Oral tradition in medieval Welsh poetry : 1100-1600

Very little research has been done in this field, although there is in fact a rich body of evidence for the oral or memorial transmission of Welsh poetry in the later medieval period. As far as composition is concerned there is no direct evidence of poets' practices, but nevertheless it is generally assumed that they would not have had recourse to writing (the earliest definite holograph texts date from the late fifteenth century, and even those are fair copies of poems composed previously). Since almost all the court poetry of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries has survived in a unique text copied about 1300, the opportunity for study of variance in transmission is limited. Not

Two-sided estimates for the Green’s function of fractional evolution equations

    Get PDF
In this thesis, fractional calculus is investigated from a probabilistic point of view. We begin by exploring the current development of generalised fractional integrals and derivatives, before extending these generalisations to higher dimension. We then look at two-sided estimates for the Green’s function associated to various fractional evolution equations, as well as generalised fractional evolutions. The main tools here are generalised operator-valued Mittag-Leffler functions, and in particular their representation as Laplace transforms of the densities of inverse subordinators. Finally we look at boundary value problems involving the generalised multidimensional fractional derivatives of Caputo and Riemann-Liouville type, which are introduced in the first part

Making the most of precious metal nanoparticles in the purification of industrial wastewater by catalytic wet air oxidation

The aim of catalytic wet air oxidation is to use air to remove organic contaminants from wastewater through their complete oxidation, without having to vaporise the water. To date, the widespread exploitation of this process has been held back by the low activity of available catalysts, which means that it has to be operated at above-atmospheric pressure in order to keep the water in the liquid phase at the elevated temperatures required to achieve complete oxidation. Here we present an overview of an ongoing study examining the key requirements of both the active phase and the support material in precious metal catalysts for wet air oxidation, using phenol as the model contaminant. The major outcome to date is that the results reveal a synergy between platinum and hydrophobic support materials, which is not apparent when the active phase is ruthenium

Dominant effect of support wettability on the reaction pathway for Catalytic Wet Air Oxidation over Pt and Ru nano-particle catalysts

Support wettability can play a key role in directing the activation of oxygen during catalytic wet air oxidation over nano-particle catalysts. When the nano-particles are comprised of metallic Pt, the optimum support is hydrophobic, but when they are ionic Ru, a hydrophilic support is more effective. This reversal in support effect is consistent with two distinct surface pathways: one in which gas-phase O2 is directly adsorbed on the Pt0 surface; the other in which dissolved O2 is activated on RuO2 immersed in the contaminated aqueous phase. The known effects of ceria on both catalysts are of secondary importance to support wettabilit
