Historical Estimates of World Population: An Evaluation
A myopic view of history and underdevelopment of theory have been two shortcomings of demography, related to the pragmatism of the discipline and to demographers\u27 predilection for precise measures. A healthy counterpoise is the current surge of interest in demographic history, where questions remote from current practical concerns invite study and exact data are scarce. Historical demography, hitherto an esoteric field of specialization, is now a robustly growing sub-discipline. Historians, archaeologists, and others are also joining in the exploration of neglected demographic fields of history. Demographer\u27s horizons are being stretched, new frontiers of interdisciplinary contact are being opened, and the historical foundations of theory are being strengthened and extended
Methods For Analyzing Components Of Change In Size And Structure Of The Labor Force With Application To Puerto Rico, 1950-60
The increase or decrease of a country\u27s labor force during a given period of time can be factored into the following components: A. Loss by death of labor force members. B. Net gain or loss by immigration and emigration of labor force members. C. Gain by entry into the labor force of individuals from the economically inactive population. D. Loss by retirement from the labor force into economically inactive status (including involuntary withdrawal on account of disability or for other reasons, as well as voluntary retirement). Likewise the change in number of workers attached to a given occupation or industry group of the labor force can be factored into the same four components, plus the fifth component: E. Net gain or loss by occupational or industrial mobility, i. e. transfers of labor force members from one occupation or industry to another. It is useful to subdivide components C and D as follows: C1 and D1. Labor force entries and retirements which would correspond to the maintenance of unchanging age-specific rates of entry and retirement (in the labor force as a whole and in given occupation or industry categories). C2 and D2. Entries and retirements due to changes during the period in the age-specific entry and retirement rates. The sum of components A, C1, and D1 can be considered as a measure of natural increase in the labor force as a whole or a given occupation or industry. This is the increase which would result from natural increase of the population and associated changes in its age structure without migration and without occupational or industrial mobility. Components B, C2, D2 and E are media through which the natural increase is modified under the influence of supply and demand factors

Les données de la campagne ZoNéCo 1 permettent de préciser la morphostructure du Sud des rides calédonienne et Loyauté qui s'avÚrent plus complexes que les cartes précédentes ne le montraient, mais on retrouve les principales structures de la région Calédonie-Loyauté. L'imagerie met en évidence les zones de roches nues ou encroûtées, la présence d'écoulements gravitaires du Sud du bassin des Loyauté vers le bassin Sud-Fidjien. (Résumé d'auteur

Drought and the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, 2012â2016: Environmental Review and Lessons
This paper reviews environmental management and the use of science in the SacramentoâSan Joaquin Delta during Californiaâs 2012â2016 drought. The review is based on available reports and data, and guided by discussions with 27Â agency staff, stake-holders, and researchers. Key management actions for the drought are discussed relative to four major drought water management priorities stated by water managers: support public health and safety, control saltwater intrusion, preserve cold water in Shasta Reservoir, and maintain minimum protections for endangered species. Despite some success in streamlining communication through interagency task forces, conflicting management mandates sometimes led to confusion about priorities and actions during the drought (i.e., water delivery, the environment, etc.). This report highlights several lessons and offers suggestions to improve management for future droughts. Recommendations include use of pre-drought warnings, timely drought declarations, improved transparency and useful documentation, better scientific preparation, development of a Delta drought management plan (including preparing for salinity barriers), and improved water accounting. Finally, better environmental outcomes occur when resources are applied to improving habitat and bolstering populations of native species during inter-drought periods, well before stressful conditions occur.
Extensive air showers with TeV-scale quantum gravity
One of the possible consequences of the existence of extra degrees of freedom
beyond the electroweak scale is the increase of neutrino-nucleon cross sections
() beyond Standard Model predictions. At ultra-high energies
this may allow the existence of neutrino-initiated extensive air showers. In
this paper, we examine the most relevant observables of such showers. Our
analysis indicates that the future Pierre Auger Observatory could be
potentially powerful in probing models with large compact dimensions.Comment: 7 pages revtex, 5 eps fig
Deep-Inelastic Final States in a Space-Time Description of Shower Development and Hadronization
We extend a quantum kinetic approach to the description of hadronic showers
in space, time and momentum space to deep-inelastic collisions, with
particular reference to experiments at HERA. We follow the history of hard
scattering events back to the initial hadronic state and forward to the
formation of colour-singlet pre-hadronic clusters and their decays into
hadrons. The time evolution of the space-like initial-state shower and the
time-like secondary partons are treated similarly, and cluster formation is
treated using a spatial criterion motivated by confinement and a
non-perturbative model for hadronization. We calculate the time evolution of
particle distributions in rapidity, transverse and longitudinal space. We also
compare the transverse hadronic energy flow and the distribution of observed
hadronic masses with experimental data from HERA, and find encouraging results.
The techniques developed in this paper may be applied in the future to more
complicated processes such as eA, pp, pA and AA collisions.Comment: 44 pages plus 14 postscript figure

An Ethnohistorical Perspective on Cheyenne Demography
Administrative censuses of the Southern Cheyenne Indians from 1880,1891, and 1900 permit family reconstitution, identification of residence groups, and comparisons of fertility between monogamous and polygynous women, when the records are approached by ethnohistori cal methods. This approach includes an awareness of the aboriginal adoption practices, kinship system, and naming practices.
