    Are Nonclinical Obsessive-Compulsive Symptoms Associated with Bias Toward Habits?

    In a sample of student volunteers (N=93), we found that obsessive-compulsive symptoms (although not hoarding) were associated with overreliance on stimulus-response habits at the expense of goal-directed control during instrumental responding. Only checking symptoms were associated with bias toward habits after negative affect was controlled for. Further research is warranted to examine if overreliance on habits represents an aberrant learning process that confers risk for obsessive-compulsive psychopathology

    Search Constraint Of Mobile Technology And Channel Choice In E-Commerce

    This study aims to investigate empirical evidence of search constraints of the mobile technology from the theoretical lens of technology affordance. Using a large archival panel dataset encompassing transactions in the PC and mobile channels, we find that information-intensity of products is negatively associated with the choice probability of the mobile channel over the PC channel. However, the negative association is weakened as the user experience in the mobile channel accumulates, suggesting a dynamic relationship between user and technology (i.e., users’ learning or adaptation to technology)

    Computerized Response Inhibition Training For Children With Trichotillomania

    Evidence suggests that trichotillomania is characterized by impairment in response inhibition, which is the ability to suppress pre-potent/dominant but inappropriate responses. This study sought to test the feasibility of computerized response inhibition training for children with trichotillomania. Twenty-two children were randomized to the 8-session response inhibition training (RIT; n = 12) or a waitlisted control (WLT; n = 10). Primary outcomes were assessed by an independent evaluator, using the Clinical Global Impression-Improvement (CGI-I), and the NIMH Trichotillomania Severity (NIMH-TSS) and Impairment scales (NIMH-TIS) at pre, post-training/waiting, and 1-month follow-up. Relative to the WLT group, the RIT group showed a higher response rate (55% vs. 11%) on the CGI-I and a lower level of impairment on the NIMH-TIS, at post-training. Overall symptom reductions rates on the NIMH-TSS were 34% (RIT) vs. 21% (WLT) at post-training. The RIT\u27s therapeutic gains were maintained at 1-month follow-up, as indicated by the CGI-I responder status (= 66%), and a continuing reduction in symptom on the NIMH-TSS. This pattern of findings was also replicated by the 6 waitlisted children who received the same RIT intervention after post-waiting assessment. Results suggest that computerized RIT may be a potentially useful intervention for trichotillomania

    Bayesian Prediction of Pre-Stressed Concrete Bridge Deflection Using Finite Element Analysis

    Vertical deflection has been emphasized as an important safety indicator in the management of railway bridges. Therefore, various standards and studies have suggested physics-based models for predicting the time-dependent deflection of railway bridges. However, these approaches may be limited by model errors caused by uncertainties in various factors, such as material properties, creep coefficient, and temperature. This study proposes a new Bayesian method that employs both a finite element model and actual measurement data. To overcome the limitations of an imperfect finite element model and a shortage of data, Gaussian process regression is introduced and modified to consider both, the finite element analysis results and actual measurement data. In addition, the probabilistic prediction model can be updated whenever additional measurement data is available. In this manner, a probabilistic prediction model, that is customized to a target bridge, can be obtained. The proposed method is applied to a pre-stressed concrete railway bridge in the construction stage in the Republic of Korea, as an example of a bridge for which accurate time-dependent deflection is difficult to predict, and measurement data are insufficient. Probabilistic prediction models are successfully derived by applying the proposed method, and the corresponding prediction results agree with the actual measurements, even though the bridge experienced large downward deflections during the construction stage. In addition, the practical uses of the prediction models are discussed

    Analysis of Skills Requirement for Entry-Level Programmer/Analysts in Fortune 500 Corporations

    This paper presents the most up-to-date skill requirements for programmer/analyst, one of the most demanded entry-level job titles in the Information Systems (IS) field. In the past, several researchers studied job skills for IS professionals, but few have focused especially on programmer/analyst. The authors conducted an extensive empirical study on programmer/analyst skill requirements by collecting and analyzing 837 job ads posted on Fortune 500 corporate websites for three years. The results indicate that the programmer/analysts in the Fortune 500 are expected to fulfill a combination of roles from computer program writers to technical experts as well as businessmen. The results of this study are discussed in terms of their implications for the IS 2002 curriculum model

    Two distinct red giant branch populations in the globular cluster NGC 2419 as tracers of a merger event in the Milky Way

    Recent spectroscopic observations of the outer halo globular cluster (GC) NGC 2419 show that it is unique among GCs, in terms of chemical abundance patterns, and some suggest that it was originated in the nucleus of a dwarf galaxy. Here we show, from the Subaru narrow-band photometry employing a calcium filter, that the red giant-branch (RGB) of this GC is split into two distinct subpopulations. Comparison with spectroscopy has confirmed that the redder RGB stars in the hkhk[=(Cab)(by)-b)-(b-y)] index are enhanced in [Ca/H] by \sim0.2 dex compared to the bluer RGB stars. Our population model further indicates that the calcium-rich second generation stars are also enhanced in helium abundance by a large amount (Δ\DeltaY = 0.19). Our photometry, together with the results for other massive GCs (e.g., ω\omega Cen, M22, and NGC 1851), suggests that the discrete distribution of RGB stars in the hkhk index might be a universal characteristic of this growing group of peculiar GCs. The planned narrow-band calcium photometry for the Local Group dwarf galaxies would help to establish an empirical connection between these GCs and the primordial building blocks in the hierarchical merging paradigm of galaxy formation.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, 1 table, accepted for the publication in ApJ
