Narrow-band noise due to the moving vortex lattice in superconducting niobium
We report measurements of voltage noise due to vortex motion in Niobium, a
conventional low-Tc superconductor. A coherent oscillation leading to narrow
band noise (NBN) is evidenced. Its characteristic frequency is a linear
function of the overcritical transport current in the flux-flow regime, and
hence scales as the main velocity of the vortex flow. The associated length
scale is not the intervortex distance but the width of the sample, indicating
temporal coherence at a large scale. NBN is also observed in the non linear
part of the V(I) at the onset of depinning, in apparent disagreement with a
stochastic creep motion of flux bundles. NBN exists in the peak effect region,
showing that long range temporal correlations are preserved in this regime.Comment: accepted for publication in Phys Rev
Instruction, Identity, and Inclusivity: What can Teacher Preparation Programs Learn from Gay Male Teachers in the South
Abstract: In this article, the author discusses a qualitative research study that examined southern gay male teachers’ beliefs about the intersectionality of sexuality, gender identity, and pedagogy in secondary classrooms. For this discussion, three important themes emerged from the data analysis: instruction, identity, and inclusivity. The study utilized individual unstructured interviews, unstructured focus group interviews, classroom observations with field notes, and a research journal. The findings offer suggestions for teacher preparation programs to consider when preparing teacher candidates for the profession
Parched elastohydrodynamic lubrication: Instrumentation and procedure
A counter rotating bearing rig was designed and constructed to study transient elastohydrodynamic lubrication phenomena. New instrumentation is described and test procedures are documented. Ball and race speed measurement systems and the capacitance (film thickness) measurement system were upgraded. Methods for measuring bearing torque and race temperatures were implemented
A Rapid Prototyping Environment for Wireless Communication Embedded Systems
This paper introduces a rapid prototyping methodology which overcomes important barriers in the design and implementation of digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms and systems on embedded hardware platforms, such as cellular phones. This paper describes rapid prototyping in terms of a simulation/prototype bridge and in terms of appropriate language design. The simulation/prototype bridge combines the strengths of simulation and of prototyping, allowing the designer to develop and evaluate next-generation communications systems, partly in simulation on a host computer and partly as a prototype on embedded hardware. Appropriate language design allows designers to express a communications system as a block diagram, in which each block represents an algorithm specified by a set of equations. Frank Norris, Decadent Humorist: The 1897 Version of The Joyous Miracle
The once-popular Joyous Miracle is now a distinctly minor short story in the canon of Frank Norris. First given separate publication in England and the United States as a Christmas giftbook in 1906, it was then being recycled for its earning potential as a seasonal offering; for it had already appeared as an 1898 Christmas piece in McClure\u27s Magazine under the title Miracle Joyeux. Norris\u27s contemporaries held it in high regard: for example, the New Orleans Times-Democrat found the McClure\u27s version a charming sketch and praised its author for succeeding with a difficult-to-handle theme-difficult because its featured character was the son of God, and therefore a risky venture in fiction. Later, in 1909 when the California journalist Will Irwin wrote his introduction to a collection of Norris\u27s short stories entitled The Third Circle, he ranked it with the title story and The House with the Blinds as among Norris\u27s most impressive early efforts. Since 1909, however, no one has characterized it thus; nonspecialists who teach McTeague and A Deal in Wheat are most likely not even aware of its existence
