Quantization and Fractional Quantization of Currents in Periodically Driven Stochastic Systems I: Average Currents
This article studies Markovian stochastic motion of a particle on a graph
with finite number of nodes and periodically time-dependent transition rates
that satisfy the detailed balance condition at any time. We show that under
general conditions, the currents in the system on average become quantized or
fractionally quantized for adiabatic driving at sufficiently low temperature.
We develop the quantitative theory of this quantization and interpret it in
terms of topological invariants. By implementing the celebrated Kirchhoff
theorem we derive a general and explicit formula for the average generated
current that plays a role of an efficient tool for treating the current

Measurement of Ion Beam Losses due to Bound-Free Pair Production in RHIC
When the LHC operates as a Pb82+ ion collider, losses of Pb81+ ions, created through Bound-free Pair Production at the collision point, and localized in cold magnets, are expected to be a major luminosity limit. With Au79+ ions at RHIC, this effect is not a limitation because the Au78+ production rate is low, and the Au78+ beam produced is inside the momentum aperture. When RHIC collided Cu29+ ions, secondary beam production rates were lower still but the Cu28+ ions produced were predicted to be lost at a well-defined location, creating the opportunity for the first direct observation of BFPP effects in an ion collider. We report on measurements of localized beam losses due to BFPP with copper beams in RHIC and comparisons to predictions from tracking and Monte Carlo simulation
Impact of Meat Consumption, Preparation, and Mutagens on Aggressive Prostate Cancer
The association between meat consumption and prostate cancer remains unclear, perhaps reflecting heterogeneity in the types of tumors studied and the method of meat preparation—which can impact the production of carcinogens.We address both issues in this case-control study focused on aggressive prostate cancer (470 cases and 512 controls), where men reported not only their meat intake but also their meat preparation and doneness level on a semi-quantitative food-frequency questionnaire. Associations between overall and grilled meat consumption, doneness level, ensuing carcinogens and aggressive prostate cancer were assessed using multivariate logistic regression.Higher consumption of any ground beef or processed meats were positively associated with aggressive prostate cancer, with ground beef showing the strongest association (OR = 2.30, 95% CI:1.39–3.81; P-trend = 0.002). This association primarily reflected intake of grilled or barbequed meat, with more well-done meat conferring a higher risk of aggressive prostate cancer. Comparing high and low consumptions of well/very well cooked ground beef to no consumption gave OR's of 2.04 (95% CI:1.41–2.96) and 1.51 (95% CI:1.06–2.14), respectively. In contrast, consumption of rare/medium cooked ground beef was not associated with aggressive prostate cancer. Looking at meat mutagens produced by cooking at high temperatures, we detected an increased risk with 2-amino-3,8-Dimethylimidazo-[4,5-f]Quinolaxine (MelQx) and 2-amino-3,4,8-trimethylimidazo(4,5-f)qunioxaline (DiMelQx), when comparing the highest to lowest quartiles of intake: OR = 1.69 (95% CI:1.08–2.64;P-trend = 0.02) and OR = 1.53 (95% CI:1.00–2.35; P-trend = 0.005), respectively.Higher intake of well-done grilled or barbequed red meat and ensuing carcinogens could increase the risk of aggressive prostate cancer

A 4.8- and 8.6-GHz Survey of the Large Magellanic Cloud: I The Images
Detailed 4.8- and 8.6-GHz radio images of the entire Large Magellanic Cloud
with half-power beamwidths of 33" at 4.8 GHz and 20" at 8.6 GHz have been
obtained using the Australia Telescope Compact Array. A total of 7085 mosaic
positions were used to cover an area of 6 degrees on a side. Full polarimetric
observations were made. These images have sufficient spatial resolution (~8 and
5 pc, respectively) and sensitivity (3-sigma of 1 mJy/beam) to identify most of
the individual SNRs and H II regions and also, in combination with available
data from the Parkes 64-m telescope, the structure of the smooth emission in
that galaxy. In addition, limited data using the sixth antenna at 4.5 to 6-km
baselines are available to distinguish bright point sources (<3 and 2 arcsec,
respectively) and to help estimate sizes of individual sources smaller than the
resolution of the full survey. The resultant database will be valuable for
statistical studies and comparisons with x-ray, optical and infrared surveys of

Isolation and genomic characterization of Chaoyang virus strain ROK144 from \u3ci\u3eAedes vexansnipponii\u3c/i\u3e from the Republic of Korea
During June 2003, mosquito surveillance was conducted at a US Army installation and a US Military training site 2 km south of the demilitarized zone, Republic of Korea. Mosquitoes were collected using Mosquito MagnetsTM, sorted to species, and assayed for the presence of arboviruses. From the 3,149 mosquitoes that were sorted into126 pools, one Aedes vexan snipponii pool (out of 73 pools) tested positive for flavivirus RNA by reverse transcription-PCR. After isolation from C6/36 cell culture supernatant, the viral genome was sequenced and found to be 98.9% related to Chaoyang virus, a potential arthropod-specific flavivirus. This report details the first identification of Chaoyang virus in the Republic of Korea and highlights its relationship to other flaviviruses

The Encouraging Novel Amelogenesis Models and Ex vivo cell Lines (ENAMEL) Development workshop was held on 23 June 2017 at the Bethesda headquarters of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR).
