    A Complete Tank Test of a Model of a Flying-boat Hull - N.A.C.A. Model No.11-A

    Model No. 11-A was designed as an improvement over N.A.C.A. Model No. 11, a complete test of which is described in N.A.C.A. Technical Note No. 464. In contrast with the longitudinal upward curvature in the planing bottom forward of the main step on Model 11-A was made as flat as practicable. Otherwise, the two models have very nearly the same form. The results of towing tests made on Model 11-A in the N.A.C.A. tank over a wide range of speed, load on the water, and trim angle are presented, both as original test data and as non dimensional coefficients. A comparison is made with similar results from the test of Model No. 11. The practical significance of the improvement obtained is demonstrated by applying the data from the new form to the illustrative design problem use in the note on Model NO. 11

    Tank Tests of Auxiliary Vanes as a Substitute for Planing Area

    The results of towing tests made on two models at the request of the Bureau of Aeronautics, Navy Department, are presented. The first model represents the hull of the U.S. Navy PN-8 flying boat, in which the sponsors of the original hull are removed and auxiliary lifting vanes are fitted at the chines immediately forward of the main step. The tests showed that the altered form gave a large increase in hump resistance and a very undesirable spray formation through a large part of the speed range

    The models, apparatus, and instrumentation developed for investigations of the rough-water characteristics of seaplanes in the Langley tanks are described briefly. The results of several investigations to improve these characteristics are combined and summarized. The large effect of waves in take-off resistance is illustrated. The general relationship of the measured quantities of importance to wave length and height are also illustrated

    This note discusses the limitations of the conventional tank test of a seaplane model. The advantages of a complete test, giving the characteristics of the model at all speeds, loads, and trim angles in the useful range are pointed out. The data on N.A.C.A. Model No.11, obtained from a complete test, are presented and discussed. The results are analyzed to determine the best trim angle for each speed and load. The data for the best angles are reduced to non-dimensional form for ease of comparison and application. A practical problem using the characteristics of model no.11 is presented to show the method of calculating the take-off time and run of a seaplane from these data

    Making sense of EST sequences by CLOBBing them

    BACKGROUND: Expressed sequence tags (ESTs) are single pass reads from randomly selected cDNA clones. They provide a highly cost-effective method to access and identify expressed genes. However, they are often prone to sequencing errors and typically define incomplete transcripts. To increase the amount of information obtainable from ESTs and reduce sequencing errors, it is necessary to cluster ESTs into groups sharing significant sequence similarity. RESULTS: As part of our ongoing EST programs investigating 'orphan' genomes, we have developed a clustering algorithm, CLOBB (Cluster on the basis of BLAST similarity) to identify and cluster ESTs. CLOBB may be used incrementally, preserving original cluster designations. It tracks cluster-specific events such as merging, identifies 'superclusters' of related clusters and avoids the expansion of chimeric clusters. Based on the Perl scripting language, CLOBB is highly portable relying only on a local installation of NCBI's freely available BLAST executable and can be usefully applied to > 95 % of the current EST datasets. Analysis of the Danio rerio EST dataset demonstrates that CLOBB compares favourably with two less portable systems, UniGene and TIGR Gene Indices. CONCLUSIONS: CLOBB provides a highly portable EST clustering solution and is freely downloaded from: http://www.nematodes.org/CLOB
