    A note on the incidence of soilborne fungi in six crops used in rotation with potatoes

    L'incidence des champignons telluriques a été déterminée dans les tissus immédiatement sous la ligne de sol chez le trÚfle (Trifolium hybridum et T. pratense), le pois (Pisum sativum), le soya (Glycine max), le ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) cultivés en rotation avec les pommes de terre (Solanum tuberosum). Les légumineuses avaient une incidence significativement plus élevée de Verticillium albo-atrum, Colletotrichum coccodes et Fusarium solani que les graminées. Les pois avaient l'incidence la plus élevée de V. albo-atrum et de F. solani. Le C. coccodes a été isolé plus fréquemment du soya que du trÚfle, des pois, du ryegrass, de l'orge ou du blé d'automne. Le Verticillium dahliae a été isolé de toutes les cultures, excepté le trÚfle. Les graminées avaient une incidence significativement plus élevée de V. dahliae que les légumineuses. L'incidence du Fusarium sambucinum était plus élevée chez le soya que chez les autres cultures. Le Fusarium oxysporum a été isolé plus fréquemment du soya et de l'orge. L'incidence la plus élevée de Rhizoctonia solani a été trouvée chez le trÚfle mais il a été également isolé plus fréquemment du blé d'automne et du ryegrass que du soya et de l'orge.The incidence of soilborne fungi was determined in tissue immediately below the soil line of clover (Trifolium hybridum and T. pratense), peas (Pisum sativum), soybean (Glycine max), ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum), barley (Hordeum vulgare), and winter wheat (Triticum aestivum) grown in rotation with potatoes (Solarium tuberosum). Legume crops had significantly higher incidence of Verticillium albo-atrum, Colletotrichum coccodes, and Fusarium solani than the gramineaceous crops. Peas had the highest incidence of V. albo-atrum and F. solani.C. coccodes was isolated more frequently from soybean than from clover, peas, ryegrass, barley, or winter wheat. Verticillium dahliae was isolated from all crops except clover. Gramineaceous crops had a significantly higher incidence of V. dahliae than legume crops. The incidence of Fusarium sambucinum was higher in soybeans than all other crops. Fusarium oxysporum was isolated most frequently from soybeans and barley. The highest incidence of Rhizoctonia solani was in clover, but it was also isolated more frequently from winter wheat and ryegrass than from soybean and barley

La culture prĂ©cĂ©dente a eu le plus grand impact sur le nombre de nematodes. Les sĂ©quences des cultures ont parfois eu une influence sur les populations de nematodes des nodositĂ©s (principalement Pratylenchus penetrans) et sur les rendements. Dans les champs commerciaux d'orge (Hordeum vulgare), les nematodes des nodositĂ©s Ă©taient plus nombreux lorsque l'orge suivait une culture combinĂ©e de trĂšfle rouge (Trifolium pratense) et de flĂ©ole (Phleum pratense) et les nematodes du rabougrissement (Tylenchorynchus spp., principalement T. dubiuset Merlinius spp.) Ă©taient plus nombreux quand l'orge Ă©tait semĂ©e pendant deux annĂ©es consĂ©cutives. L’aldicarbe a rĂ©duit le nombre de nĂ©matodes des nodositĂ©s en plus d’accroĂźtre les rendements en pommes de terre et en soya.A field study assessing the influence of the previous crop, the crop sequence, and aldicarb treatments on root lesion nematode populations and crop yields was carried out in Prince-Edward-Island, Canada. The most recent crop had the greatest impact on nematode numbers. The crop sequences had an influence in some cases on root lesion nematode populations (primarily Pratylenchus penetrans) and on crop yields. In commercial barley (Hordeum vulgare) fields, root lesion nematodes in roots were greatest when barley followed a red clover (Trifolium pratense) timothy (Phleum pratense) ley, and stunt nematodes (Tylenchorhynchus spp., primarily T. dubius, and Merlinius spp.) were more common when barley followed barley. The combined dry weight of foliage and grain was larger when barley was planted after potato (Solanumtuberosum) and smaller when barley followed barley or a red clover-timothy mixture. Under experimental field conditions, root lesion nematode populations were largest in barley roots when barley followed potato and grain yields were smallest when barley followed barley. Changes in nematode populations in potato were not associated with crop sequences. Potato tuber yields were higher in the sequences that began with wheat (Triticum aestivum) or barley than in the sequences that began with potato or soybean (Glycine max).     Nonrelativistically forbidden, single-photon transition rates between low lying states of the helium atom are rigorously derived within quantum electrodynamics theory. Equivalence of velocity and length gauges, including relativistic corrections is explicitly demonstrated.     On Thermodynamical Properties of Some Coset CFT Backgrounds

    We investigate the thermodynamical features of two Lorentzian signature backgrounds that arise in string theory as exact CFTs and possess more than two disconnected asymptotic regions: the 2-d charged black hole and the Nappi-Witten cosmological model. We find multiple smooth disconnected Euclidean versions of the charged black hole background. They are characterized by different temperatures and electro-chemical potentials. We show that there is no straightforward analog of the Hartle-Hawking state that would express these thermodynamical features. We also obtain multiple Euclidean versions of the Nappi-Witten cosmological model and study their singularity structure.     Facilitating children's self-concept: A rationale and evaluative study

    This study reports on the design and effectiveness of the Exploring Self-Concept program for primary school children using self-concept as the outcome measure. The program aims to provide a procedure that incorporates organisation, elaboration, thinking, and problem-solving strategies and links these to children's multidimensional self-concept. The results of this research support the notion that teachers and guidance counsellors need to establish a nonthreatening framework that allows them to discuss with children a range of relevant issues related to peer pressure, parent relations, self-image, body image, gender bias, media pressure, values and life goals, in a systematic, objective and cooperative manner. Within the paper, notions associated with self-concept maturation, 'crystallisation' of self-concept beliefs, cognitive differentiation and self-concept segmentation are reviewed

    A Far-Ultraviolet View of Starburst Galaxies

    Recent observational and theoretical results on starburst galaxies related to the wavelength regime below 1200 A are discussed. The review covers stars, dust, as well as hot and cold gas. This wavelength region follows trends similar to those seen at longer wavelengths, with several notable exceptions. Even the youngest stellar populations show a turn-over in their spectral energy distributions, and line-blanketing is much more pronounced. Furthermore, the O VI line allows one to probe gas at higher temperatures than possible with lines at longer wavelengths. Molecular hydrogen lines (if detected) provide a glimpse of the cold phase.     Global Systems Science and Policy

    The vision of Global Systems Science (GSS) is to provide scientific evidence and means to engage into a reflective dialogue to support policy-making and public action and to enable civil society to collectively engage in societal action in response to global challenges like climate change, urbanisation, or social inclusion. GSS has four elements: policy and its implementation, the science of complex systems, policy informatics, and citizen engagement. It aims to give policy makers and citizens a better understanding of the possible behaviours of complex social systems. Policy informatics helps generate and evaluate policy options with computer-based tools and the abundance of data available today. The results they generate are made accessible to everybody—policymakers, citizens—through intuitive user interfaces, animations, visual analytics, gaming, social media, and so on. Examples of Global Systems include epidemics, finance, cities, the Internet, trade systems and more. GSS addresses the question of policies having desirable outcomes, not necessarily optimal outcomes. The underpinning idea of GSS is not to precisely predict but to establish possible and desirable futures and their likelihood. Solving policy problems is a process, often needing the requirements, constraints, and lines of action to be revisited and modified, until the problem is ‘satisficed’, i.e. an acceptable compromise is found between competing objectives and constraints. Thus policy problems and their solutions coevolve much as in a design process. Policy and societal action is as much about attempts to understand objective facts as it is about the narratives that guide our actions. GSS tries to reconcile these apparently contradictory modes of operations. GSS thus provides policy makers and society guidance on their course of action rather than proposing (illusionary) optimal solutions
