Apparatus and Method for Harvesting Carbon Nanotube Arrays

    Get PDF
An apparatus is provided for harvesting a carbon nanotube array from a substrate. The apparatus includes a peeler that peels the carbon nanotube array from the substrate and a support that receives the carbon nanotube array peeled from the substrate. In addition the apparatus includes a drawing device that simultaneously draws the carbon nanotube array from the substrate onto the support as the carbon nanotube array is peeled from the substrate. The peeler and drawing device are synchronized in operation so that as a given length of carbon nanotube array is peeled from the substrate, that same given length of carbon nanotube array is drawn onto the support

    Thermal Interface Material

A flexible sheet of aligned carbon nanotubes includes an array of aligned nanotubes in a free standing film form not adhered to the synthesis substrate, with a matrix infiltrated interstitially into the nanotube array with access to the nanotube tips from both the top and bottom. That is, the infiltrant is purposely limited from over-filling or coating one or both exterior top and/or bottom surfaces of the array, blocking access to the tips. A typical matrix is a polymer material

The rock magnetic fingerprint of chemical remagnetization in midcontinental Paleozoic carbonates

    Get PDF
Results of a paleomagnetic and rock magnetic survey of Paleozoic carbonates from 39 sites in the midcontinental U.S. show that many of these sites carry a stable remanence of apparent Permian age. Many of these remagnetized sites also have relatively high anhysteretic susceptibilities, and higher saturation remanence than most of the sites where the late Paleozoic remanence is absent. However the correlation between late Paleozoic remanence and high anhysteretic susceptibility or high saturation remanence is imperfect. The most diagnostic rock magnetic parameter for recognizing remagnetized sites is a ratio of anhysteretic remanence/saturation remanence exceeding 10%. We have found high ratios in almost all remagnetized sites, but in very few sites where the Late Paleozoic remanence is absent. The high ratios reflect the presence of a significant fraction of extremely fine-grained magnetite (a few tens of nanometers), spanning the superparamagnetic-single domain threshhold.Supported by NSF EAR 90-05075. Adoptive transfer of cytomegalovirus-specific CTL to stem cell transplant patients after selection by HLA–peptide tetramers

Stem cell transplantation is used widely in the management of a range of diseases of the hemopoietic system. Patients are immunosuppressed profoundly in the early posttransplant period, and reactivation of cytomegalovirus (CMV) remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. Adoptive transfer of donor-derived CMV-specific CD8(+) T cell clones has been shown to reduce the rate of viral reactivation; however, the complexity of this approach severely limits its clinical application. We have purified CMV-specific CD8(+) T cells from the blood of stem cell transplant donors using staining with HLA-peptide tetramers followed by selection with magnetic beads. CMV-specific CD8(+) cells were infused directly into nine patients within 4 h of selection. Median cell dosage was 8.6 x 10(3)/kg with a purity of 98% of all T cells. CMV-specific CD8(+) T cells became detectable in all patients within 10 d of infusion, and TCR clonotype analysis showed persistence of infused cells in two patients studied. CMV viremia was reduced in every case and eight patients cleared the infection, including one patient who had a prolonged history of CMV infection that was refractory to antiviral therapy. This novel approach to adoptive transfer has considerable potential for antigen-specific T cell therapy
