    Pressure and protein denaturation

    Get PDF
Kinetic analyses have indicated that moderate hydrostatic pressures, up to some 700 atmospheres, oppose reversible and irreversible denaturations of certain enzyme systems, apparent at temperatures above the normal optimum of the enzyme reaction, as well as at lower temperatures in the presence of denaturants such as alcohol (1-4). Qualitative observations have shown that such pressures also retard the precipitation of highly purified human serum globulin and egg albumin at 65° (5) and slow the destruction of specific antitoxic activity at the same temperature (6). In this study we have obtained quantitative data with regard to the influence of various pressures, up to 10,000 pounds per sq. in., and of low concentrations of ethyl alcohol on the time course of precipitation of human serum globulin (1) at 65° and pH 6.0

Civic Life in McMinnville - Wortman Family

Our project is centered on civic life in McMinnville, Oregon 100 years ago. Our focus was to uncover the media’s representation of this topic. We had the option to choose to cover the local McMinnville government, Linfield College itself, public schools, leading businesses, and/or important civic leaders. We decided to narrow our attention to a particularly prominent family in the McMinnville community at the time. The Wortman family is known for opening the first bank in McMinnville more than 100 years ago and was also influential in local politics and community development. After selling farm and boat interests in 1865, Mr. Wortman bought a small grocery and merchandise store in Oregon City that he ran for ten years. In 1875 he sold this interest and started a similar business in Benton County. With these years of practical experience and the knowledge of local demand, he came to McMinnville in 1883 and established the Bank of McMinnville. When it was incorporated in 1885 it became the first bank in Yamhill County. Today the Wortman’s bank is known as Key Bank and stands in the same location as it did 100 years ago. A large number of photographs and newspaper clippings exist that define the Wortman family and where they stood in the community then and now, which were used in this project

The Impact of Late-Career Health and Employment Shocks on Social Security and Other Wealth

About one-quarter of workers age 51 to 55 in 1992 developed health-related work limitations and about one-fifth were laid off from their jobs before age 62. Although late-career health and employment shocks often derail retirement savings plans, Social Security's disability insurance, spouse and survivor benefits, and progressive benefit formula provide important protections. In fact, health shocks increase Social Security's lifetime value, primarily because the system's disability insurance allows some disabled workers to collect benefits before age 62. However, if the system's disability insurance program did not exist, the onset of health-related work limitations would substantially reduce Social Security wealth
