    Wrist joint assembly

    A wrist joint assembly is provided for use with a mechanical manipulator arm for finely positioning an end-effector carried by the wrist joint on the terminal end of the manipulator arm. The wrist joint assembly is pivotable about a first axis to produce a yaw motion, a second axis is to produce a pitch motion, and a third axis to produce a roll motion. The wrist joint assembly includes a disk segment affixed to the terminal end of the manipulator arm and a first housing member, a second housing member, and a third housing member. The third housing member and the mechanical end-effector are moved in the yaw, pitch, and roll motion. Drive means are provided for rotating each of the housings about their respective axis which includes a cluster of miniature motors having spur gears carried on the output drive shaft which mesh with a center drive gear affixed on the housing to be rotated

    The first use of Fulton's K for assessing and comparing the conditions of inter-tidal fish populations

    Fulton's K condition factor was applied, for the first time, to inter-tidal specimens of the shanny (Lipophrys pholis) and long-spined scorpion fish (Taurulus bubalis) from two English rocky shore and two Welsh rocky shore sites during summer 2010 and winter 2011. As both species contribute to the diet of commercial species such as cod (Gadus morhua) and near-threatened species such as the European otter (Lutra lutra), their condition may affect that of these predators. Fulton's K found that inter-tidal Welsh fish maintained a ‘good’ condition between seasons, whereas the inter-tidal English fish were in a poorer condition during winter. Although condition also changed amongst the sites on each coast, further studies are needed into fish morphologies, environmental parameters, prey availabilities and abundances, and fish specimen sex and maturities

    Characterizations of four specimens processed as a part of the M553 sphere forming experiment performed during the Skylab 1 and 2 flight

    Four specimens identified as SL-1.3, SL-1.8, SL-1.9 and SL-2.5 were submitted for metallurgical characterization. These specimens had been processed in the M512 Facility as a part of the M553 Sphere Forming Experiment performed during the Skylab 1/2 flight. Three of these specimens, SL-1.3, SL-1.8, and SL-2.5 were designed to be melted completely by the electron beam and detach themselves from their support posts and resolidify while floating free in the near zero gravity and vacuum environment of space. Specimens SL-1.3 and SL-1.8 were completely melted, but it is believed they did not leave their posts before solidifying. Specimen SL-2.5 was only partially melted. Specimen SL-1.9 was to be completely melted and retained on a large sting which was accomplished as planned. The nominal composition of the four specimens was: (1) SL-1.3 - Ni 12% Sn; (2) SL-1.8 - Ni 30% Cu; (3) SL-1.9 - Pure Ni; and (4) SL-2.5 - Pure Ni. These four specimens have been examined according to the Phase B Characterization Plan. The results are discussed and compared with similar characterization analyses run on ground base specimens

    Using Technology within the Teacher Preparation Program as a Model for Effective Instruction

    This article describes a methods course for teachers of elementary science and how it was enhanced to increase students’ abilities and attitudes toward using technology as a tool in teaching science. The course was enhanced as a result of the Virginia Collaborative for Excellence in the Preparation of Teachers (VCEPT) project. Prior to this project, the course was known for its constructivist approach, cooperative group activities, and experiential base that allowed students to actually do and teach elementary science. As a result of VCEPT, the class now also features an elaborate technology component. Technology of many types are regularly modeled in the methods classroom. Students are exposed to and have hands-on experiences with selected technologies and are asked to use technology in order to complete a variety of different projects

    A conceptual approach for noncontact calorimetry in space

    A concept is developed and described which allows to measure the heat capacity and the effective thermal conductivity of stable and undercooled liquid metals and alloys in an electromagnetic levitation apparatus. We propose to use an ac pulse heating method which is used nowadays as a standard technique for precision measurement of low temperature heat capacities. The ideal process parameters including the drop diameter D, temperature T, and frequency of measurement ω can be optimized when the following relations hold for the external and internal relaxation time constants τ_1 and τ_2, respectively: ωτ_1≳10 and ωτ_2<0.1. Then heat capacity data can be obtained with an accuracy of better than 1% with D about 5 to 10 mm, T between 1200 and 1800 K and ω between 0.1 and 1 Hz for typical metals and alloys
