    An intelligent tutoring system for space shuttle diagnosis

    An Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) transcends conventional computer-based instruction. An ITS is capable of monitoring and understanding student performance thereby providing feedback, explanation, and remediation. This is accomplished by including models of the student, the instructor, and the expert technician or operator in the domain of interest. The space shuttle fuel cell is the technical domain for the project described below. One system, Microcomputer Intelligence for Technical Training (MITT), demonstrates that ITS's can be developed and delivered, with a reasonable amount of effort and in a short period of time, on a microcomputer. The MITT system capitalizes on the diagnostic training approach called Framework for Aiding the Understanding of Logical Troubleshooting (FAULT) (Johnson, 1987). The system's embedded procedural expert was developed with NASA's C-Language Integrated Production (CLIP) expert system shell (Cubert, 1987)

Over the past six years, MITT technology has been used to develop training systems for nuclear power plant diesel generator diagnosis, Space Shuttle fuel cell diagnosis, and message processing diagnosis for the Minuteman missile.     MITT Writer is a software system for developing computer based training for complex technical domains. A training system produced by MITT Writer allows a student to learn and practice troubleshooting and diagnostic skills. The MITT (Microcomputer Intelligence for Technical Training) architecture is a reasonable approach to simulation based diagnostic training. MITT delivers training on available computing equipment, delivers challenging training and simulation scenarios, and has economical development and maintenance costs. A 15 month effort was undertaken in which the MITT Writer system was developed. A workshop was also conducted to train instructors in how to use MITT Writer. Earlier versions were used to develop an Intelligent Tutoring System for troubleshooting the Minuteman Missile Message Processing System

    Oscillatory Flows Induced by Microorganisms Swimming in Two-dimensions

    We present the first time-resolved measurements of the oscillatory velocity field induced by swimming unicellular microorganisms. Confinement of the green alga C. reinhardtii in stabilized thin liquid films allows simultaneous tracking of cells and tracer particles. The measured velocity field reveals complex time-dependent flow structures, and scales inversely with distance. The instantaneous mechanical power generated by the cells is measured from the velocity fields and peaks at 15 fW. The dissipation per cycle is more than four times what steady swimming would require.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Peripheral keratometry - accuracy and reliability in comparison to a corneal topography system, for application in rigid contact lens fitting

    Peripheral keratometry was once a widely used practice in optometry. The technique fell out of vogue in the mid-1960s when questions arose concerning its accuracy. In this project, the accuracy of peripheral keratometry was reevaluated on 162 normal non-contact lens-wearing eyes. The results obtained by a Reichert keratometer and a fabricated plastic peripheral fixation device were statistically compared to data obtained by the Humphreys MasterVue corneal keratoscopic mapping system. Patients were asked to fixate on a point 13mm from the center of a plastic disc overlaid onto the keratometer mire plate. The curvature value achieved with this fixation was then compared to the curvature value taken 3.0mm from the center of the corneal topographic map. Results show a high correlation(\u3e 90%) between the mid-peripheral corneal curvature data obtained with the peripheral keratometry disc and data obtained by the corneal mapping system 3.0mm from center. Results from this study also indicate that the keratometer, when used with a peripheral fixation device, can yield data just as accurate as the corneal topography system (p-value \u3e 0.05). Clinical application of this procedure could prove beneficial to the general11 optometric practitioner who fits rigid contact lenses but may not be able to afford an expensive corneal mapping system
