Diversification and spatial expansion are investigated in relation to eight Type III companies in New Zealand. The case companies are delimited on the basis of a three stage classification of corporate growth and organisation. The conceptual background to the thesis also includes an examination of more general aspects of corporate decision making, strategy, and the expansion and impact of firms in space. Two areas of research are examined - (a) the incidence and nature of diversification in the eight companies, and (b) spatial aspects associated with diversification and expansion. A case study approach is used to outline the diversification and spatial expansion of the companies over time. A three-fold classification of diversification is proposed: diversification within and between activity groups and diversification function. Diversification is then viewed in relation to the respective growth developments of the case companies. On the basis of these accounts, a number of conclusions are drawn on the temporal development of diversification in the spatial expansion of the eight companies. Diversification was found to be an important component in the corporate growth and geographic expansion of the case companies. Furthermore, a review of the geographic distribution of their activities suggests the companies have an important contribution to national and regional development in New Zealand

Quantitative measurement of the composition of Al_xGa_(1āˆ’x)As heterostructures using a simple backscattered electron detector

We describe a technique for the quantitative measurement of composition in Al_xGa_(1āˆ’x)As heterostructures using a simple solidā€state backscattered electron detector in a scanning electron microscope. Calibration data are presented and are shown to be consistent with the Castaing [Adv. Electron. Electron Phys. 13, 317 (1960)] theory. The technique is applied to image representative Al_xGa_(1āˆ’x)As heterostructures including a graded index separate confinement heterostructure (GRINSCH) laser structure

Laser power-meter comparison at far-infrared wavelengths and terahertz frequencies

We have evaluated the responsivity of seven different thermal detectors compared to an electrically calibrated photoacoustic reference detector at 119 Āµm (2.5 THz) and 394 Āµm (0.76 THz) laser wavelengths. Among the thermal detectors is an electrically calibrated thermopile having a vertically aligned carbon nanotube array as the absorber. We document the uncertainty contributions attributable to the photoacoustic reference detector along with a definition of a calibration factor based on the measurement protocol. The expanded relative uncertainty (k = 2) and a calibration factor of each detector are tabulated

Counting People and Making People Count: Key Sources of Population Projections

This literature review is the first section of a two part literature review in to population dynamics. The literature review attempts to answer the question, "What are the key sources of information on population dynamics globally and for the countries and regions where DFID works?"This literature review is the first section of a two part literature review in to population dynamics focussing on a review of key global information sources. Three sources of centrally generated projections exist: The Population Division of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations Secretariat, the World Bank and the Wittgenstein Centre. As the World Bank relies heavily on the UN its role will not be considered. The premier source of population projections is the UN Population Division. This data is easily accessible and updated every two years. Five global datasets are produced by the Division (i) World Population Prospects, (ii) World Urbanisation Prospects, (iii) World Population Policies, (iv) Estimates of family planning indicators and (v) Estimates of the number of international migrants

Counting people and making people count: Implications of future population change for sustainable development

This literature review is the second section of a two part review in to population dynamics. This second section of the review attempts to address what are the most significant implications of these dynamics for international development, as currently articulated in the most up-to-date literature. The following summary is taken from the Key Findings of the 2015 Revision of the UN Population Divisionā€™s World Population Prospects (United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs Population Division, 2015) and is purely to provide an overview of future population change. The global development challenges of future population change are broad and a comprehensive review is beyond the scope of this pilot learning journey. This report instead focusses on the areas highlighted by DFID at this stage of the journey with the addition of addressing the fertility challenge
