    Application of a full potential method for analysis of complex aircraft geometries

    A supersonic potential flow solver was developed to analyze the flow over complex realistic aircraft geometries. Enhancements to the method were made to accommodate regions of subsonic flow, the effect of trailing wakes on other aircraft components, and the modeling/gridding of complete configurations. Validation of the method was demonstrated by comparisons with experimental aerodynamic force and surface pressure measurements. The predicted results are in very good agreement with the experimental data. The bibliography contains additional information on the use of the potential flow code to predict the aerodynamics of high-speed wing/body configurations, waverider concepts, TAV, and the Space Shuttle orbiter package

    Adjustable mount for electro-optic transducers in an evacuated cryogenic system

    The invention is an adjustable mount for positioning an electro-optic transducer in an evacuated cryogenic environment. Electro-optic transducers are used in this manner as high sensitivity detectors of gas emission lines of spectroscopic analysis. The mount is made up of an adjusting mechanism and a transducer mount. The adjusting mechanism provided five degrees of freedom, linear adjustments and angular adjustments. The mount allows the use of an internal lens to focus energy on the transducer element thereby improving the efficiency of the detection device. Further, the transducer mount, although attached to the adjusting mechanism, is isolated thermally such that a cryogenic environment can be maintained at the transducer while the adjusting mechanism remains at room temperature. Radiation shields also are incorporated to further reduce heat flow to the transducer location

    A preliminary study of ester oxidation on an aluminum surface using chemiluminescence

    The oxidation characteristics of a pure ester (trimethyolpropane triheptanoate) were studied by using a chemiluminescence technique. Tests were run in a thin-film micro-oxidation apparatus with an aluminum alloy catalyst. Conditions included a pure oxygen atmosphere and a temperature range of 176 to 206 C. Results indicated that oxidation of the ester (containing 10 to the minus 3 power M diphenylanthracene as an intensifier) was accompanied by emission of light. The maximum intensity of light emission (I sub max) was a function of the amount of ester, the concentration of intensifier, and the test temperature. The induction period or the time to reach one-half of maximum intensity (t sub 1/2) was an inverse function of test temperature. Decreases in light emission at the later stages of a test were caused by depletion of the intensifier

    Effective July 1, 1966, Rule 11 of the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure placed a burden on federal judges to personally address the defendant to ascertain whether or not he knowingly, willingly and intelligently waived the constitutional rights and privileges attendant to a trial by jury when such defendant entered a plea of guilty. Adoption of the rule stemmed from a desire to insure fairness and adequacy in accepting a guilty plea when it was realized that a majority of defendants in the federal court pleaded guilty and did not proceed to trial. There are several underlying reasons for the Rule 11 requirement that a defendant be personally addressed by the court when entering a plea of guilty: (1) in order that the plea reflect the defendant’s own choice he must be aware of the charges and consequences of his conviction; (2) it is important that the defendant realize that the court is concerned with preserving his rights and in so doing, impress upon the defendant the court’s fairness; and, (3) a record will be provided which will minimize later claims of error
