    Satellite Test Assistant Robot (STAR)

    Get PDF
A three-year, three-phase program to demonstrate the applicability of telerobotic technology to the testing of satellites and other spacecraft has been initiated. Specifically, the objectives are to design, fabricate, and install into the JPL 25-ft. Space Simulator (SS) a system that will provide the capability to view test articles from all directions in both the visible and infrared (IR) spectral regions, to automatically map the solar flux intensity over the entire work volume of the chamber, and to provide the capability for leak detection. The first year's work, which provides a vertically mobile viewing platform equipped with stereo cameras, will be discussed. Design constraints and system implementation approaches mandated by the requirements of thermal vacuum operation will be emphasized

Degenerate principal series of quantum Harish-Chandra modules

In this paper we study a quantum analogue of a degenerate principal series of Uqsun,nU_q \mathfrak{su}_{n,n}-modules (0<q<10<q<1) related to the Shilov boundary of the quantum n×nn \times n-matrix unit ball. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the modules to be simple and unitarizable and investigate their equivalence. These results are q-analogues of known classical results on reducibility and unitarizability of SU(n,n)-modules obtained by Johnson, Sahi, Zhang, Howe and Tan.Comment: 33 pages, 4 figure

    Properties from relativistic coupled-cluster without truncation: hyperfine constants of 25Mg+^{25}{\rm Mg}^+, 43Ca+^{43}{\rm Ca}^+ , 87Sr+^{87}{\rm Sr}^+ and 137Ba+^{137}{\rm Ba}^+

We demonstrate an iterative scheme for coupled-cluster properties calculations without truncating the dressed properties operator. For validation, magnetic dipole hyperfine constants of alkaline Earth ions are calculated with relativistic coupled-cluster and role of electron correlation examined. Then, a detailed analysis of the higher order terms is carried out. Based on the results, we arrive at an optimal form of the dressed operator. Which we recommend for properties calculations with relativistic coupled-cluster theory.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, 5 table

Control of macrophytes by grass carp (ctenopharyngodon idella) in a Waikato drain, New Zealand

Hornwort (Ceratophyllum demersum L.) and other aquatic macrophytes have historically been mechanically removed from the Rangiriri drain and Churchill East drain to maintain drain efficiency. As an alternative control method for the high plant biomass that accumulates at the end of summer, the effect of stocking diploid grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella L.) on the aquatic vegetation was evaluated in these Waikato drainage systems. At the start of the trial, both drains had a low diversity of aquatic macrophytes, and of the nine species (including the emergents), seven were exotic. Two months after grass carp were released to Churchill East drain (the treated drain) the four submerged and floating macrophyte species became scarce in the main drain. Over the same period, these species increased in biomass in Rangiriri drain (the untreated drain), where hornwort became dense and surface-reaching and remained so for the duration of the trial. However, grass carp did not control submerged vegetation in smaller side drains or the shallow, upper parts of the main drain, or the marginal sprawling species and emergent species. The cost of leasing the grass carp was similar to the cost of clearing the drains mechanically, but grass carp provided continuous weed control. However, subsequent to this trial, 62 dead grass carp were found in Churchill East drain in February 2001, and weed cover subsequently increased. This illustrates that grass carp management in New Zealand agricultural drains can be problematic due to periodic fish kills

Environmental surveys of arid land areas (Arizona) in the United States are presented. Maps of soils, vegetation, drainage patterns, and land use are shown. The distribution of uranium deposits, oil and gas pools, is also shown. Legislation pertaining to the preservation of natural resources is discussed

A new proof that alternating links are non-trivial

We use a simple geometric argument and small cancellation properties of link groups to prove that alternating links are non-trivial. This proof uses only classic results in topology and combinatorial group theory.Comment: Minor changes. To appear in Fundamenta Mathematica

Heat transfer investigation of Langley Research Center transition models at a Mach number of 8, volume 2

    Get PDF
The results are presented of a wind tunnel test program to determine aerodynamic heat transfer distributions on delta body and straight body transition models of the space shuttle. Heat transfer rates were determined by the phase-change paint technique on Stycast and RTV models using Tempilag as the surface temperature indicator. The nominal test conditions were: Mach 8, length Reynolds numbers of 5 million and 7.4 million, and angles of attack of 20, 40, and 60 deg. Model details, test conditions, and reduced heat transfer data are included. Data reduction of the phase-change paint photographs was performed by utilizing a new technique

A Framework to Manage the Complex Organisation of Collaborating: Its Application to Autonomous Systems

In this paper we present an analysis of the complexities of large group collaboration and its application to develop detailed requirements for collaboration schema for Autonomous Systems (AS). These requirements flow from our development of a framework for collaboration that provides a basis for designing, supporting and managing complex collaborative systems that can be applied and tested in various real world settings. We present the concepts of "collaborative flow" and "working as one" as descriptive expressions of what good collaborative teamwork can be in such scenarios. The paper considers the application of the framework within different scenarios and discuses the utility of the framework in modelling and supporting collaboration in complex organisational structures
