    Monotectic alloys having aligned spherical particles of rods of the minor component dispersed in a matrix of the major component are prepared by forming a melt containing predetermined amounts of the major and minor components of a chosen monotectic system, providing in the melt a dopant capable of breaking down the liquid solid interface for the chosen alloy, and directionally solidfying the melt at a selected temperature gradient and a selected rate of movement of the liquid-solid interface (growth rate). Shaping of the minor component into spheres or rods and the spacing between them are controlled by the amount of dopant and the temperature gradient and growth rate values.     A technique for multi-species mole fraction measurement in internal combustion engines is described. The technique is based on the spontaneous Raman scattering. It can simultaneously provide the mole fractions of several species of N-2, O-2, H2O, CO2 and fuel. Using the system, simultaneous measurement of air/fuel ratio and burnt residual gas are carried out during the mixture process in a Controlled Auto Ignition (CAI) combustion engine. The accuracy and consistency of the measured results were confirmed by the measured air fuel ratio using an exhaust gas analyzer and independently calculated mole fraction values. Measurement of species mole fractions during combustion process has also been demonstrated. It shows that the SRS can provide valuable data on this process in a CAI combustion engine

    Magnetically pure spinel compound LiV2O4{\rm LiV_2O_4} is a rare dd-electron heavy fermion. Measurements on single crystals are needed to clarify the mechanism for the heavy fermion behavior in the pure material. In addition, it is known that small concentrations (<1< 1 mol%) of magnetic defects in the structure strongly affect the properties, and measurements on single crystals containing magnetic defects would help to understand the latter behaviors. Herein, we report flux growth of LiV2O4{\rm LiV_2O_4} and preliminary measurements to help resolve these questions. The magnetic susceptibility of some as-grown crystals show a Curie-like upturn at low temperatures, showing the presence of magnetic defects within the spinel structure. The magnetic defects could be removed in some of the crystals by annealing them at 700 ∘^\circC\@. A very high specific heat coefficient γ\gamma = 450 mJ/(mol K2{^2}\@) was obtained at a temperature of 1.8 K for a crystal containing a magnetic defect concentration nndefect{\rm_{defect}} = 0.5 mol%.     This document is a progress report of work done in 1985 on the Communications and Control for Electric Power Systems Project at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. These topics are covered: Electric Field Measurement, Fiber Optic Temperature Sensing, and Optical Power transfer. Work was done on the measurement of ac and dc electric fields. A prototype sensor for measuring alternating fields was made using a very simple electroscope approach. An electronic field mill sensor for dc fields was made using a fiber optic readout, so that the entire probe could be operated isolated from ground. There are several instances in which more precise knowledge of the temperature of electrical power apparatus would be useful. This report describes a number of methods whereby the distributed temperature profile can be obtained using a fiber optic sensor. The ability to energize electronics by means of an optical fiber has the advantage that electrical isolation is maintained at low cost. In order to accomplish this, it is necessary to convert the light energy into electrical form by means of photovoltaic cells.     A 1/10-scale model of a proposed hypersonic aircraft with an integrated scramjet was tested. The investigation took place over a Mach number range from 0.2 to 0.7 and an angle of attack range from 2 deg to approximately 17 deg at a sideslip angle of 0 deg.     Superconductivity and Physical Properties of CaPd2Ge2 Single Crystals

    We present the superconducting and normal state properties of CaPd2Ge2 single crystal investigated by magnetic susceptibility \chi, isothermal magnetization M, heat capacity C_p, in-plane electrical resistivity \rho and London penetration depth \lambda versus temperature T and magnetic field H measurements. Bulk superconductivity is inferred from the \rho(T) and C_p(T) data. The \rho(T) data exhibit metallic behavior and undergoes a superconducting transition with T_c onset = 1.98 K and zero resistivity state at T_c 0 = 1.67 K. The \chi(T) reveal the onset of superconductivity at 2.0 K. For T>2.0 K, the \chi(T) and M(H) are weakly anisotropic paramagnetic with \chi_ab > \chi_c. The C_p(T) confirm the bulk superconductivity below T_c = 1.69(3) K. The superconducting state electronic heat capacity is analyzed within the framework of a single-band \alpha-model of BCS superconductivity and various normal and superconducting state parameters are estimated. Within the \alpha-model, the C_p(T) data and the ab plane \lambda(T) data consistently indicate a moderately anisotropic s-wave gap with \Delta(0)/k_B T_c ~ 1.6, somewhat smaller than the BCS value of 1.764. The relationship of the heat capacity jump at T_c and the penetration depth measurement to the anisotropy in the s-wave gap is discussed.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, 2 Tables; Submitted to PR

    Enhanced quasiparticle heat conduction of the multigap superconductor Lu2Fe3Si5

    The thermal transport measurements have been made on the Fe-based superconductor Lu2Fe3Si5 (Tc ~ 6 K) down to a very low temperature Tc/120. The field and temperature dependences of the thermal conductivity confirm the multigap superconductivity with fully opened gaps on the whole Fermi surfaces. In comparison to MgB2 as a typical example of the multigap superconductor in a p-electron system, Lu2Fe3Si5 reveals a remarkably enhanced quasiparticle heat conduction in the mixed state. The results can be interpreted as a consequence of the electronic correlations derived from Fe 3d-electrons.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Automated Mixed Traffic Vehicle (AMTV) technology and safety study

    Technology and safety related to the implementation of an Automated Mixed Traffic Vehicle (AMTV) system are discussed. System concepts and technology status were reviewed and areas where further development is needed are identified. Failure and hazard modes were also analyzed and methods for prevention were suggested. The results presented are intended as a guide for further efforts in AMTV system design and technology development for both near term and long term applications. The AMTV systems discussed include a low speed system, and a hybrid system consisting of low speed sections and high speed sections operating in a semi-guideway. The safety analysis identified hazards that may arise in a properly functioning AMTV system, as well as hardware failure modes. Safety related failure modes were emphasized. A risk assessment was performed in order to create a priority order and significant hazards and failure modes were summarized. Corrective measures were proposed for each hazard
