Bridging the gaps in employee colunteering: Why the third sector doesn't always win
Employee Volunteering (EV) schemes represent a cornerstone of many company Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategies, being identified as a classic âwin-winâ situation in which businesses contribute significant resources into local communities while gaining a more skilled and engaged workforce and increased reputational benefits. This article questions the âwin-winâ scenario of EV arguing that existing research has focused predominantly upon the businessâemployee dimension while largely ignoring the role of third sector organizations engaging in these relationships. By focusing more directly on third sector experiences, the article identifies four âgapsâ which place considerable constraints on the reach and impact of EV. It demonstrates the importance of not simply presuming a âwinâ for the third sector and the added value that can be gained from redirecting EV research toward the âbusiness/nonprofit interfaceâ
Sleeping with the enemy? : strategic transformations in business - NGO relationships through stakeholder dialogue
Campaigning activities of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) have increased public awareness and concern regarding the alleged unethical and environmentally damaging practices of many major multinational companies. Companies have responded by developing corporate social responsibility strategies to demonstrate their commitment to both the societies within which they function and to the protection of the natural environment. This has often involved a move towards greater transparency in company practice and a desire to engage with stakeholders, often including many of the campaign organisations that have been at the forefront of the criticisms of their activity. This article examines the ways in which stakeholder dialogue has impacted upon the relationships between NGOs and businesses. In doing so, it contributes to the call for more âstakeholder-focusedâ research in this field (Frooman in Acad Manag Rev 24(2): 191â205, 1999; Steurer in Bus Strategy Environ 15: 15â69 2006). By adopting a stakeholder lens, and focusing more heavily upon the impact on one particular stakeholder community (NGOs) and looking in depth at one form of engagement (stakeholder dialogue), this article examines how experiences of dialogue are strategically transforming interactions between businesses and NGOs. It shows how experiences of stakeholder dialogue have led to transformations in the drivers for engagement, transformations in the processes of engagement and transformations in the terms of engagement. Examining these areas of transformation, the article argues, reveals the interactions at play in framing and shaping the evolving relationships between business and its stakeholders

Influence of Beginning Body Condition Scores on Net Returns From Feeding Cull Cows
The impact of beginning body condition scores on returns from feeding cull cows was investigated in a two year experiment. In each of two culling years, physical performance data and financial data were measured at approximately monthly intervals for culls on pasture versus dry lot. Specifically, data was collected for cows culled in October 2007 and held through April 2008 and for cows culled in October 2008 and held through March 2009. We examine the sensitivity of net returns relative to the choice of body condition score as a sorting trigger for heavy versus thin cows. In this two year study, while a pasture system was generally more profitable than a drylot system, thin cows were typically more profitable than cows with higher BCS, regardless of the feeding system. The importance of the sorting criteria is highlighted in year two. Using the lower BCS criteria for sorting is the only scenario that generates positive net returns, albeit small. 'I'm not Doing It for the Company' -Examining Employee Volunteering Through Employees' Eyes
This article contributes to research on Employee Volunteering (EV) by focusing on the experiences of individuals in order to address the current over-emphasis upon collective organisational outcomes. Drawing on qualitative research with employees and Corporate Social Responsibility managers across seven companies, it demonstrates why employees' experiences are central to understanding the complex mechanisms that link EV with organisational outcomes. The article reveals how both positive and negative organisational outcomes are influenced by the complex relationship between personal motivations and employees' volunteering experiences-within their organisation and within their community-combined with their broader reflexive interpretation of their employing organisation and its values
Electronic Health Record Availability and Anxiety Treatment in Office Based Practices
Objective:
This study compared the probability of receiving anxiety treatment during a physician visit to primary care practices with and without an electronic health record (EHR).
Methods:
The 2007â2010 National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey was used to identify visits for anxiety (N=290). The outcome was receipt of anxiety treatment. The independent variable was the presence of a fully functioning EHR. Logistic regression was used to conduct the analysis.
Results:
Patients who were seen in practices with a fully functioning EHR had lower odds of being offered antianxiety medication (adjusted odds ratio [AOR]=.37, 95% confidence interval [CI]=.15â.90, p=.028), mental health counseling (AOR=.43, CI=.18â1.04, p=.061), and any anxiety treatment (AOR=.40, CI=.15â1.05, p=.062) compared with patients at practices without a fully functioning EHR.
Conclusions:
EHRs may have a negative impact on the delivery of care for anxiety during primary care visits. Future studies should monitor the impact of EHRs on delivery and quality of care
In Jill Abramson\u27s Firing, Was the \u27Glass Cliff\u27 to Blame?
Our research on CEOs in the Fortune 500 finds that women leaders face two significant challenges: the âglass cliffâ and the âsavior effectâ. First, we find that women are more likely than men to be appointed CEO to struggling firms or firms in crisis. This phenomenon is termed the âglass cliffâ because it suggests that when women are appointed to top positions these positions are often precarious or risky. Second, we find that when firms struggle under the leadership of women CEOs, these leaders are likely to be replaced by men. We term this phenomenon the âsavior effectâ because when organizations struggle under the leadership of women, decision makers often revert to more traditional leaders who are perceived to be capable of âsavingâ the organization. Our research finds strong and significant evidence for both the glass cliff and the savior effect for women leaders. Overall, women leaders face greater challenges and are given fewer opportunities to demonstrate their capabilities than their male counterparts.https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/huntsman_news/1185/thumbnail.jp
A comprehensive joint replacement program for total knee arthroplasty: a descriptive study
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a commonly performed surgical procedure in the US. It is important to have a comprehensive inpatient TKA program which maximizes outcomes while minimizing adverse events. The purpose of this study was to describe a TKA program â the Joint Replacement Program (JRP) â and report post-surgical outcomes.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>74 candidates for a primary TKA were enrolled in the JRP. The JRP was designed to minimize complications and optimize patient-centered outcomes using a team approach including the patient, patient's family, and a multidisciplinary team of health professionals. The JRP consisted of a pre-operative class, standard pathways for medical care, comprehensive peri-operative pain management, aggressive physical therapy (PT), and proactive discharge planning. Measures included functional tests, knee range of motion (ROM), and medical record abstraction of patient demographics, length of stay, discharge disposition, and complications over a 6-month follow-up period.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>All patients achieved medical criteria for hospital discharge. The patients achieved the knee flexion ROM goal of 90° (91.7 ± 5.4°), but did not achieve the knee extension ROM goal of 0° (2.4 ± 2.6°). The length of hospital stay was two days for 53% of the patients, with 39% and 7% discharged in three and four days, respectively. All but three patients were discharged home with functional independence. 68% of these received outpatient physical therapy compared with 32% who received home physical therapy immediately after discharge. Two patients (< 3%) had medical complications during the inpatient hospital stay, and 9 patients (12%) had complications during the 6-month follow-up period.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The comprehensive JRP for TKA was associated with satisfactory clinical outcomes, short lengths of stay, a high percentage of patients discharged home with outpatient PT, and minimal complications. This JRP may represent an efficient, effective and safe protocol for providing care after a TKA.</p
