    Engineering quantum dots for electrical control of the fine structure splitting

    We have studied the variation in fine-structure splitting (FSS) under application of vertical electric field in a range of quantum dots grown by different methods. In each sample we confirm that this energy splitting changes linearly over the field range we can access. We conclude that this linear tuning is a general feature of self-assembled quantum dots, observed under different growth conditions, emission wavelengths and in different material systems. Statistical measurements of characteristic parameters such as emission energy, Stark shift and FSS tuning are presented which may provide a guide for future attempts to increase the yield of quantum dots that can be tuned to a minimal value of FSS with vertical electric field

    Use of variability in national and regional data to estimate the prevalence of lymphangioleiomyomatosis

    Background: Understanding the true prevalence of lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is important in estimating disease burden and targeting specific interventions. As with all rare diseases, obtaining reliable epidemiological data is difficult and requires innovative approaches. Aim: To determine the prevalence and incidence of LAM using data from patient organizations in seven countries, and to use the extent to which the prevalence of LAM varies regionally and nationally to determine whether prevalence estimates are related to health-care provision. Methods: Numbers of women with LAM were obtained from patient groups and national databases from seven countries (n = 1001). Prevalence was calculated for regions within countries using female population figures from census data. Incidence estimates were calculated for the USA, UK and Switzerland. Regional variation in prevalence and changes in incidence over time were analysed using Poisson regression and linear regression. Results: Prevalence of LAM in the seven countries ranged from 3.4 to 7.8/million women with significant variation, both between countries and between states in the USA. This variation did not relate to the number of pulmonary specialists in the region nor the percentage of population with health insurance, but suggests a large number of patients remain undiagnosed. The incidence of LAM from 2004 to 2008 ranged from 0.23 to 0.31/million women/per year in the USA, UK and Switzerland. Conclusions: Using this method, we have found that the prevalence of LAM is higher than that previously recorded and that many patients with LAM are undiagnose

    Effects of fatiguing constant versus alternating intensity intermittent isometric muscle actions on maximal torque and neuromuscular responses

    Objective: To determine the effects of constant versus alternating applications of torque during fatiguing, intermittent isometric muscle actions of the leg extensors on maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) torque and neuromuscular responses. Methods: Sixteen subjects performed two protocols, each consisting of 50 intermittent isometric muscle actions of the leg extensors with equal average load at a constant 60% MVIC or alternating 40 then 80% (40/80%) MVIC with a work-to-rest ratio of 6-s on and 2-s off. MVIC torque as well as electromyographic signals from the vastus lateralis (VL), vastus medialis (VM), and rectus femoris (RF) and mechanomyographic signals from the VL were recorded pretest, immediately posttest, and 5-min posttest. Results: The results indicated that there were no time-related differences between the 60% MVIC and 40/80% MVIC protocols. The MVIC torque decreased posttest (22 to 26%) and remained depressed 5-min posttest (9%). There were decreases in electromyographic frequency (14 to 19%) and mechanomyographic frequency (23 to 24%) posttest that returned to pretest levels 5-min posttest. There were no changes in electromyographic amplitude and mechanomyogrpahic amplitude. Conclusions: These findings suggested that these neuromuscular parameters did not track the fatigue-induced changes in MVIC torque after 5-min of recovery

    Serendipitous Discovery of Three Millisecond Pulsars with the GMRT in Fermi-directed Survey and Follow-up Radio Timing

    We report the discovery of three millisecond pulsars (MSPs): PSRs J1120-3618, J1646-2142, and J1828+0625 with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) at a frequency of 322 MHz using a 32 MHz observing bandwidth. These sources were discovered serendipitously while conducting the deep observations to search for millisecond radio pulsations in the directions of unidentified Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) γ-ray sources. We also present phase coherent timing models for these MSPs using ∼5 yr of observations with the GMRT. PSR J1120-3618 has a 5.5 ms spin period and is in a binary system with an orbital period of 5.6 days and minimum companion mass of 0.18 M, PSR J1646-2142 is an isolated object with a spin period of 5.8 ms, and PSR J1828+0625 has a spin period of 3.6 ms and is in a binary system with an orbital period of 77.9 days and minimum companion mass of 0.27 M. The two binaries have very low orbital eccentricities, in agreement with expectations for MSP-helium white dwarf systems. Using the GMRT 607 MHz receivers having a 32 MHz bandwidth, we have also detected PSR J1646-2142 and PSR J1828+0625, but not PSR J1120-3618. PSR J1646-2142 has a wide profile, with significant evolution between 322 and 607 MHz, whereas PSR J1120-3618 exhibits a single peaked profile at 322 MHz and PSR J1828+0625 exhibits a single peaked profile at both the observing frequencies. These MSPs do not have γ-ray counterparts, indicating that these are not associated with the target Fermi LAT pointing emphasizing the significance of deep blind searches for MSPs. © 2022.
