    Distribution, Abundance, and Feeding Habits of Juvenile Kingfish (Menticirrhus) Species Found in the North-Central Gulf of Mexico

    Southern Kingfish (Menticirrhus americanus), Gulf Kingfish (Menticirrhus littoralis), and Northern Kingfish (Menticirrhus saxatilis) were collected by beam plankton trawl and seine along shoreline habitats in 2005 and 2006. Specific habitats included barrier island (surf zones and grass beds) and mainland (marsh edge and sandy shorelines) areas. Five hundred sixty-seven kingfish were collected during this study, with over 85% of the specimens collected in 2006. Densities of both M. americanus and M. littoralis peaked during summer, whereas densities of M. saxatilis peaked in spring. All three kingfish species co-occurred within surf zone and sandy shoreline habitats, but M. americanus was the dominant kingfish along protected sandy shorelines, and M. littoralis was the dominant kingfish along open surf zones. Several M. littoralis, which are known to be surf zone species, were also collected from mainland sandy shoreline. Only M. americanus was collected from marsh edges, and all three species were absent from grass beds. Stomachs of all three kingfish species at sizes \u3c 15 mm standard length (SL) most often contained calanoid copepods. Larger M. americanus (16–60 mm SL) fed most frequently on mysids, larger M. littoralis (31–60 mm SL) fed most frequently on bivalves, and larger M. saxatilis (31–60 mm SL) fed most frequently on both mysids and amphipods. The diversity of prey items increased with size for all three Menticirrhus species.     Early Growth of Three Kingfish (Menticirrhus) Species Found in Coastal Waters of the Northern Gulf of Mexico

    Southern kingfish (Menticirrhus americanus), gulf kingfish (M. littoralis), and northern kingfish (M. saxatilis) are members of the drum family (Sciaenidae) that are widespread in coastal habitats of the western Atlantic, including in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM). Despite their economic and ecological importance, little is known about growth of young kingfish. Young kingfish were collected from four different Mississippi shoreline habitats in 2005 and 2006; two associated with barrier islands and two along the mainland. Barrier island habitats included surf zones on the south shore and grass beds on the north shore. Mainland habitats were located along marsh-edges and sandy shorelines. Kingfish growth comparisons were made using analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) on 194 aged fish (127 M. americanus, 54 M. littoralis, and 13 M. saxatilis). Growth rates for all three species were generally similar ranging from about 0.7mm/day at 4-6 mm standard length (SL) to 1.9mm/day at 55-60mm SL. In 2005, M. americanus from marsh-edges grew significantly faster than those from sandy shorelines.     Altered strength profile in Achilles tendinopathy: A systematic review and meta-analysis

    Background: Persistent strength deficits secondary to Achilles tendinopathy (AT) have been postulated to account for difficulty engaging in tendon-loading movements, such as running and jumping, and may contribute to the increased risk of recurrence. To date, little consensus exists on the presence of strength deficits in AT. Consequently, researchers are uncertain about the appropriate methods of assessment that may inform rehabilitation in clinical practice. Objective: To evaluate and synthesize the literature investigating plantar-flexion (PF) strength in individuals with AT. Study Selection: Two independent reviewers searched 9 electronic databases using an agreed-upon set of key words. Data Extraction: Data were extracted from studies comparing strength measures (maximal, reactive, and explosive strength) between individuals with AT and healthy control participants or between the injured and uninjured sides of people with AT. The Critical Appraisal Skills Programme Case-Control Study Checklist was used to assess the risk of bias for the included studies. Data Synthesis: A total of 19 studies were eligible. Pooled meta-analyses for isokinetic dynamometry demonstrated reductions in maximal strength (concentric PF peak torque [PT] slow [Hedges g ¼ 0.52, 44% deficit], concentric PF PT fast [Hedges g ¼ 0.61, 38% deficit], and eccentric PF PT slow [Hedges g ¼ 0.26, 18% deficit]). Reactive strength, particularly during hopping, was also reduced (Hedges g range ¼ 0.32–2.61, 16%–35% deficit). For explosive strength, reductions in the rate of force development (Hedges g range ¼ 0.31–1.73, 10%–21% deficit) were observed, whereas the findings for ground reaction force varied but were not consistently altered. Conclusions: Individuals with AT demonstrated strength deficits compared with the uninjured side or with asymptomatic control participants. Deficits were reported across the strength spectrum for maximal, reactive, and explosive strength. Clinicians and researchers may need to adapt their assessment of Achilles tendon function, which may ultimately help to optimize rehabilitation outcomes

    Countermovement rebound jump: a comparison of joint work and joint contribution to the countermovement and drop jump tests

    The kinetic analysis of joint work and joint contribution provides practitioners with information regarding movement characteristics and strategies of any jump test that is undertaken. This study aimed to compare joint works and contributions, and performance metrics in the countermovement jump (CMJ), drop jump (DJ), and countermovement rebound jump CMRJ. Thirty-three participants completed 18 jumps across two testing sessions. Jump height and strategy-based metrics (time to take-off [TTTO], countermovement depth [CM depth], and ground contact time [GCT]) were measured. Two-way analysis of variance assessed systematic bias between jump types and test sessions (α = 0.05). Reliability was evaluated via intraclass correlation coefficient [ICC] and coefficient of variation [CV]. Jump height and strategy-based metrics demonstrated good to excellent reliability (ICC = 0.82–0.98) with moderate CV (≤8.64%). Kinetic variables exhibited moderate to excellent reliability (ICC = 0.64–0.93) with poor to moderate CV (≤25.04%). Moreover, apart from TTTO (p ≤ 0.027, effect size [ES] = 0.49–0.62) that revealed significant differences between jump types, CM depth (p ≤ 0.304, ES = 0.27–0.32) and GCT (p ≤ 0.324, ES = 0.24) revealed nonsignificant trivial to small differences between three jumps in both sessions. Finally, the negative and positive hip and knee works, and positive ankle contribution measured in the CMRJ showed significant differences from the CMJ and DJ (p ≤ 0.048, g ≤ 0.71), with no significant difference observed in other kinetic variables between the three jump actions (p ≥ 0.086). Given the consistent joint works and joint contributions between jump types, the findings suggest that practitioners can utilize the CMRJ as a viable alternative to CMJ and DJ tests, and the CMRJ test offers valuable insights into movement characteristics and training suggestions.</p
