The 2020 Pandemic and Cities: London as a Case Study
This article analyses the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic during 2020 on Londonâs socio-economic structure. After outlining the history of health crises in London during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and the cityâs demographic decline and resurgence, it describes the 2020 pandemicâs impact on Londonâs socio-economic inequalities and the role of home working. Context is provided by describing my own locality and experience while the wider context is discussed through comparison with other highly globalised cities such as Singapore. The article concludes by placing Londonâs 2020 pandemic within a historical perspective as infections increase after the summer holidays and the beginning of the teaching term
Poles Apart? EU Enlargement and the Labour Market Outcomes of immigrants in the UK
The UK was one of only three countries to allow migrants from accession countries to enter their labour markets more or less without restriction following EU enlargement in May 2004. Therefore, it is important to establish the characteristics and labour market performance of migrants from these countries who have subsequently entered the UK. We principally analyse Labour Force Survey data to compare the labour market outcomes of recent migrants from Poland and other accession countries to those of earlier migrant cohorts from these countries as well as to those of other recent migrants to the UK. We find that the majority of post-enlargement migrants from accession countries have found employment in low paying jobs, despite some (especially Poles) having relatively high levels of education. It follows that recent Polish migrants typically have lower returns to their education than other recent arrivals. Migrants from the new entrants who arrived immediately prior to enlargement possess similar characteristics and labour market outcomes, apart from having a higher propensity to be self-employed. These results are discussed in the context of policy changes, migration strategies, assimilation effects and possible impacts on the sending countries.Migration, EU Enlargement, Labour Market Outcomes

The changing role of railways in the life of european pilgrimage shrine
This paper examines the changing role of the railway in the develop-ment of one of the most important Roman Catholic shrines â Lourdes in France. During the second half of the nineteenth and the first half of the twentieth century trains were vital in establishing Lourdesâ position as a major national and inter-national shrines. Although the expansion of car ownership and tourism after the Second World War have vastly increased, the numbers visiting the shrine, the importance of the railway has declined. This paper examines the changing role played by the railway in the shrineâs development, the declining importance of organised pilgrimage groups and the growth of individual choice and the flexibil-ity provided by diverse modes of transport. It concludes with a consideration of the relevance of this case study to the study of pilgrimage and tourism in Europe and beyond

This process raises fundamental questions regarding the Nation-State in a post colonial Europe and the contribution that Muslims can bring to public debates on « common interest ». These questions are analysed on the basis of specific contexts : energising cultural structures to which belong Muslims of large English cities, « bad boys » and people from the conservative North as weIl as debates in the mediaregarding what one should retain of the Nationâs history. In fact, Muslims in their various forms, take part in a wide cultural and political process, that of defining a changing Nation, but their participation may deliberately be refused
The Motivations of Pilgrimage Walking the St.Olav Way in Norway
Walking pilgrimages are experiencing a revival, while at the same time a change of character in light of our changing times. Pilgrimage walking is increasingly taking on non-religious dimensions, related to a personâs self and health as seen on long-distance walking pilgrimages such as the Camino routes to Santiago. Long-range walking pilgrimages seem to offer a promise and space for âpersonal fixingâ / âself-healingâ, thus attracting people with a variety of motives.
This article is based on an empirical study consisting of qualitative open-ended questionnaires with 53 respondents from 13 countries. It aims to shed light on the motives, expectations and hopes that make people walk the less known and studied Norwegian St. Olav Way and what motivational trends prevail there, compared to others pilgrimage routes such as the more popular Camino de Santiago de Compostela and Japanese Shikoku Henro trail. Motivational categories were generated through an inductive thematic analysis of their answers and explanations were sought, drawing on existing literature as well as meaning-making and motivational theories.
Results indicate that religious motives were not predominant in peopleâs quest with the journey. Instead, contemplation, health, social / solitary, pilgrimage walking / repeating, and nature motives stood out as the most significant, followed by less mentioned motives such as historical / cultural / travel interests, spiritual / religious reasons, a more present / simple / slow life, and life celebrations / crossroads / transitions.
These findings challenge popular assumptions about why people undertake long-term walking pilgrimages. Further research is needed given the emerging trend to seek long-distance pilgrimage walking for self-discovery / development / therapy. This is largely uncovered ground in health care / science, despite the fact that pilgrimages have, throughout time, been sought for betterment and wellbeing
Multimodality Treatment Improves Locoregional Control, Progression-Free and Overall Survival in Patients with Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer:A Retrospective Cohort Study Comparing Oncological Outcomes and Morbidity between Multimodality Treatment and Limited Treatment (May, 10.1245/s10434-021-10146-3, 2021)
Background: Patients with anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC) have poor overall survival, and the optimal management approach remains unclear. The aim of this study is to evaluate our experience with multimodality (MMT) versus limited treatment (LT) for ATC. Patients and Methods: A cohort study of patients with ATC managed in a tertiary referral center was undertaken. The outcomes of MMT were compared with those of LT. The primary outcome measures were locoregional control and progression-free and overall survival. Secondary outcome measures were treatment-related complications and factors associated with improved survival. Results: In total, 59 patients (35 females) with a median age of 73 years (range 39-99 years) and ATC stage IVA (n = 2), IVB (n = 28), or IVC (n = 29) were included. LT was utilized in 25 patients (42%), and 34 cases had MMT. MMT patients had a longer time of locoregional control (18.5 versus 1.9 months; p < 0.001), progression-free survival (3.5 versus 1.2 months; p < 0.001), and overall survival (6.9 versus 2.0 months; p < 0.001) when compared with LT. For patients with stage IVC ATC, locoregional control (p = 0.03), progression-free survival (p < 0.001), and overall survival (p < 0.001) were superior in the MMT cohort compared with LT. MMT had more treatment-related complications than LT (p < 0.001). An Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status < 2 (HR 0.30; p = 0.001) and MMT (HR 0.35; p = 0.008) were associated with improved overall survival. Conclusion: MMT is likely to improve locoregional control, progression-free survival, and overall survival in selected ATC patients including stage IVC tumors but comes with a greater complication risk
