Black Hole Spin Evolution
We consider a subset of the physical processes that determine the spin j =
a/M of astrophysical black holes. These include: (1) Initial conditions. Recent
models suggest that the collapse of supermassive stars are likely to produce
black holes with j ~ 0.7. (2) Major mergers. The outcome of a nearly equal mass
black hole-black hole merger is not yet known, but we review the current best
guesses and analytic bounds. (3) Minor mergers. We recover the result of
Blandford & Hughes that accretion of small companions with isotropically
distributed orbital angular momenta results in spindown, with j ~ M^{-7/3}. (4)
Accretion. We present new results from fully relativistic magnetohydrodynamic
accretion simulations. These show that, at least for one sequence of flow
models, spin equilibrium (dj/dt = 0) is reached for j ~ 0.9, far less than the
canonical value 0.998 of Thorne that was derived in the absence of MHD effects.
This equilibrium value may not apply to all accretion flows, particularly thin
disks. Nevertheless, it opens the possibility that black holes that have grown

In vivo hypothalamic regional volumetry across the frontotemporal dementia spectrum
BACKGROUND:
Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is a spectrum of diseases characterised by language, behavioural and motor symptoms. Among the different subcortical regions implicated in the FTD symptomatology, the hypothalamus regulates various bodily functions, including eating behaviours which are commonly present across the FTD spectrum. The pattern of specific hypothalamic involvement across the clinical, pathological, and genetic forms of FTD has yet to be fully investigated, and its possible associations with abnormal eating behaviours have yet to be fully explored.
METHODS:
Using an automated segmentation tool for volumetric T1-weighted MR images, we measured hypothalamic regional volumes in a cohort of 439 patients with FTD (197 behavioural variant FTD [bvFTD]; 7 FTD with associated motor neurone disease [FTD-MND]; 99 semantic variant primary progressive aphasia [svPPA]; 117 non-fluent variant PPA [nfvPPA]; 19 PPA not otherwise specified [PPA-NOS]) and 118 age-matched controls. We compared volumes across the clinical, genetic (29 MAPT, 32 C9orf72, 23 GRN), and pathological diagnoses (61 tauopathy, 40 TDP-43opathy, 4 FUSopathy). We correlated the volumes with presence of abnormal eating behaviours assessed with the revised version of the Cambridge Behavioural Inventory (CBI-R).
RESULTS:
On average, FTD patients showed 14% smaller hypothalamic volumes than controls. The groups with the smallest hypothalamic regions were FTD-MND (20%), MAPT (25%) and FUS (33%), with differences mainly localised in the anterior and posterior regions. The inferior tuberal region was only significantly smaller in tauopathies (MAPT and Pick’s disease) and in TDP-43 type C compared to controls and was the only regions that did not correlate with eating symptoms. PPA-NOS and nfvPPA were the groups with the least frequent eating behaviours and the least hypothalamic involvement.
CONCLUSIONS:
Abnormal hypothalamic volumes are present in all the FTD forms, but different hypothalamic regions might play a different role in the development of abnormal eating behavioural and metabolic symptoms. These findings might therefore help in the identification of different underlying pathological mechanisms, suggesting the potential use of hypothalamic imaging biomarkers and the research of potential therapeutic targets within the hypothalamic neuropeptides

Do community-based active case-finding interventions have indirect impacts on wider TB case detection and determinants of subsequent TB testing behaviour? A systematic review

We investigated the impact of ACF beyond directly diagnosed patients for TB, using routine case-notification rate (CNR) ratios as a measure of indirect effect. We systematically searched for publications 01-Jan-1980 to 13-Apr-2020 reporting on community-based ACF interventions compared to a comparison group, together with review of linked manuscripts reporting knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) outcomes or qualitative data on TB testing behaviour. We calculated CNR ratios of routine case-notifications (i.e. excluding cases identified directly through ACF) and compared proxy behavioural outcomes for both ACF and comparator communities. Full text manuscripts from 988 of 23,883 abstracts were screened for inclusion; 36 were eligible. Of these, 12 reported routine notification rates separately from ACF intervention-attributed rates, and one reported any proxy behavioural outcomes. Two further studies were identified from screening 1121 abstracts for linked KAP/qualitative manuscripts. 8/12 case-notification studies were considered at critical or serious risk of bias. 8/11 non-randomised studies reported bacteriologically-confirmed CNR ratios between 0.47 (95% CI:0.41–0.53) and 0.96 (95% CI:0.94–0.97), with 7/11 reporting all-form CNR ratios between 0.96 (95% CI:0.88–1.05) and 1.09 (95% CI:1.02–1.16). One high-quality randomised-controlled trial reported a ratio of 1.14 (95% CI 0.91–1.43). KAP/qualitative manuscripts provided insufficient evidence to establish the impact of ACF on subsequent TB testing behaviour. ACF interventions with routine CNR ratios >1 suggest an indirect effect on wider TB case-detection, potentially due to impact on subsequent TB testing behaviour through follow-up after a negative ACF test or increased TB knowledge. However, data on this type of impact are rarely collected. Evaluation of routine case-notification, testing and proxy behavioural outcomes in intervention and comparator communities should be included as standard methodology in future ACF campaign study designs.Peer reviewe

Nef-Specific CD8+ T Cell Responses Contribute to HIV-1 Immune Control
Recent studies in the SIV-macaque model of HIV infection suggest that Nef-specific CD8+ T-cell responses may mediate highly effective immune control of viraemia. In HIV infection Nef recognition dominates in acute infection, but in large cohort studies of chronically infected subjects, breadth of T cell responses to Nef has not been correlated with significant viraemic control. Improved disease outcomes have instead been associated with targeting Gag and, in some cases, Pol. However analyses of the breadth of Nef-specific T cell responses have been confounded by the extreme immunogenicity and multiple epitope overlap within the central regions of Nef, making discrimination of distinct responses impossible via IFN-gamma ELISPOT assays. Thus an alternative approach to assess Nef as an immune target is needed. Here, we show in a cohort of >700 individuals with chronic C-clade infection that >50% of HLA-B-selected polymorphisms within Nef are associated with a predicted fitness cost to the virus, and that HLA-B alleles that successfully drive selection within Nef are those linked with lower viral loads. Furthermore, the specific CD8+ T cell epitopes that are restricted by protective HLA Class I alleles correspond substantially to effective SIV-specific epitopes in Nef. Distinguishing such individual HIV-specific responses within Nef requires specific peptide-MHC I tetramers. Overall, these data suggest that CD8+ T cell targeting of certain specific Nef epitopes contributes to HIV suppression. These data suggest that a re-evaluation of the potential use of Nef in HIV T-cell vaccine candidates would be justified
Sympatric Speciation: When Is It Possible in Bacteria?
This study investigated a potential auditory illusion in duration perception induced by rhythmic temporal contexts. Listeners with or without musical training performed a duration discrimination task for a silent period in a rhythmic auditory sequence. The critical temporal interval was presented either within a perceptual group or between two perceptual groups. We report the just-noticeable difference (difference limen, DL) for temporal intervals and the point of subjective equality (PSE) derived from individual psychometric functions based on performance of a two-alternative forced choice task. In musically untrained individuals, equal temporal intervals were perceived as significantly longer when presented between perceptual groups than within a perceptual group (109.25% versus 102.5% of the standard duration). Only the perceived duration of the between-group interval was significantly longer than its objective duration. Musically trained individuals did not show this effect. However, in both musically trained and untrained individuals, the relative difference limens for discriminating the comparison interval from the standard interval were larger in the between-groups condition than in the within-group condition (7.3% vs. 5.6% of the standard duration). Thus, rhythmic grouping affected sensitivity to duration changes in all listeners, with duration differences being harder to detect at boundaries of rhythm groups than within rhythm groups. Our results show for the first time that temporal Gestalt induces auditory duration illusions in typical listeners, but that musical experts are not susceptible to this effect of rhythmic grouping.Ellison Medical FoundationSwiss National Science Foundation (PA00P1_131448/1
Effects of noise on convergent game learning dynamics
We study stochastic effects on the lagging anchor dynamics, a reinforcement
learning algorithm used to learn successful strategies in iterated games, which
is known to converge to Nash points in the absence of noise. The dynamics is
stochastic when players only have limited information about their opponents'
strategic propensities. The effects of this noise are studied analytically in
the case where it is small but finite, and we show that the statistics and
correlation properties of fluctuations can be computed to a high accuracy. We
find that the system can exhibit quasicycles, driven by intrinsic noise. If
players are asymmetric and use different parameters for their learning, a net
payoff advantage can be achieved due to these stochastic oscillations around
