The Second NASA Formal Methods Workshop 1992
The primary goal of the workshop was to bring together formal methods researchers and aerospace industry engineers to investigate new opportunities for applying formal methods to aerospace problems. The first part of the workshop was tutorial in nature. The second part of the workshop explored the potential of formal methods to address current aerospace design and verification problems. The third part of the workshop involved on-line demonstrations of state-of-the-art formal verification tools. Also, a detailed survey was filled in by the attendees; the results of the survey are compiled
An optical fiber-taper probe for wafer-scale microphotonic device characterization
A small depression is created in a straight optical fiber taper to form a
local probe suitable for studying closely spaced, planar microphotonic devices.
The tension of the "dimpled" taper controls the probe-sample interaction length
and the level of noise present during coupling measurements. Practical
demonstrations with high-Q silicon microcavities include testing a dense array
of undercut microdisks (maximum Q = 3.3x10^6) and a planar microring (Q =

Adiabatic self-tuning in a silicon microdisk optical resonator
We demonstrate a method for adiabatically self-tuning a silicon microdisk resonator. This mechanism is not only able to sensitively probe the fast nonlinear cavity dynamics, but also provides various optical functionalities like pulse compression, shaping, and tunable time delay
Push-Pull Control of Motor Output
Inhibition usually decreases input–output excitability of neurons. If, however, inhibition is coupled to excitation in a push–pull fashion, where inhibition decreases as excitation increases, neuron excitability can be increased. Although the presence of push–pull organization has been demonstrated in single cells, its functional impact on neural processing depends on its effect on the system level. We studied push–pull in the motor output stage of the feline spinal cord, a system that allows independent control of inhibitory and excitatory components. Push–pull organization was clearly present in ankle extensor motoneurons, producing increased peak-to-peak modulation of synaptic currents. The effect at the system level was equally strong. Independent control of the inhibitory component showed that the stronger the background of inhibition, the greater the peak force production. This illustrates the paradox at the heart of push–pull organization: increased force output can be achieved by increasing background inhibition to provide greater disinhibition
What is the Value of Public Goods Generated by a National Football League Team: A CVM Approach
Using the Contingent Valuation Method, this paper estimates the value of public goods the National Football League’s Jaguars produce for Jacksonville, Florida, including the value of elevating Jacksonville to major league status. It also estimates the incremental value of public goods potentially produced by a National Basketball Association team in Jacksonville. The present value of public goods created by the Jaguars is 12.7 million. Sports public goods probably cannot justify the large public expenditures on stadiums and arenas.
