Joint space width of the tibiofemoral and of the patellofemoral joint in chronic knee pain with or without radiographic osteoarthritis: a 2-year follow-up
AbstractObjectives: To assess the interval change of the minimal joint space width (MJS) in radiographs of the tibiofemoral (TF) joint and of the patellofemoral (PF) joint with a 2-year follow-up in middle-aged people with longstanding knee pain with or without radiographic osteoarthritis (OA) and to study the precision of the MJS measurements.Design: In the format of a prospective study of early OA the signal knee in 55 people, 28 men and 27 women (aged 41–57 years, median 50), with chronic knee pain at inclusion was examined with a 2-year interval (median 25 months, range 21–30). The MJS of the TF joint was measured using a flexed PA view in weightbearing and the MJS of the PF joint using an axial view in standing. Results: The MJS of the TF joint decreased medially by 0.056±0.44mm (n.s.) and increased laterally by 0.080±0.51mm (n.s.) during the time of observation. In knees with an MJS medially that was less or the same as compared with the lateral compartment, the MJS decreased by 0.14±0.38mm (p=0.038) and in a subgroup of these knees, without osteophytes, the MJS decreased by 0.14±0.27mm (p=0.018). The MJS of the PF joint decreased by 0.019mm (n.s.) during the time of observation. The coefficient of variation for intra- and interobserver MJS measurements of the TF joint was 1.0 and 1.1% medially and 2.3 and 2.7% laterally, and for measurement error 6.9% medially and 4.8% laterally, respectively. The coefficient of variation for intra- and interobserver MJS measurements of the PF joint was 8.1 and 5.8% medially and 7.5 and 10.1% laterally and for the measurement error it was 8.1% medially and 8.5% laterally, respectively. Conclusions: A statistically significant reduction of the MJS was only demonstrated in the medial compartment of the TF joint in those individuals who had an MJS in this compartment which was less or the same as compared with the lateral compartment as well as in a subgroup of these knees without osteophytes. The radiographic examinations and the MJS measurements were reproducible
Stability and electronic structure of the complex KPtCl structure-type hydrides
The stability and bonding of the ternary complex KPtCl structure
hydrides is discussed using first principles density functional calculations.
The cohesion is dominated by ionic contributions, but ligand field effects are
important, and are responsible for the 18-electron rule. Similarities to oxides
are discussed in terms of the electronic structure. However, phonon
calculations for SrRuH also show differences, particularly in the
polarizability of the RuH octahedra. Nevertheless, the yet to be made
compounds PbRuH and BeFeH are possible ferroelectrics. The
electronic structure and magnetic properties of the decomposition product,
FeBe are reported. Implications of the results for H storage are discussed
Dic(9;20)(p13;q11) in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia is related to low cellular resistance to asparaginase, cytarabine and corticosteroids.

Please click on the hyperlink in Additional Links fieldDic(9;20)(p13;q11) was first described as a nonrandom chromosome abnormality in B-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (BCP ALL) in the mid 1990s,1, 2 and 71 dic(9;20)-positive cases have since then been reported.3, 4, 5 Approximately 90% of these cases were children or adolescents, with dic(9;20) occurring in about 2% of childhood BCP ALL.6 The recent review by Forestier et al.5 describes that dic(9;20)-leukaemias are of B-cell precursor immunophenotype, never have a high hyperdiploid modal number, show a female predominance, and have a significant age incidence peak at 3 years. Most patients are allocated to non-standard risk treatment arms due to high WBC (median 24 109/l) and a relatively high frequency of CNS disease or other extra-medullary leukaemia (EML) at diagnosis. The prognostic implications of dic(9;20) are to a large extent unknown. A relatively large proportion of the relapses reported in the literature have been extra-medullary, and post-relapse treatment including block therapy has been successful in several patients, as illustrated by a p-EFS of 0.62 and a predicted overall survival of 0.82 at 5 years for the 24 Nordic cases.
beta-decay study of Cu-77
A beta-decay study of Cu-77 has been performed at the ISOLDE mass separator
with the aim to deduce its beta-decay properties and to obtain spectroscopic
information on Zn-77. Neutron-rich copper isotopes were produced by means of
proton- or neutron-induced fission reactions on U-238. After the production,
Cu-77 was selectively laser ionized, mass separated and sent to different
detection systems where beta-gamma and beta-n coincidence data were collected.
We report on the deduced half-live, decay scheme, and possible spin assignment
of 77Cu
Appearance of vertices of infinite order in a model of random trees
We study an equilibrium statistical mechanical model of tree graphs which are
made up of a linear subgraph (the spine) to which leaves are attached. We prove
that the model has two phases, a generic phase where the spine becomes
infinitely long in the thermodynamic limit and all vertices have finite order
and a condensed phase where the spine is finite with probability one and a
single vertex of infinite order appears in the thermodynamic limit. We
calculate the spectral dimension of the graphs in both phases and prove the
existence of a Gibbs measure. We discuss generalizations of this model and the
relationship with models of nongeneric random trees.Comment: 22 pages, 5 figure
Rvb1p and Rvb2p are essential components of a chromatin remodeling complex that regulates transcription of over 5% of yeast genes
Eukaryotic Rvb1p and Rvb2p are two highly conserved proteins related to the helicase subset of the AAA+ family of ATPases. Conditional mutants in both genes show rapid changes in the transcription of over 5% of yeast genes, with a similar number of genes being repressed and activated. Both Rvb1p and Rvb2p are required for maintaining the induced state of many inducible promoters. ATP binding and hydrolysis by Rvb1p and Rvb2p is individually essential in vivo and the two proteins are associated with each other in a high molecular weight complex that shows ATP-dependent chromatin remodeling activity in vitro. Our findings show that Rvb1p and Rvb2p are essential components of a chromatin remodeling complex and determine genes regulated by the complex
