Hydrographs by Single Linear Reservoir Model
A single linear reservoir (SLR) model is presented which provides a simple means for developing runoff hydrographs for small, urban watersheds. The model only requires one parameter, K, which can be estimated from watershed and precipitation characteristics. Several methods for estimating K and the results of testing the model on various watersheds are presented.Waller Creek Working Grou
A Peak Point Theorem for Uniform Algebras on Real-Analytic Varieties
It was once conjectured that if is a uniform algebra on its maximal ideal
space , and if each point of is a peak point for , then .
This peak-point conjecture was disproved by Brian Cole in 1968. Here we
establish a peak-point theorem for uniform algebras generated by real-analytic
functions on real-analytic varieties, generalizing previous results of the
authors and John Wermer
A spatial covariance (123)I-5IA-85380 SPECT study of α4ÎČ2 nicotinic receptors in Alzheimer's disease
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by widespread degeneration of cholinergic neurons, particularly in the basal forebrain. However, the pattern of these deficits and relationship with known brain networks is unknown. In this study, we sought to clarify this and used 123I-5-iodo-3-[2(S)-2-azetidinylmethoxy] pyridine (1235IA-85380) single photon emission computed tomography to investigate spatial covariance of α4ÎČ2 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in AD and healthy controls. Thirteen AD and 16 controls underwent 1235IA-85380 and regional cerebral blood flow (99mTc-exametazime) single photon emission computed tomography scanning. We applied voxel principal component (PC) analysis, generating series of principal component images representing common intercorrelated voxels across subjects. Linear regression generated specific α4ÎČ2 and regional cerebral blood flow covariance patterns that differentiated AD from controls. The α4ÎČ2 pattern showed relative decreased uptake in numerous brain regions implicating several networks including default mode, salience, and Papez hubs. Thus, as well as basal forebrain and brainstem cholinergic system dysfunction, cholinergic deficits mediated through nicotinic acetylcholine receptors could be evident within key networks in AD. These findings may be important for the pathophysiology of AD and its associated cognitive and behavioral phenotypes
Atypical Work and Employment Continuity
Atypical employment arrangements such as agency temporary work and contracting have long
been criticized as offering more precarious and unstable work than regular employment. Using data from two datasets Ă the CAEAS and the NLSY79 Ă we determine whether workers who take such jobs rather than regular employment, or the alternative of continued job search, subsequently experience greater or lesser employment continuity. Observed differences between the various working arrangements are starkest when we do not account for unobserved individual heterogeneity. Controlling for the latter, we report that the advantage of regular work over atypical work and atypical work over continued joblessness dissipates.atypical work, open-ended work, employment continuity, unemployment, inactivity
The Reactivity of MgB2 with Common Substrate and Electronic Materials
The reactivity of MgB2 with powdered forms of common substrate and electronic
materials is reported. Reaction temperatures between 600 C and 800 C,
encompassing the range commonly employed in thin-film fabrication, were
studied. The materials tested for reactivity were ZrO2, yttria stabilized
zirconia (YSZ), MgO, Al2O3, SiO2, SrTiO3, TiN, TaN, AlN, Si, and SiC. At 600 C,
MgB2 reacted only with SiO2 and Si. At 800 C, however, reactions were observed
for MgB2 with Al2O3, SiO2, Si, SiC, and SrTiO3. The Tc of MgB2 decreased in the
reactions with SiC and Al2O3.Comment: 5 figure
Covariant Symmetry Classifications for Observables of Cosmological Birefringence
Polarizations of electromagnetic waves from distant galaxies are known to be
correlated with the source orientations. These quantities have been used to
search for signals of cosmological birefringence. We review and classify
transformation properties of the polarization and source orientation
observables. The classifications give a firm foundation to certain practices
which have sprung up informally in the literature. Transformations under parity
play a central role, showing that parity violation in emission or in the
subsequent propagation is an observable phenomenon. We also discuss statistical
measures, correlations and distributions which transform properly and which can
be used for systematic data analysis.Comment: 8 pages, revtex, 1 postscript figur
