The study was a single-subject study on the top-elite vaulter in the world. This study was purposed to compare kinematic differences between Yang Hak-Seon vault (Yang-1) and Tsukahara 1260? vault (Yang-2) performed by Yang Hak-Seon. Fourteen high-speed cameras were used to capture a whole body segment motion of Yang-2 vault during the practice session. Yang-1 vault showed faster CM vertical velocity until the vault table takeoff and faster CM horizontal velocity prior to the vault table touchdown. However, the trunk rotation angle and its angular velocity of Yang-2 vault exceeded Yang-1 vault significantly. This might be due to a half turn off the springboard onto the vault table of Yang-2 vault, which resulted in larger initial angular momentum at the vault table touchdown and further increase in angular velocity during the vault table contact

Most neurological disorders that include Parkinsonā€™s disease (PD) as well as other neurological diseases such as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and Huntingtonā€™s disease (HD) have some common abnormalities regarding the movement, vocal, and cognitive behaviors of sufferers. Variations in the manifestation of these types of abnormality help distinguish one disorder from another. In this study, differentiation was performed based on the gait characteristics of patients afflicted by different neurological disorders. In the recent past, many researchers have applied different machine learning and feature selection techniques to the classification of different groups of patients based on common abnormalities. However, in an era of modernization where the focus is on timely low-cost automatization and pattern recognition, such techniques require improvisation to provide high performance. We attempted to improve the performance of such techniques using different feature optimization methods, such as a genetic algorithm (GA) and principal component analysis (PCA), and applying different classification approaches, i.e., linear, nonlinear, and probabilistic classifiers. In this study, gait dynamics data of patients suffering with PD, ALS, and HD were collated from a public database, and a binary classification approach was used by taking PD as one group and adopting ALS+HD as another group. Performance comparison was achieved using different classification techniques that incorporated optimized feature sets obtained from GA and PCA. In comparison with other classifiers using different feature sets, the highest accuracy (97.87%) was obtained using random forest combined with GA-based feature sets. The results provide evidence that could assist medical practitioners in differentiating PD from other neurological diseases using gait characteristics

PURPOSE: To investigate clinicopathological characteristics and outcomes of male breast cancer (MBC). PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the data of 20 MBC patients in comparison with female ductal carcinoma treated at Yonsei University Severance Hospital from July 1985 to May 2007. Clinicopathological features, treatment patterns, and survival were investigated. RESULTS: MBC consists of 0.38% of all breast cancers. The median age was 56 years. The median symptom duration was 10 months. The median tumor size was 1.7 cm, 27.8% showed node metastasis, and 71.4% were estrogen receptor positive. All 20 cancers were arisen from ductal cells. No lobular carcinoma was found. The incidence of stages 0, I, II, and III in patients were 2, 10, 4, and 3, respectively. All patients underwent mastectomy. One with invasive cancer did not receive axillary node dissection and stage was not exactly evaluated. Adjuvant treatments were determined by pathologic parameters and stage. Clinicopathological parameters and survival rates of MBC were comparable to those of female ductal carcinoma. CONCLUSION: The onset age of MBC was 10 years older and symptom duration was longer than in female patients. No difference in outcomes between MBC and female ductal carcinoma suggests that the biology of MBC is not different from that of females. Therefore, education, an appropriate system for early detection, and adequate treatment are necessary for improving outcomes.ope

Production of Reducing Sugars from Laminaria japonica by Subcritical Water Hydrolysis

    Get PDF
AbstractThis study was to investigate the production of reducing sugars in hydrolysates from raw and deoiled Laminaria japonica produced by subcritical water hydrolysis. Deoiled Laminaria japonica was collected by supercritical carbon dioxide (SCO2) extraction process. Experiments were performed in a batch-type reactor with stirring. It investigated that the effects of reaction temperature and acetic acid as catalyst on content of reducing sugar production. The addition of acetic acid led to an increase in content of reducing sugar. But Removal of oil in Laminaria japonica by SCO2 and increasing of temperature led to decrease in content of reducing sugar production. The highest content of reducing sugar was 814.10mg/100g raw dried sample at 200Ā°C, adding of 1% acetic acid as catalyst

Trophic structure of fish assemblages in two offshore islands (Ulleungdo and Dokdo) of Korea revealed using stable isotope analysis

The objective of this study was to characterize the trophic structure of fish assemblages on the coasts of offshore islands and the eastern mainland of the Korean Peninsula. We compared the seasonal variability in the trophic structure of fish assemblages between the coasts of two island sites (Ulleungdo and Dokdo) and one mainland site (Hupo), which are on a similar latitude. We analyzed the stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios (Ī“13C and Ī“15N) of fish assemblages during spring (April) and summer (August) 2021. No temporal differences in the isotope values of fish and basal resources (i.e., suspended particulate organic matter (SPOM)) were found over the sampling period at the Hupo site. In contrast, at the Ulleungdo and Dokdo sites, the fishes and SPOM showed seasonal differences in the Ī“13C and Ī“15N values between the two seasons. In particular, the fish Ī“15N values at the island sites were relatively higher in summer compared to those in spring, suggesting the seasonal variation in the food chains and/or trophic status between consumers and their dietary sources. These regional isotopic variations also result in differences in the seasonal tendencies of the isotopic niche parameters of fish assemblages between the mainland and island coasts. Such differences in the seasonal isotopic patterns of fish assemblages suggest a relatively substantial shift in the dietary resources available to fish consumers on island coasts compared to those on the mainland coast. Overall, our results suggest that fish assemblages in offshore island coasts have distinct seasonal variability in trophic characteristics in response to changing environmental conditions, including basal resources, compared with fish food webs on the mainland coast at similar latitudes

Alpha-tocopherol exerts protective function against the mucotoxicity of particulate matter in amphibian and human goblet cells

Exposure to particulate matter (PM) in ambient air is known to increase the risk of cardiovascular disorders and mortality. The cytotoxicity of PM is mainly due to the abnormal increase of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which damage cellular components such as DNA, RNA, and proteins. The correlation between PM exposure and human disorders, including mortality, is based on long-term exposure. In this study we have investigated acute responses of mucus-secreting goblet cells upon exposure to PM derived from a heavy diesel engine. To this end, we employed the mucociliary epithelium of amphibian embryos and human Calu-3 cells to examine PM mucotoxicity. Our data suggest that acute exposure to PM significantly impairs mucus secretion and results in the accumulation of mucus vesicles in the cytoplasm of goblet cells. RNA-seq analysis revealed that acute responses to PM exposure significantly altered gene expression patterns; however, known regulators of mucus production and the secretory pathway were not significantly altered. Interestingly, pretreatment with alpha-tocopherol nearly recovered the hyposecretion of mucus from both amphibian and human goblet cells. We believe this study demonstrates the mucotoxicity of PM and the protective function of alpha-tocopherol on mucotoxicity caused by acute PM exposure from heavy diesel engines

Nanobubbles and related technologies are expected to be highly utilized in water resource-based industries such as water purification, crops, horticulture, medicine, bio, and sterilization. Ozone, a chemical with high sterilizing power, is known as a natural substance that is reduced to oxygen and water after reacting with pollutants. Ozone water, which is generated by dissolving ozone in water, has been used in various industrial sectors such as medical care, food, and environment. Due to the unstable molecular state of ozone, however, it is difficult to produce, use, and supply ozone at industrial sites in a stable manner. This study proposed a method for constructing a system that can generate high-concentration ozone water in large quantities using low power in real time and maintaining the concentration of the generated ozone water over the long term. Friction tubes (called 'nanotube') played a key role to generate nanobubble ozone water with an increased half-life for virus killing activity. In addition, the safety of ozone water during its spray into the air was explained, and virucidal activity test cases for the influenza A (H1N1/A/PR8) and COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) virus using high-concentration ozone water as well as its technical efficacy were described
