with center-of-mass energy of
the order of a few TeV can lead to the creation of nonperturbative, extended,
higher-dimensional gravitational objects: Branes. Neutral or charged, spinning
or spinless, Einsteinian or supersymmetric, low-energy branes could
dramatically change our picture of high-energy physics. Will we create branes
in future particle colliders, observe them from ultra high energy cosmic rays,
and discover them to be dark matter?Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures. Essay submitted on Mar 26, 2002 to the Gravity

Generation of Three-Qubit Entangled W-State by Nonlinear Optical State Truncation
We propose an alternative scheme to generate W state via optical state
truncation using quantum scissors. In particular, these states may be generated
through three-mode optical state truncation in a Kerr nonlinear coupler. The
more general three-qubit state may be also produced if the system is driven by
external classical fields.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figur
Hopping Conductivity of a Nearly-1d Fractal: a Model for Conducting Polymers
We suggest treating a conducting network of oriented polymer chains as an
anisotropic fractal whose dimensionality D=1+\epsilon is close to one.
Percolation on such a fractal is studied within the real space renormalization
group of Migdal and Kadanoff. We find that the threshold value and all the
critical exponents are strongly nonanalytic functions of \epsilon as \epsilon
tends to zero, e.g., the critical exponent of conductivity is \epsilon^{-2}\exp
(-1-1/\epsilon). The distribution function for conductivity of finite samples
at the percolation threshold is established. It is shown that the central body
of the distribution is given by a universal scaling function and only the
low-conductivity tail of distribution remains -dependent. Variable
range hopping conductivity in the polymer network is studied: both DC
conductivity and AC conductivity in the multiple hopping regime are found to
obey a quasi-1d Mott law. The present results are consistent with electrical
properties of poorly conducting polymers.Comment: 27 pages, RevTeX, epsf, 5 .eps figures, to be published in Phys. Rev.
