    Theoretical and experimental studies of a novel cone-jet sensor

    Modeling of a novel cone-jet sensor using two-dimensional (2-D) finite element analysis was investigated for dimensional measurement. Theoretical and experimental studies demonstrated that a cone-jet sensor supplied with air can be used to accurately measure displacement, and its work range of 1.5 to 4.2 mm is some ten times greater than a simple back-pressure sensor. It is anticipated that this type of sensor will find wide applications in manufacturing industry due to its wider working range, high precision, and other features

    The history of medicine discloses that plant drugs have been used in all parts of the world as folk remedies, for many centuries. Some of these drugs have been accepted for medicinal use by the medical profession while many have been disregarded because it was felt that their use was based more on superstition than on accurate and dependable information collected in regard to their therapeutic effects. The production of penicillin, and its application in use against diseases caused by bacteria and viruses, in 1941, focused the attention of many scientists, interested in plant biology, upon the study of the effects of plant substances on the prevention and cure of diseases caused by bacteria and viruses. Work with plant seeds, juices, stems and roots has been done by many persons in the field. Among these are Lucas and Lewis who worked with the roots of plants; Sanders and Weatherwax, who worked with the juice of plants; Little and Grubaugh who worked with the juice of plants; Cheng, Cheng, Cheng and Tong who worked with solutions of the water chestnut; Rogues who worked with leaves; and Cook who worked with juices from various parts of the pea plant. Unpublished literature, concerned with a study of the inhibitory effects of acorns against bacteria, undertaken by members of the Department of Natural Science, at Prairie View A. & M. College may be used as a basis for formulating a hypothesis that there is a possibility that some species of acorns may contain inhibitory factors

    Distributions generated by perturbation of symmetry with emphasis on a multivariate skew tt distribution

    A fairly general procedure is studied to perturbate a multivariate density satisfying a weak form of multivariate symmetry, and to generate a whole set of non-symmetric densities. The approach is general enough to encompass a number of recent proposals in the literature, variously related to the skew normal distribution. The special case of skew elliptical densities is examined in detail, establishing connections with existing similar work. The final part of the paper specializes further to a form of multivariate skew tt density.     The “Who?” Question in the Hate Speech Debate: Part 1: Consistency, Practical, and Formal Approaches

    This two-part article addresses the “Who?” question in the hate speech debate: namely, which characteristics, social identities or statuses should or should not be treated as protected characteristics within a body of hate speech laws? Using United Kingdom incitement to hatred laws as a focal point, the article outlines and critically appraises five broad approaches to specification. Part 1 deals with consistency specification, which highlights norms of consistency both within incitement to hatred law itself and in relation to other laws, practical specification, which focuses on the ostensible goals or apparent aims of incitement to hatred laws, and formal specification, which looks at the formal qualities of the characteristics themselves and to the different forms of people’s relationships with those characteristics. And Part 2 considers functional specification, which concentrates on the underlying or real functions, purposes or objectives of incitement to hatred laws, and democratic specification, which appeals to democratic procedures as well as to democratic values, norms and principles that speak to the proper scope of incitement to hatred laws. Along the way I shall also critically assess a range of substantive arguments about which particular characteristics should or should not be covered by incitement to hatred laws given the aforementioned approaches. My main conclusion shall be that each of the approaches has its strengths and weakness and that, partly because of this, no single approach is adequate by itself as a tool for specifying the proper scope of incitement to hatred laws, but also, by the same token, no approach should be ruled out entirely. Instead, the best strategy is one that combines together all five approaches in reasonable ways given the law, the characteristic and the context

    Detection of the nearest Jupiter analog in radial velocity and astrometry data

    © 2019 The Author(s) Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of the Royal Astronomical Society.The presence of Jupiter is crucial to the architecture of the Solar System and models underline this to be a generic feature of planetary systems. We find the detection of the difference between the position and motion recorded by the contemporary astrometric satellite Gaia and its precursor Hipparcos can be used to discover Jupiter-like planets. We illustrate how observations of the nearby star ε\varepsilon Indi A giving astrometric and radial velocity data can be used to independently find the orbit of its suspected companion. The radial velocity and astrometric data provide complementary detections which allow for a much stronger solution than either technique would provide individually. We quantify ε\varepsilon Indi A b as the closest Jupiter-like exoplanet with a mass of 3 MJupM_{Jup} on a slightly eccentric orbit with an orbital period of 45 yr. While other long-period exoplanets have been discovered, ε\varepsilon Indi A b provides a well constrained mass and along with the well-studied brown dwarf binary in orbit around ε\varepsilon Indi A means that the system provides a benchmark case for our understanding of the formation of gas giant planets and brown dwarfs.Peer reviewe

    Satellite tracking of offenders and integrated offender management: a local case study

    This article reports findings from an evaluation of a Global Positioning System (GPS) pilot that took place in the Cardiff Integrated Offender Management Unit (IOMU). The evaluation was based primarily upon qualitative interviews with about half of the tracked sample of offenders, plus interviews with key stakeholders from the IOMU, police and courts. The findings revealed a general consensus of positive views from both offenders and practitioners about the experience of GPS tracking. However, these generally positive outcomes were clearly related to the voluntary and relatively targeted nature of the pilot, which would be challenged if/when GPS tracking was introduced more widely

    This historically situated, UK-based review of New Labour’s human rights and mental health policy following the 1998 Human Rights Act (HRA) and 2007 Mental Health Act (MHA), draws on Klug’s identification of three waves of human rights. These occurred around the American and French Revolutions, after World War II, and following the collapse of state communism in 1989, and the article assesses impacts on mental health policy up to and including the New Labour era. It critiques current equality and rights frameworks in mental health and indicates how they might be brought into closer alignment with third wave principles

    Color Difference Makes a Difference: Four Planet Candidates around τ Ceti

    The removal of noise typically correlated in time and wavelength is one of the main challenges for using the radial-velocity (RV) method to detect Earth analogues. We analyze τ Ceti RV data and find robust evidence for wavelength-dependent noise. We find that this noise can be modeled by a combination of moving average models and the so-called "differential radial velocities." We apply this noise model to various RV data sets for τ Ceti, and find four periodic signals at 20.0, 49.3, 160, and 642 days, which we interpret as planets. We identify two new signals with orbital periods of 20.0 and 49.3 days while the other two previously suspected signals around 160 and 600 days are quantified to a higher precision. The 20.0 days candidate is independently detected in Keck data. All planets detected in this work have minimum masses less than 4M⊕ with the two long-period ones located around the inner and outer edges of the habitable zone, respectively. We find that the instrumental noise gives rise to a precision limit of the High Accuracy Radial Velocity Planet Searcher (HARPS) around 0.2 m s−1. We also find correlation between the HARPS data and the central moments of the spectral line profile at around 0.5 m s−1 level, although these central moments may contain both noise and signals. The signals detected in this work have semi-amplitudes as low as 0.3 m s−1, demonstrating the ability of the RV technique to detect relatively weak signals
