Fractional Branes and the Entropy of 4D Black Holes

    Get PDF
We reconsider the four dimensional extremal black hole constructed in type IIB string theory as the bound state of D1-branes, D5-branes, momentum, and Kaluza-Klein monopoles. Specifically, we examine the case of an arbitrary number of monopoles. Consequently, the weak coupling calculation of the microscopic entropy requires a study of the D1-D5 system on an ALE space. We find that the complete expression for the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy is obtained by taking into account the massless open strings stretched between the fractional D-branes which arise in the orbifold limit of the ALE space. The black hole sector therefore arises as a mixed Higgs-Coulomb branch of an effective 1+1 dimensional gauge theory.Comment: 12 pages. 1 figure. v2: References adde

Simulation of Thematic Mapper performance as a function of sensor scanning parameters

The investigation and results of the Thematic Mapper Instrument Performance Study are described. The Thematic Mapper is the advanced multispectral scanner initially planned for the Earth Observation Satellite and now planned for LANDSAT D. The use of existing digital airborne scanner data obtained with the Modular Multispectral Scanner (M2S) at Bendix provided an opportunity to simulate the effects of variation of design parameters of the Thematic Mapper. Analysis and processing of this data on the Bendix Multispectral Data Analysis System were used to empirically determine categorization performance on data generated with variations of the sampling period and scan overlap parameters of the Thematic Mapper. The Bendix M2S data, with a 2.5 milliradian instantaneous field of view and a spatial resolution (pixel size) of 10-m from 13,000 ft altitude, allowed a direct simulation of Thematic Mapper data with a 30-m resolution. The flight data chosen were obtained on 30 June 1973 over agricultural test sites in Indiana

Exploring Living-Learning Communities as a Venue for Men’s Identity Construction.

    Get PDF
THIS QUALITATIVE STUDY EXPLORED how male undergraduate students experienced living-learning community environments. Findings revealed that living-learning communities provided men a safe haven from rigid gender role expectations, offered a plethora of involvement opportunities, and fostered relationships with faculty and peers. The findings highlight the potential of living-learning communities to provide men with the support they need to reject rigid gender expectations and develop a healthy identity. Recommendations for practice are discussed

The Search for AGN in Distant Galaxy Clusters

We are undertaking the first systematic study of the prevalence of AGN activity in a large sample of high redshift galaxy clusters. Local clusters contain mainly red elliptical galaxies, and have little or no luminous AGN activity. However, recent studies of some moderate to high redshift clusters have revealed significant numbers of luminous AGN within the cluster. This effect may parallel the Butcher-Oemler effect - the increase in the fraction of blue galaxies in distant clusters compared to local clusters. Our aim is to verify and quantify recent evidence that AGN activity in dense environments increases with redshift, and to evaluate the significance of this effect. As cluster AGN are far less prevalent than field sources, a large sample of over 120 cluster fields at z > 0.1 has been selected from the Chandra archives and is being analysed for excess point sources. The size of the excess, the radial distribution and flux of the sources and the dependence of these on cluster redshift and luminosity will reveal important information about the triggering and fueling of AGN.Comment: 2 pages, to appear in proceedings of 'Multi-wavelength AGN surveys', Cozumel, 200
