Improving the geometric fidelity of imaging systems employing sensor arrays

    Get PDF
A sensor assembly to be carried on an aircraft or spacecraft which will travel along an arbitrary flight path, for providing an image of terrain over which the craft travels, is disclosed. The assembly includes a main linear sensor array and a plurality of auxiliary sensor arrays oriented parallel to, and at respectively different distances from, the main array. By comparing the image signals produced by the main sensor array with those produced by each auxiliary array, information relating to variations in velocity of the craft carrying the assembly can be obtained. The signals from each auxiliary array will provide information relating to a respectively different frequency range

Nickel hydrogen common pressure vessel battery development

    Get PDF
Our present design for a common pressure vessel (CPV) battery, a nickel hydrogen battery system to combine all of the cells into a common pressure vessel, uses an open disk which allows the cell to be set into a shallow cavity; subsequent cells are stacked on each other with the total number based on the battery voltage required. This approach not only eliminates the assembly error threat, but also more readily assures equal contact pressure to the heat fin between each cell, which further assures balanced heat transfer. These heat fin dishes with their appropriate cell stacks are held together with tie bars which in turn are connected to the pressure vessel weld rings at each end of the tube

Application of a full potential method for analysis of complex aircraft geometries

    Get PDF
A supersonic potential flow solver was developed to analyze the flow over complex realistic aircraft geometries. Enhancements to the method were made to accommodate regions of subsonic flow, the effect of trailing wakes on other aircraft components, and the modeling/gridding of complete configurations. Validation of the method was demonstrated by comparisons with experimental aerodynamic force and surface pressure measurements. The predicted results are in very good agreement with the experimental data. The bibliography contains additional information on the use of the potential flow code to predict the aerodynamics of high-speed wing/body configurations, waverider concepts, TAV, and the Space Shuttle orbiter package

Effect of inflammatory cytokines and high fat diet on inositol-1,4,5-trisphosphate (IP3) receptors binding protein released with IP3 (IRBIT) expression in intestinal cells

IP3, upon binding to the IP3 receptor (IP3R), causes the release of intracellular calcium from the endoplasmic reticulum, which drives many cellular responses (e.g., cell spreading, exocytosis). In addition to releasing calcium, IP3 also causes the release of IRBIT from the IP3R. Over the past decade, IRBIT has been described as a protein that regulates calcium release, due to interaction with the IP3R, the activity of the Na-HCO3 cotransporter, the cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulator, and the Na/H exchanger (NHE3). Lack of reabsorption of Na+ by NHE3 in the intestine is responsible for diarrhea. Recently it was shown that IRBIT and NHE3 expression was decreased in a mouse model of diabetes, and the loss of NHE3 expression induced diarrhea in this model. Insulin treatment restored IRBIT and NHE3 expression, resulting in a decrease of diarrhea. Besides insulin, very little is known about factors regulating IRBIT expression in intestinal epithelial cells. In this work, we set to study the effect of inflammatory cytokines and high calorie diet on IRBIT expression, due to the fact that diabetes is associated with chronic inflammation and high caloric intake. To test the effect of inflammatory cytokines, we used the human colonic crypt cells T84. Exposing T84 cells to interleukin 13 or tumor necrosis factor alpha for 72 hours decreased IRBIT expression by 36% (P \u3c 0.001, n = 5) and 44% (P \u3c 0.001, n = 3) respectively. Finally, we compared the expression of IRBIT in mice fed with low fat milk (control) versus high milk fat (37%). We found that in the duodenum of 3 mice with a high fat diet, a substantial increase of IRBIT expression compared to the control. Our work is the first to demonstrate that inflammatory cytokines and dietary fat can alter IRBIT expression

    Evaluation: Everyone Has a Role

    Get PDF
Do you ever wonder why the term “evaluation” is such a common word among so many organizations these days? This is due in part to the heightened level of accountability that has moved beyond expectation to obligation. Believing that evaluation focuses solely on a large number of people simply participating in a program is a thing of the past. Most programs are now interested in more meaningful outcomes—not just who showed up, but what did they learn and do as a result of participating
